“They burglarized our home for drug money. It was going from bad to worse. And all of his mental health workers said there’s nothing that we can do. He’s his own person.” - Mindy
“Society does recognize schizophrenia or any of its versions as vulnerable.” - Mindy
“Well-meaning ideas - such as the notion that they must first “hit rock bottom” or volunteer for treatment - can leave those too ill to seek help literally out in the cold.
Psychiatrist Darold Treffert wrote of this danger in 1973, explaining that failing to engage such individuals risked allowing them to “die with their rights on.” Authorities prized the autonomy rights of patients above all other priorities.” - www.treatmentadvocacycenter.o...

I appreciate your discussions and the information you all are sharing so freely. There are so many moms out here struggling with the stigma of having SMI in the family. The more we know, the more we can do to help our kids. I would love to hear how any or all of you have handled the relationships with your other children and relationships between the afflicted child and their siblings. This is perhaps one of the hardest factors in our family and it breaks my heart that my kids are not close like they were as children.

Oh my gosh, ur in Connecticut, I'm a Connecticut mother and I've just filed for a conservatorship as well. Is there a way I can send you through email some information or contact you somehow to pick ur brain on if you think I don't have enough to gain a conservatorship. I'm so scared and I'm shocked that we are in the same state but I completely understand if you prefer not to, I'm sure many reach out to you.

Hi Sophie . I’m not really an expert but I can tell you what I know . The first thing I can tell you is start keeping track of everything ! Incidents, jobs gained and lost, medications, hospital stays . You have to prove grave disability

@@SZ3MomsTrenches yes, I heard you use that word a few times, grave disability. I've been doing some research into it. Also, please know that I'm not attempting to put you on the spot with specific legal questions regarding my son, im more so asking you about the legalities in Connecticut because as you know every state is very different when it comes to conservatorships. I've been reading case law here in Connecticut as well as the statues. I'm just so shocked that I was lucky enough to hear that you're from Connecticut and that our son's suffer from the same disability. This whole situation is heartbreaking.
