Yes, they normally use Nicker poster colors in painting their Ghibli films. But when Studio Ghibli goes out to research about areas in Japan they will use as inspiration for their films, Hayao Miyazaki uses watercolors. They would paint the location plein air. He used the tools in this set with some slight variations (like certain colors that used to be in this set have been discontinued and were replaced with similar colors.)
Thanks for the video ❤❤❤ and actually showing a painting, that is the real way to see how watercolors perform, not only swatching them as a lot of videos do.
Thank you for reviewing the palette and sharing our experience. I really appreciated the part where you made suggestions for lightfastedness and used the pigments' designations!
Don’t judge, but I had to Google what a Ghibli was. Fun new world to explore. Thanks for sharing your art and insight. The pencil shaving was a nice highlight.
I wish I had watched this sooner! Such a gorgeous set of materials, and Ghibli is a world I would take a running leap into! ✨ You made a lovely piece. There, when you began blending the light and dark tones, it started to come to life.
The paint set seems really amazing but I couldn't tear my eyes away from your bookshelf! I absolutely adore the PJO series and I'm currently reading The Sun And The Star!
Thanks for providing the list of colours. Holbein is relatively cheap in Australia so I own quite a few. But this has me curious what these colours would be like in gouache which holbein also make and are relatively cheap in Australia too. Hmmm
Although we do different styles of art I greatly appreciate what you've done here. I've had a curiosity about the Holbein watercolors but I very much love the way that some of the American watercolors behave. I don't know what the debate is about prussian blue, I just know that I love prussian blue as well as viridian and alizarin crimson. Although I'm very aware that alizarin crimson is fugitive there are permanent versions although I see a difference in the color.
i had no idea there was a Miyazaki paint set, thank you so much for sharing this! your painting is wonderful, and this video was very relaxing and inspiring to watch (:
That pencil shaving tho! Incredibly good quality sharpener and pencil wood to make that! And yes, I know, I know, out of everything in the video to have stuck out at me, it just HAD to be the pencil shaving. I know it's weird.🤣🤣
The cat returns used to be my favorite, but now i think its either totoro or the secret world of errietty, because my favorite thing about ghibli is how they illustrate nature and plants.
I watched a documentary about Miyazaki and he showed his watercolor palette. It was the Holbein 26 well aluminum palette, though he clearly said it was 24 colors which confused me. They sell cheap knockoffs (and the crazily priced originals) on Amazon. I use and love them. The 26 well comes in two sizes and the larger one (the dupe of Miyazaki's) is like the perfect studio palette IMO. I see you're not looking to buy, but prior to the opening of the Ghibli museum that set you have was not available and I spent a long time researching to recreate his palette. So, I had to take the opportunity to share. Funny little thing he said that starting with that palette filled was "enough for one movie" . Lol
@@beckbabej wow! Thanks for all the info, thats really cool. I've been meaning to watch some of those documentaries.... somehow i never get around to it
@@madden.r.grimes thank you for the information. I thought that they were only selling it years ago. I will try to find a way to get one shipped to me (Canada).
Love how warm toned this palette is. Instantly great for earthy landscapes and still life’s with warm interior lighting.
It has to be said that the background paintings of Ghibli movies aren't made with watercolors, but with postercolors (more like gouache).

@@ethonica that's correct! But the reference picture is made with postercolors
yes, i do address this in the video
@@madden.r.grimes apologies, I missed that part
@@pinkcloud3126 no worries
I love your swatching template. Such a good idea, and so much better than the way I've been ruling them up.
Its so helpful for comparing colors and deciding on a palette
Sweetheart, there's nothing "basic" about finding Miyazaki's work inspiring. He's a treasure of Japan for a reason.

Holbein are my favorite artist-grade watercolors.

I love Holbein everything. I order from Allegro Japan. Includes shipping to US.

I love Holbein, lovely palette set up and painting.
Really pleasant video. I like how your painting turned out. Thank you

The set look so wonderful! The painting you did also looked wonerful! I have a few Holbien gouaches I'll have to look into them more!
Thank you for your thoughts on the set!
Thanks for sharing your art and info on Ghibli . Your painting is lovely😍
Thank you very much!

I really hope to see more of your work! I adore Prussian Blue myself. My favorite version of it comes from Van Gogh!
I might just have to check that out, i am also a Prussian blue mega-fan
Decided to comment bc I'm feeling saucy. 😄 very nice painting and super helpful overview!
I'm glad it was helpful!
Love this video! So calm and relaxing. Thank you for making this and sharing it

I was so impressed by that unbroken pencil shaving, i totally get it
that scene is from Spirted Away... is the entrance to the train station =)
Thank you!
So lucky I've wanted that so bad, great art, subscribed 😊
I like your artwork
Idk how I found you but glad I did! Love your style of video . Super enjoyable and going to try to binge your videos! Thanks and have a great day
Glad you like them!
What a lovely video, you definitely earned a subscriber 🤍
Very enjoyable. Thank you :)
interesting color choices
Thanks for sharing. 😊
I sharply inhaled when the cover of that book said "Homo" 😂
i laughed too, it just means i was meant to have it
Ive loved ghibli since blockbuster was a thing😂
freaking awesome work
Thanks!
i love that plastic palette! it looks slim and neat what are the dimensions?
Closed its approximately 4×9 and less than an inch thick, its very sleek
thank you for this
Does anyone know if they still sell this in the museum? Planning to go to Japan within the next 3 months
Yes they do! And it's the Ghibli Museum located in Tokyo, not the new Ghibli Park.
Is your cat just crunching away casually in the background? :D
that's probably my boyfriend typing, but this is hilarious, i'm gonna tell him about this comment
I love Holbein nearly as much as Ghibli. Do you have a favourite Ghibli?
The cat returns used to be my favorite, but now i think its either totoro or the secret world of errietty, because my favorite thing about ghibli is how they illustrate nature and plants.
Weird it gives you 24 colors and a palette with only 18 wells... I'd just buy one with 24 slots off Amazon. 😅
I believe this is the palette that Miyazaki was using at the time this set was designed. As for buying it on Amazon, wast not want not, it works fine
@@madden.r.grimes That's fair, no disrespect to Miyazaki. 🙏

I am so jealous right now. I have been looking for it for a long time now.
Do you know where the person bought it?
He bought it at the ghibli museum in Japan
