Swapping an L8T Truck Engine into a 1972 Chevy Nova - Pt. 1 | Car Craft TV | MotorTrend

  • This time on the Car Craft video series, we venture into the world of direct injection and big-displacement modern engines that are readily available in the new and used marketplace. It used to be that one horsepower per cubic-inch was pretty impressive in a street car. Now your average pickup truck is sporting that kind of power without even trying hard.
    We're predicting Chevrolet's new L8T engine is going to be a very popular swap very soon. It displaces 6.6 liters, or 400 cubic inches, and is rated at 400 hp at 5,100 rpm and 464 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. The bore and stroke measure 4.060-inches and 3.860-inches respectively. The crankshaft is a forging, which is great for power-adder applications, and the connecting rods are also promising, with a forged powdered-metal construction.
    Follow along as we upgrade the drivetrain, suspension, and brakes in our 3 Part 1972 Nova Build Series.

    Can I just say that I love seeing the old school hot rodder attitude of in the garage paint or the use of a cookie sheet as a fan shroud!

    Somebody slowly built a halfway decent driver. You did nothing but criticize everything about it as you took it apart. Easy when money is no object. Very unimpressed with the personalities and attitudes of these guys. No comparison was to Motor Trend of the past.

      I don't think they were bagging him, but you're right when you say when money is no object. These shows give you the perspective that it's so easy assuming you have the money, knowledge & all the help. In saying that I do enjoy watching them.
      Cheers🙂

    He says it’s a 350 like it’s nothing. Before the ls happened it was all about 350’s and 383 strokers but I did come here to see an L8T swap because that’s what I wanna do to my Tahoe. So I’m trying to get as much visual info as possible. Thanks guys.

    How nice it would be to have limitless financing and the ability to just walk around at SEMA like walking around Walmart and just get whatever you want for a car you've never seen. This is not real world at all. There's the rest of us peons who barely have 2 pennies to rub together and our Walmart is a pull a part on a STRICT TIGHT budget. Let's see some reality shows on here for a change.

    "Designed for a different car" ...67-69 F body is literally the same from the cowl down as a 68-74 X-body. At the very least, have someone who knows more than the on air talent to check what they say before it goes live.

    I would have just put front disc brakes on it. I would have left the rear drums alone.

    • @dylancopenhaver1224
      @dylancopenhaver1224 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know drums are outdated and now considered dangerous right??

    • @frankc1430
      @frankc1430 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@dylancopenhaver1224 Rear drum brakes are not considered dangerous. The younger generation just doesn't understand how to work on them. Just like a carburetor. The rear brakes only do about 20% of the braking. Drum brakes work fine. I probably wouldn't use them for the front. Not that there's anything wrong with them on the front. With drum brakes you actually have more brake pad contact. Only negative thing I can see with drum brakes is that the self-adjuster star wheel can corrode and get stuck over time and lose adjustment. But that's an easy fix with a little anti-seize.

      I am doing rear discs on my Cutlass only because I put a 9 inch in it and it was cheaper to do discs than running drums in back. But again, there is nothing wrong with drums!
