      He Is Hephaestion let me preface what I’m going to say with this, my favorite “top 3” movies of 2019 were Ford v Ferrari, Joker, and Uncut Gems.
      So I have no horse in this1917 or Parasite argument.
      But I think the direction/story of Parasite was more artistically pleasing than 1917. When people were asked about 1917 usually the first thing they talk about is the “long shot” technicality of it.
      Which it won the cinematography award for.
      I know film is subjective, but I can definitely see why many people voted for Parasite over 1917 for best picture.
      Overall Parasite was better.

  • @bear9868
    @bear9868 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Disagree on Parasite. It is a great film from an excellent director. Korean cinema can be super creative without following the normal western storytelling tropes.

      The Little Women criticism I don't understand. Why are people easy to judge that film? I can understand movies with a woke premise like Moonlight, Shape of Water or The Danish Girl; but what's up with the Little Women 'hate?' Isn't that story supposed to be a classic like Anne of Green Gables, Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre or Anna Karenina?

They didn't even know it was a book... they honest to God think the world just started spinning in the last few years. "Democratic socialism" is a fraudulent term to cover up the fact that socialism is nonviable.

    • @Jacob-yd7gd
      @Jacob-yd7gd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Donald O'Ronald The fact that Democratic Socialism is even a term in our general vernacular is a testament to how bad of a politician that Bernie Sanders is. Because he’s not a democratic socialist, and real democratic socialists are mad at him for that reason. Bernie’s policy platform is that of social democracy, and there is a massive difference between those ideologies. People prop Sanders up as a genius but that’s an enormous mistake to make. He’s not the evil communist everyone makes him out to be, he’s an idiot far left capitalist.
      The sad thing is that I would support a candidate with a more moderate form of his philosophy, but he’s both a bit too radical for me, and makes mistakes that are too obvious to look past.

    • @flintfredstone228
      @flintfredstone228 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jacob-yd7gd Definitely not a capitalist, as least doesn't show his support for it. It is obvious that Bernie's pulling for socialism, but trying to look as moderate as possible. Bernie's lifelong hero is Eugene V. Debs, a socialist who ran for president multiple times in the early 1900's. He has praised bread lines and has stated that the Bay of Pigs invasion to stop Cuba from becoming communist made him sick. In 2016 he responded to every question with the same answer of hating the one-percent.
      Democratic socialism is an outright lie. Socialists claim that socialism is inherently democratic, but if it was, why would they need to place democratic in front of it? They also fail to realize that adding a second word doesn't change the meaning of first word.
      You are correct that social democracy is really what Bernie is advocating when boiled down, and you are correct that a social democracy is not the equivalent of democratic socialism, which he describes himself as. Until recently, I didn't know that they were different, but indeed, a social democracy is basically a welfare state, and can be applied to the Nordic countries.

    I dunno what Americans are told about Canadian healthcare, but on top of lottery, alcohol, gambling, and income taxes, I still have to pay $300 a month over and above the supplemental insurance my employer buys for me (worth about $500 a month). So my "free" Canadian healthcare still costs my little family of 4 $800 a month so I can sit for 4hrs in triage if I go to a hospital or wait 3wks to see my assigned GP... still costs out of pocket $50 to go to the dentist once every nine months (otherwise it's the full $225) and not all medicines or therapies are covered (or have a $300 per year hard cap on coverage). Nothing damn free about it...

    The one thing I will say about Parasite is that it is impressive that despite that fact that it is made outside of the Hollywood film bubble, and isn't even in English, it did manage to get international attention. I watched it on the plane from Thailand to New Zealand after having it recommended to me by different people from around the world. It is a given, that 1917, Joker, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are going to receive accolades. But Hollywood has all the money, all the A-List actors, and dominates cinemas across the globe. A film that manages to reach an international audience without all that deserves at least a little recognition. I think the Academy Awards between being an American entertainment award ceremony, and being an international one. An actual international award ceremony would be amazing, and would give stories from around the world the recognition they deserve with less of the drama.

It’s not every day a foreign language movie connects with a big chunk of casual American theatre goers.

    I do NOT want colleges to be declared tuition free. What I want is for the government to stop guaranteeing student loans, preventing students from discharging student debt when declaring bankruptcy, giving federal funding to these administratively bloated institutions, and offering grants to huge numbers of students who can't afford college.
    If the government stopped doing all those things, which heavily distort the market, then colleges could no longer make money off of students that can't afford to go there, they could only make money off of students that *can* afford to go there. As a result, simple supply and demand would force the price of college to plummet through the floor. People forget, college in the U.S. used to be *really* affordable, back in the late 80s. It used to be totally possible to pay your college tuition by working a job flipping burgers. The question you have to ask is, what changed? If it was working before, why don't we go back to what was working, instead of offering some radical socialist solution?
    An associate of mine made the comment that when he first attended Berkeley, the price of tuition was $800 a semester. If you adjust that for inflation, that's like $1600 in today's money. That means that it would cost you $3,200 a year to attend today if conditions were the same as back then. The *total* cost of getting an undergraduate degree at Berkeley would be about $12,800 spread out over 4 years today, by that reckoning. So don't let a bunch of socialists say that the solution is what amounts to government take-over of higher education.
