I have ALWAYS wanted to build a full size Optimus Prime. But how big is he REALLY? This time I worked on figuring that out, as well as making a comfortable helmet to wear trick-or-treating with my kids this year!

The in use montage at the end was the best.
I've done tons of papercraft over the years and for some reason, I never considered scaling up and wearing the stuff. Awesome idea, Bob.
Bob, the ending montage of you wearing the head so good! It was fun and funny and the end product looked fantastic! Great video.
I 100% want an Optimus Prime project video. 😂 Y’all are so funny, you’d nail that just like this one. Great video!
Bob, this is insanely dope!
This is definitely in top 5 things you've put together in my book.
Thanks!
AMAZING! I want to make one so bad now! I was thinking about window screen mesh as an option for the eye holes, but that needlework mesh looks perfect. Also that outro with you doing your everyday tasks wearing that helmet made me laugh so hard! Great work! Enjoyed this one a lot!
I love this build, and would definitely like to see more props and costume builds. Since you have an R2, maybe you could do an X-Wing pilot, or you could expand on the Transformers theme and make a full EVA foam build,
This was awesome! I would love to see another video where you wore that through out the build
Bob's quest to actually become Optimus Prime continues. This turned out super cool! Love Anthony's Transformer transitions too. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! Those graphics are all Forby 👍🏻
My dude, please do a whole suit build. Bring Optimus Prime to life!
LOVE the welding helmet headband solution for mascot heads. Definitely going to file that one away for later use down the road
Haha, the scenes at the end wearing the helmet were so great 😂
Seeing you in the helmet was fantastic! I'd love to see a whole video with you in it!
Very cool! Great job "kudos" on winging it. Loved the outcome. That would be awesome to see you do a project using the bobble head.
Those outro shots wearing the helmet were hilarious.
This video is LITERALLY THE BEST.
Thanks man!
The glowing eyes bring that piece together beautifully.
The montage at the end...*chef's kiss*. Hilarious. That looks awesome - the size vs your body is perfect.
Literally said out loud “that’s so f*****g cool”. So awesome!!
Please wear this around doing normal things like grocery shopping, going to the movies, out to eat, football games, whatever. I would totally watch that video!!
I built my son an entire Optimus Prime transforming costume! There are many videos online, and I bet you could make it you-sized without much trouble. It was a ton of fun and he loves it!
I would LOVE to see you do an entire project video in that thing. it looks so awesome !! the eyes are really cool and even just seeing them in the shadow of the lip of the top of the helmet showed how well they glow. fantastic !!
That B roll at the end is absolutely amazing.
This was FANTASTIC! Prime is the MAN. loved the Soundwave you had on your table, too!
I never knew I needed a video of Bob wearing an Optimus Prime bobble head. What an outrageously silly appearance wearing this and holding the gun. Incredible.
This needs a series. Loved the pepakura method. Amazing for a first attempt.
The "Optimus in every day life" montage was fantastic
Considering all of the changes, or perhaps the changes not withstanding at ILTMS as of late, somehow or another this has the vibe of one of your videos from way back. The lightsaber video from 6 years ago, when your face lights up when you turn on the LEDs for the first time…this video reminds me of your energy from that moment. I’ve always remembered that moment as one of genuine joy from creation. That’s why I watch. ☮️
❤❤❤
I really appreciate that. Thank you.
Lol love all the activities at the end wearing the helmet! And yes! Want to see a project video wearing it the whole time!
Haha thanks! Maybe I'm going to regret suggesting that.
That B roll was hilarious, well done
Thanks!
Mowing the lawn, playing with the family. That was just awesome.
Heck Yeah! Pepakura for the win!!! Thats how I got my start making youtube content 10+ years ago on my old account
OMG this is so fun ! The disproportionnate nature of it is so funny, and even funnier to see you doing everyday stuff very comfortably
Great project, Bob...and the B roll is pure gold.
This project was pretty dang cool but none of it adequately prepared me for seeing you wear it. That compilation at the end actually had me laughing out loud, cackling even!
I love all of the information and build ideas. There are so many concepts and material recommendations that I can use for many other projects. Thank you.
Great project! Turned out fantastic.
My brain went to cover everything with some kind of tape and putting a football helmet inside.
Definitely want to see you wear that helmet all the time!
Great job Bob. This is super cool. So many possibilities to explore with this concept.
Yes wear it for a whole project! And eventually build a full-scale body that you can wear and walk in on stilts.
Loved the montage of you living your best Optimus life.
I am moving this to the top of my to do list... I can't wait until the full body how to video comes out
It really is a perfect Bobble Head ratio to human size. Seeing you wearing it confirmed it for me!
I'm sorry I missed this video when it first came out. You could have totally built this using EVA foam and had no corrugation or water dampness issues.
I love the giant head idea. Reminds me of cheat codes in old video games. It looks so fun.
This was really cool. I haven't done anything like this, but my first thought was to use painters tape to seal up those gaps in the corrugation before you seal it. After you mentioning the issue with moisture from the mod podge you could actually wrap the entire thing in painter's tape, then mod podge it to seal it.
I have to say that, having watched you for many many years, this project has to be my absolute favorite (and I'm not even a fan of Transformers). Congratulations on the brilliant result!!!
Thanks Fred, I really appreciate that!
What Vader from Space Balls!!! Those light panels as the eye's were pretty cool, especially with the black mesh backing and the shadow line of the brow line! very nice!
Love the montage of wearing the helmet around!!!
In hindsight foam might have been the better choice over cardboard. It is just as light, doesn't have the corrugated edges to hide, and a ton of cosplayers have already figured out most of the tricks and traps of using it, so there is a wealth of advice out there to guide. Either way, it looks fantastic, and now I want to do a battle damaged version! Kind of like a decepticon trophy mount!
