Love your understated and dry sense of humour. Got me laughing quite often. Love your Sheppard how she checks in at the most appropriate moments possible when you're balancing a ton worth of motor or trying to move something that she figures she should help you with lol Great stuff. Can't wait to see this girl all fixed up and ready to dig :-)

Electric motor is for the auto throttle function. Some machines have contacts on the joystick handles that speed the engine to the setting of the hand throttle position when you grip it and return to idle when released. Nice function for certain situations but not always needed. Libherr used it in the 80/90’s. Handles had gold rings around them that were the contacts. Make absolutely sure when making the 4/6 wire hoses with flange fittings that they’re aligned correctly before you crimp the opposite fitting. They don’t twist much and too much rotational pressure will cause the flanges to crack and break where they are welded. Not to mention you will have a hell of a time getting them connected. If possible you can crimp one end on and put it in place on the machine with the other fitting in place but not crimped to get the best fit then mark the fitting to the hose to get the proper position. Depending on the brand and type of hose and fittings you use you may have to skive the hose and you may need different dies for the crimper. 5000 psi hoses are more challenging than 3000 psi hoses for a dyi. Of course I haven’t made any 4/6 wire hoses in over 20 years now so I don’t know if anything has changed since then. I used Weatherhead brand then. Not familiar with any other but Parker 2 wire for the last 22 years. On the final drive motor the small hose is probably the brake release or a 2 speed function and the top is probably the case drain. Consult the hydraulic print if you have one. You can probably get a digital manual on eBay for the machine if you don’t already have one. At this point you should strip it on down and give it a good cleaning and fresh paint where needed. You should be able to disassemble the valve stack and clean and reseal it with no issues. Valve in back is for the thumb most likely. I enjoy watching and looking forward to the next show.

It was obvious from the 'dozer series that Matt isn't one to shy away from big jobs...
However, I'm mildly concerned about his NEXT project once this excavator is back to pristine...
The +next_ is probably a nice 'simple' one such as building a track-loader from the ground up...
(And when I say 'ground up', I mean that Matt will begin by creating an iron-ore processing plant to produce the steel that he needs).
Impressive stuff sir... Keep up the good work!

I've worked on some filthy trucks and boats before, but that thing is nasty! I hope it is more clear in person than on video, but that is a maze of hoses and paths they have to run to avoid damage. Wishing you all the best and admire your work ethic. What you need is about 3 or 4 old coots like me to be standing around giving you advice. That would really make it better!

The little valve under the boom is the crossover relief valve block. The blue electric valve back by the pumps would be for the thumb, generically called a DO3 valve.

Hi Matt, WOW! What an undertaking you got you're self into. I thought I'd chime in here and tell you about cleaning filthy equipment and what I used back when I had a job. Let's talk Garbage Trucks and Filth, everything your dealing with and then some! Get some buckets and putty knife and start scraping the heavy stuff into buckets. It don't have to be perfect but the more you get off the less you'll wear. Next step, get some Commercial Oven Cleaner and a hand pump plastic garden sprayer and spray that mess down and watch it start to work. Get your hands on a steam pressure cleaner and have it ready to go as soon as your done spraying the Oven Cleaner. That machine will be as clean as factory new! Wear a full face shield to protect yourself!

I had NO idea what the complicated insides of an excavator were like. I've tackled some BIG projects in my life (building my own rustic homes, restoring 50' sailboat, etc. But...a project of the magnitude of what you are tackling....WOW!!

You have to be the most patient guy I’ve ever seen! Can’t wait until you get inside the shop and start breaking down parts videos!

I believe if you had to pull off the hydraulic motors at the finals they just bolt onto the back of the actual final drive and the track doesn't have to be pulled off. Thats how a 120 Komatsu we had was like

Lots and lots of pics help too. Especially when it comes to routing when everything starts going back together. It's really annoying to have to pull something back out because something else needed to go in first.

Good Luck, The only thing that comes to mind is Humpty-Dumpty ... At least you can look back at unedited video for help in reassembly as even with the color coded system the path the lines take to connect correctly and not rub or fray is very challenging. Ray Stormont

Great work, in awe of it. The lives of many zip ties could have been saved with a label printer :), I have just bought one after spending the last week digging in my USB cable box looking for the cable I need....

It looks more complicated than heart surgery. We all hope your patient lives & works again. As well as getting all the hydraulic hoses connected correctly, I guess the path of each hose & position of each hose is important too.

Matt, working alone at night in temperatures that make ice does not in my book qualify to be described as "a Fair Weather Mechanic" Since you are doing this for yourself, please consider that no employer would permit the current working conditions. We all do what must be done when required, do what you must as safely as possible, listen to that inner voice of "that could HURT ME" as you consider the next task. And just cause you got away with it before is no assurance of getting away again. Work smarter not harder. Good stuff Matt, keep 'em coming.
