Great video, thank you. I have the Cobalt 8x and just got the Argon 8m. Have them Midi together and exploring the possibilities. Would you mind sharing what MPE means?
As a Cobalt 8x owner I just want to jump in and emphasize something for anyone out there synth-shopping, especially for your FIRST synth. It's worth noting that while Jeremy's showing off the module, the 61 key version is the most affordable keyboard synth on the market with a 61 key Fatar keybed, by far. Most synths on the market with the same or similar keybed are twice the price or more. It's such a great place for you to start, if you want other modules down the road you already have an absolutely wonderful master keyboard to play on.
So I just bought a Cobalt and its awesome. But my comment is really about how amazing this vid is. Not only does it showcase the synth, shows you how to make a track with it. Jeremy you are a genius. Looove everything you do.
We bought one of these recently. Cobalt 8M. Super impressed with the preset sounds and overall capabilities! Incredible stuff!! We're trying to determine whether it's multi-timbral capable (or not). Great job on that awesome song AND this video! You fully demonstrated how to make this synth absolutely FLY! Wowzers!
i've seen the "Fundamentals of Rhythm for Electronic Music" video you've done (which is astounding by the way), few days pass, and i am researching cobalt, and i stumble across you again. i exclaimed out of excitement "NO WAY HE'S DONE A VIDEO ABOUT THE COBALT...!" this is so exciting to me. I'm hyped. i think you've sold me on this one. your final track has amazing soundscapes that drive my mind wild. the algorithms on this thing allow for some insane synthesis--- as i'm torn between getting a deepmind 6 (or 12) vs a cobalt, i think this would be a better and more elementary fit for me for the time being. i will dive deeper into grabbing one of these for my 2nd synthesizer; at the very least, a modulation machine. i'm excited and eager to try it out myself. thank you for making this amazing video, and i hope you keep it up. subbed to you now bro :)
let me add that you are one of the reasons that i started making music. also loved to see you start doing eurorack stuff. know you started a while ago but better late than never.
I can't tell you how happy I am when I get to take care of the most important thing on any new equipment. I actually bought a 10-year old bass earlier this year that still had that over the truss rod cover. Twas a happy discovery.
You made me fall in love with the hypnotic and lush Vector Synth, and gush over the edgy gnarly side Hydrasynth. I have the Skulpt and Craft 2, and wanted to like this synth but the sound demos didn't quite do it for me. And even other reviews left me feeling flat. On seeing this video, I thought 'Come on Jeremy, show me I am wrong to have dismissed this' and you did. You seems to pull so many differing sounds out f these boxes that others miss.
I have a synth stand with a couple of VA synths and they are all blue in colour. This would look great at the very top. Yamaha AN1x, Korg MS2000 and Modal Cobalt 8. I've been looking at the Cobalt for sometime. Beautiful sound and great build.
This is such a deep, yet understandable synth. It's one of the only affordable modern hardware polys that strikes a balance which speaks to me. Thanks for always having an easily accessible pace to learn about equipment. You're the man, Jeremy.
I didn't like this or the Argon at first. The Cobalt grew on me and bought one. I grew to really love it and the sound design is actually fun to do on it. Then I got an Argon too. I think between the two the Cobalt is a better synth IMO if you had to choose. But I enjoy them both a lot.
love that they put the screen on the bottom, it's something that is really annoying on a lot of synths where the display is so far away from you when you are sitting behind the keyboard
As an guitarist this is my first synth. Awesome for home studio and live setup (if you get the keyed version) i hated to use vst’s to get synth sounds it just felt uninspiring. It was a best decision to go hardware w/Cobalt8x sound amazing with lush reverb and delay. I already recorded a synthwave track with it.😃 ”Elossa - Set Free”
This is a cracking little synth, I love mine. You can get a huge variety of different sounds out of it, it's incredibly easy to quickly make a sound that sounds great, there's loads of modulation options and the modulation shortcuts are almost too esy, the fact that it's all encoders is really helpful and the new oscillators that have just come out in the latest firmware are awesome too. You can't go wrong. I don't use it but I'm not sure if this demo mentions the fact it works with mpe too, the mpe demo's modal have done are very impressive. I have the Argon8M too, I reckon these synths are pretty special, just like this demo, love your work!
@@RedMeansRecording I can't say if I'm a fan or not, I only sequence my cobalt with my deluge. I just reckon it's a nice extra feature if that's what you want.
Great synth, and a great demo, but you’ve pushed it a couple of places down my wishlist- there’s rather more menu diving than I’d be wholly comfortable with. And I’ve got a couple of Skulpts, so I can always polychain those. Thanks Jeremy!