I didn’t expect it to be as awesome as it turned out, so great! We need a follow up after Halloween on reactions to you wearing it out and about.
This was awesome and the end having Optimus Prime doing daily tasks was hilarious!!! 😂 I think you need to do a pepakura C3-PO next so you can buddy up with your R2-D2!!! Keep up the great work!!! ❤
O my ... the final result, whilst wearing it... is one of the funniest things ive ever seen. I didn't think i could still laugh that hard. That hit me right in the funny-bone apparently.
The sequence at the end had me and my boys cracking up! We loved this one Bob!
Its like having all these skills building things gives you a big head.
🥁 🥁 💥
Really cool project, and it was great to see how it came together through the video :)
Definitely need to wear this more!! I love all the short clips of you doing stuff in it! It made me laugh!
Bob. If you hired people to make and sell this as a complete helmet, you probably may make a good amount of money, I reckon. its fantastic and a conversation starter, for sure. I would never be able to build and paint this.
That montage at the end was incredible! 😂
I love the Makobot logo! Very good job and funny idea!
That... Was.... Awesome!!!!! There's just something so hilarious about watching someone do anything in a comically large head!!!!! Makes me think of the movie "Frank" I agree with you on the foam board....
The glamour shots of you wearing the helmet are hysterical! Fantastic video, Bob
Awesome! We need a complete helmet video
I used Pepakur/papercraft when I made my first Ironman suit out of floor foam mats. I still build costumes out of foam as well as 3d printing. To scale this I would have done this except used foam. But for card board, Resin is your best option, car fiber glass and resin.
So inspiring! Thanks for your Instagram story that reminded me to come checkout this video! I had always been told to never ever use corrugated cardboard on the laser, so it's good to know that it's possible when done carefully! (you always have to be super cautious of course). This is such a cool way to make a costume!
Love this! As someone who is not yet a proficient woodworker, I really enjoyed the simple and inexpensive materials that you used to create this. And it's always fun to see the happy accidents along the way. I can see a ton of potential for using this cardboard method to create really large objects. Thanks for sharing!!
First off, definitely want to see a full video with you in the helmet. That thing is awesome!
Secondly, I'd love to see you collab with Punished Props Academy. They do lots of affordable prop work / cosplay stuff and could probably share a few tricks.
I LOVE Bill and Britt! I was actually texting Bill pics of this along the way! We’ve done a couple so things with them in the past. Bill did a life cast of my head years back 👍🏻
So so so so so awesome. Love this build man. Very good job. As a big transformers fan me an the little one watched this and absolutely enjoyed it. Thanks so much for sharing.
I love the helmet!
I would love to see a project video of you wearing it. If you can do so safely, that is!
The possibilities are endless with Transfomers, Voltron, Robotech, and many other cartoon and anime robots using this technique.
That is ridiculously cool! Thanks Bob!
This is awesome! That B-Roll is just mint!
That's is sick!! You so need to build the rest of Optimus in full size now!!! Great job 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Pepakura is basically the name for a software that can unfold appropriate 3D-models into 2D. It creates the separations and even the tabs. But its not an alternative name for papercraft.
Haha, this is great!
Totally getting Lord Helmet vibes :)
Long live G1 Transformers! Awesome build, you could also use some of the glossy printed packaging cardboard as it is pre-sealed and remove the top layer for any of the tabs that need to be glued together.
Doooooode! That is one of the coolest buildings ever!
Modpodge is watered down white glue (PVA), so I was a bit shocked that it was tried at all. Fortunately the lacquer worked well and it turned out great.
That is looking awesome! It's a shame not many people watching this.
This was hilarious to watch you do stuff while wearing it
Such a fun build! It turned out great buddy.
Bob has done it again! So cool!
That turned out great Bob! So much fun!
Thanks!
Awesome, and BTW it was really nice running into you the other day at the store, you were nice for having a fat old guy come up to you out of no where LOL....
So that was the best basketball I’ve ever seen you play 😂 so maybe the helmet is the key to your game 😂😂😂 great project brother!
This turned out way better than I would have imagined. I have to make something like this to live out the Big head cheat code in old video games. You never disappoint but this is on another level. Great job!
0:57 lmao! that was funny 2:19 WOW that template is AWESOME! 5:00 THAT looks absolutely amazing. WOW 14:45 it look absolutely INCREADIBLE! As a life long transformer fan (of the animated movie, not the latest hollywood movies from michael bay) It looks absotelu increadible! well done! LOVE IT.
Edit: I forgot to say that I love the oldschool transformer transition. it was awesome.
Good job, I've made a bunch of pepakura stuff in the past. I made a prime head years ago, but I did a original design inspired by the cybertronian designs. That was fun
This is great. Love the end of life as Optimus lol
Great video Bob!
Super cool, awesome job man!
Great job; love it!
the end is soooooo hilarious!!!! love it!
That blue is spot on
Awesome Bob really like this video, keep doing more! is dope!!!
This is so awesome!
If I did not see you make it out of cardboard I would have never been the wiser.
I would love to see you wear that helmet during other projects, e.g. making Optimus Prime's hands as gloves or something.
Heard about this project in your podcast with Jimmy and David, and tried to visualise it, but man: you really pulled this one off! This helmet is awesome!!! Now only thing left to do is pray to the weather gods that it doesn't rain on Halloween 😄
This is awesome! I love how it turned out. I might have to try it out.
Well, that's just PRIME.
Still fondly remember both the blaster and the Soundwave boombox (the latter being my favorite project you've ever done). Maybe Soundwave's head next year?
Maybe 🤔
That looks GLORIOUS!
Now I want one myself, but that really is not a thing one can store just anywhere. 😅
do a project video with it on the whole time, please. And great video!
