Big Topwater, Big Snook When I was about your age, Ira Van Loh ran the bait stand and short order grill on the beach at the first Bob Hall Pier. All that was destroyed in Carla in '61. Ira was an old salty former commercial fisherman that came to the Island in the 1930's. I used to try to get tips from him on fishing and after a quite a few sessions he told me this. He and Luis Rawalt used to fish in Packery Pass for big snook and redfish.. They used 22 ft long Calcutta poles and home made top water lures they carved from broom handles. They made two kind. One was like the Zara Spook style and the other was a King Vamp pattern which is similar but had two indentations scooped out from the nose to behind the eyes. Rawalt still holds the Texas record at 57 lbs. It was not recognized as a world record because the IGFA did not allow treble hooks in those days. Where did he catch that monster? Packery Pass.
You're consistently the most creative fisherman on TH-cam. I find your commentary witty and your videos are the most rewarding to watch! (Yes even more so than Jon B.) I really like to bass fish, but I really LOVE to fish for trout and Reds like yourself and you are one of the few consistent anglers on TH-cam that highlight how special these fish are! Not as effective in deeper water in the winder due to the fact that the water on the top is colder than the water on top and they don’t want to come up for it
do you live near kemah ? i've been searching for new spots all around my area to kayak fish & i finally found a good spot but the weather ended up getting bad. i would love to kayak fish with you sometime !! (none of my friends like to fish)
