    We all have been the history of all mankind for centuries .
    Edward Said", RIP 🙏 ❤
    The voices are echoes that are screaming discent and decency we honor.
    With the deepest respect and admiration for all those who walk the footsteps of truths against powers of greed.

    One must enqiure profoundly and deeply and ask,
    "Who are we?"
    A beautiful tribute.

    I love this conversation so much. It makes me feel safer and more relaxed just being in the world, knowing these two people are also in the world and several steps ahead of me with the big picture, and more secure in that knowledge (it seems to me, at least). I come back to this and watch it over and over like some folks watch re-runs of Seinfeld. I love their passion and humor and kindness and the level at which they care, in addition to the brilliance and commitment to thought and reason. Where’s Kramer, by the way? ;-}

      "..several steps ahead of me with the big picture", lol.
      This is the big picture:-
      First two sentences of Edward Bernays' Propaganda (1928)
      "THE conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country."

    10 years later, Palestine culture and history are very much alive & admired. Colonizers have lost their souls, and they will never retrieve it back.
    Columbia uni should continue honoring Edward Said and not be bullied by Z's

    This is absolutely brilliant.Lila Abu-Lughod's introduction was terrific and Judith Butler and Cornel West do a fantastic job in honouring Said and rightfully not deifying him, as Said was always open to criticism. I have seen this talk 3 times now and all I can is that hopefully I will be able to attend both of their lecture's in person one day.

    Turner (2006) "The notion of 'public intellectual' has a characteristically romantic flavour. It means an intellectual who struggles against overwhelming odds to deliver an overwhelmingly important social analysis that is received by an audience that requires a message that will give expression to their lives. Public intellectuals tend to be associated with political causes, especially in relation to colonial struggles. The public intellectual is an alienated outside who struggles heroically against oppression and injustice. (pg. 172)

    This was fantastic. Does anyone have any reading suggestions specifically on the point of when Judith Butler discusses all of the traditions and heritages we are born into. I'm trying to understand that question myself. r

    • @ghiaspir3357
      @ghiaspir3357 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Judith Butler has been influenced quite strongly by Foucault. Traditions, history, language and heritages that she talks about come from an idea that humans are created/formed through power structures that are in many ways not entirely visible in the way they work. The two books that I can mention when she says that "we are formed in history, we are formed in language" are Foucault's 'The Archaeology of Knowledge' and 'History of Sexuality'. Examples of Traditions and heritages are somewhat addressed but they mostly cover the theory of how a 'human' is 'created'.
      P.S If this is what you were looking for I would recommend Nikolas Rose's 'Governing the Soul: The Shaping of the private Self' as well.

      Control over ones own destiny is not an oxymoron. That’s what people mean when they say self rule. What your pointing out is a semantic issue.

    • @gustavttt4148
      @gustavttt4148 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      well, the fundamental problem with political thought is why, why people desire their repression as if it were their liberty? many thinkers have approached this problem, like La Boétie, Spinoza, Wilhelm Reich, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, just to name a few. only if you have surpassed your human bondage you are capable of ruling yourself. this has nothing to do with utopia, but with the search for a better and more empathetic world.

    get to the point about the man and his true discussion...
    in this discussion you diffuse the mans historical significance with your own philisophical or scholastic discussion...in the mans live discussion, he rarely ascends to these greater levels and thus lesser known discriptives...

    29:00. Codifying group oppression, that is to say attempting the types of fundamentalist categories such as a person of color depend upon oversimplifyingand denying oppressor status to anyone who is determined to be oppressed, put another way, these discourses seem to be intent on creating some type of authoritarian and statist bureaucracy incapable of locating the mythical pure oppressor... Put another way, The proletariat become a mythical non-existent people who serve as a bullseye for the powerful to justify an extreme power grab, it's a decoy