The one feature I really want to see come to the Cobalt range (and I assume the Argons are the same) is a switchable setting to make the oscillators free running, or at least some (controllable?) element of init phase randomisation to achieve that end. Along the lines of the Phase Init parameter on the Virus. That's definitely less applicable for some algorithms (e.g. FM stuff), and it certainly isn't always 'better' to have free running oscillators in all contexts (e.g. bass), but I've found myself making patches that could really do without the 'bzzow' kinda phasing artefact that you get with detuned oscillators all resetting to phase 0 on note on. That's the one thing that for me lets it down - but I am fussy; otherwise it's a fantastic kinda plucky-pad machine in particular as you demonstrated well here.
According to the manual, the Drift function alters "the amount of slop or random detuning of each oscillators phase and tune". I don't have the Cobalt, can you confirm if this is the case? Does it change the phase?
Interesting little device, this! I could see it living comfortably among Eurorack as a MIDI pad workhorse. And incidentally, you just made the perfect music for an anime promo ^__^
oh wow ive owned my cobalt nearly a year and didnt even notice the randomize faeature..... - face palm- i still have some free spots to design some sounds, definitely going to try this feature.
Yeah, I was hoping for less, but it's not too bad in the "grand scheme" of things. I love my Skulpt and Craftsynth from Modal, and for around 400€ I would have jumped on the Cobalt, no second guessing. But it's no surprise as Modal's Argon8M is priced the same. For 550€ though, I think I'd rather get a couple of 250-300€ expanders (Neutron's been on my list). Still much more affordable than Hydrasynth, which Cobalt just joined in my "dream synth list" (along with Argon8M) :)
Question for you and your community? 1- Do you think the Cobalt would be a good modern equivalent to the Novation Supernova II (minus the Voice Count), could be the modern Ozric synth? 2- Do you think the Argon would be a good modern equivalent to the Waldorf XTk? Thank You for the Great Demo !
Hi I just bought one of these I like this demo very much. Can you say what chord/chords you play at 13:20? After the epic quote "the full colours of the wind that are available to us here"
Your mic is like 6 decibels higher than instrument, still though a great job and demonstration. I wonder why they made the 61 key version with empty space on top of the device. They could have at least added like a looper over there. Something very basic like, choose a measurement and it will loop to the measurement you choose. Maybe 16 buttons, select 1/128-2/1, then activate as you play, and it loops, maybe a mute button, maybe a time stretch/quantize knob. And below that, an 16 step drum sequencer. It could have been a do everything piece of technology. Building patches, building loops, sequencing beats. Maybe just plug straight into that Roland guitar looper, and plug drum machine of choice into modal8.
Nice video/demo - It's crazy how many good synths are out. It's almost exhausting (not in a bad way). But I'm just overwhelmed with synths in my studio and cannot for the life of me sell any of them (studio constipation). But anyway, it's fun listening to what you do with these synths.
Thanks I bought a hydrasynth explorer recently and was looking to another synth as a module what might compliment the explorer I wanted something with a sequencer im more into warmer sounds would this compliment an explorer or 2 close and suggestions? Only other things that are cheap with memory and sequencers I've tripped over are some Roland boutique I live way a way from a store so I rely on TH-cam cheers by the way I loved your hydrasynth tutorials 😊
I'm really into this synth but in doubt about the ASM Hydrasynth desktop module. I'm looking for analog type polyphonic sound design to get more intimate with sounddesign than with a mouse and plug-ins. How would you compare the Cobalt to the Hydra?
Cobalt is a complex virtual analog that replicates analog waveshapes and effects via a semi Wavetable idea. Hydra is a pure Wavetable synth that has a shit ton more modulation.
Ive tried searching everywhere, how do you actually connect an external keyboard to the 8M? I have a Moog Matriarch which I would like to use and also a LInnstrument. If I connect by USB, how do I connect to pc. If it is by Midi, how can I use the midi clock feature? Confused I am lol
thanks for the video. Do you know if it is possible to restart the oscillators on midi note on ? like it restarts the lfos. i want a consistent osc phase at the start of the note. it's cool for percussive sounds, like kicks.
one thing I didn't understand well.... You record the track on the Modal Software? And all the sequences are saved on the Software ? but u can't control 3-4 patches and play them on the same time just one the cobalt right?

oh... as a synthwave "producer" this is a nice synth.
Seems like a well thought out synth, but I'd rather have your sound design skills than the synth.

Would love to see your daw setup+workflow for doing songs this way. The synth is cool, but the really useful and inspiring part is how you use it.

Although it says "virtual analog", it does sound to me a lot like an FM synth.
