I saw a burrowing owl in an abandoned hotel / apartment parking lot just down from the Strat Hotel casino in Las Vegas. The way the bird flew caught my eye so I walked over closer and confirmed. It appeared to be using the fenced off area /old parking lot that was now dirt. 120 W. Cleveland if anyone wants to have a look.
Growing up in south Florida there was pair that took up residence in the center of our middle school bus loop.
Because they are protected here they put a fence around their burrow.
For over a decade whenever you drove past the school you could see two adorable little owls in the middle of a strangely unkempt field in an otherwise pristine school campus.
Wow that incredible that they were their for over a decade, love how the school left the field alone

A pair took up residence in a Publix parking lot median. It was funny that when the authorities protected the burrow with fencing and stopped mowing - when the grass got tall, they abandoned the burrow. They preferred the mowed grass.

I didn't know they ran after their prey! That is AWESOME. Also, I wondered how burrowing animals survived underground with all that CO2 buildup, and this video answers that as well. This video is gold.

A road running " Owl ? Outstanding.
When I lived in Southern Nevada there was a pair living on a trail in the desert I used to use as a shortcut. Whenever I walked by they would follow me and grab all the little critters I spooked.

These guys were ever-present in my South Floridian childhood. There was a burrowing owl nest at my preschool (so the whole back section of the playground became off-limits). My elementary school apparently found several nests during construction (I don't know what became of them, but I hope somehow construction worked around them), thus leading to the burrowing owl becoming the school's official mascot. A park by my house was a frequent home of burrowing owl nests, and there was almost always at least one patch of ground cordoned off with neon orange netting to let people know there were burrowing owls there.
In my head, these are the normal owls, and all the other kinds are the weird ones.
I live near some of the only wild burrowing owls that were left in BC! The loops has an amazing conservation program tho, and their populations have gone up considerably ( still a rare treat, one or two sightings a growing season when I am out working the gardens lol. They come to the backyard pond on occasion, and seen them out and about in the local area since I was a child. They absolutely love to hang out on fence posts and survey the surrounding area. And I do mean at one point some of the very last- there was a period of time when the birds were considered extirpated from the province, but sightings in our area and a few others kept the idea alive for years. (problem is no one knew if they were actually breeding here still, but the birds could definitely still be sighted here). These days they are definitely back to breeding populations though, thanks mostly to conservation efforts and captive releases bolstering whatever stragglers remained. My grandparents liked lots of our local birds but always had stories about those little buggers (+swans and hummingbirds haha) You really gotta look into the story of the historic crash of burrowing owls in BC and their modern day rise. It's a Canadian bird story worth tellinggg (also your range map doesn't include the bc populations either)

Buraqueira!! In northeastern Brazil we have a lot, it's the caatinga owl. Because of they habits, we call them ''buraqueira'', a word that means ''buraco'' (in english, means hole), we can find they even at city, in more remote locations with soil :)) if you get too close to the nest, they fly at you, and even hit you in the head

The sight of these long legged owls running is bizarre, but not as bizarre as that rattlesnake rattle sound coming from their beaks! I'd never heard of these owls, pretty fascinating. And the babies' fluffy bellies are so cute!

We have a huge population of these cute little Burrowing Owls living within 20 miles from us in Cape Coral, Florida. There's a huge governmental effort to protect their habitats. They're very cool to watch. Much smaller than other species of owls around us. After hurricane Ian's destruction and flooding in 2022, there was a huge push to create many man-made burrows for these little ground owls. It seems to be working, as they have made a remarkable comeback since then.
For some reason I’ve always thought these looked like super model owls, lol. Hear me out. They have a smoldering look to their expression, long legs, and a runway strut. Just me? 🤣🤷🏼♀️

I live in northern NM, and I used to see a lot more of these owls, since prairie dogs were waaay more common when I was a kid.
The specific reason I don't see many prairie dogs or burrowing owls anymore is for one reason: parking lots. Parking lots for big stores required wiping out vast swaths of the exact type of land the animals need... So we could install giant heat sinks that barely get half used.

Huge colony lives in Amarillo, Tx with Prairie dogs. They are all over the Texas Panhandle. Its funny when they peek out of a burrow and start head bobbing lol. Nice job on this video. Someday spend some time in Amarillo and see these cool owls up close!

This is one of the best videos I have seen regarding burrowing owls. Very informative and the photography is wonderful. I saw my first burrowing owls at the Bear River Bird Refuge in Utah. I saw them run after prey and sit at the opening of their burrows, turning their heads sideways and checking out their prey. They are so much fun to watch. I hope their future in our current world allows us to enjoy them.

I left a comment on your research request post a while ago, as they have a "flock" of burrowing owls there, and an underground tube system in their flying display area/arena. The 2022 annual Raptor Fair featured these guys running around in and out if the burrowed area, theres some footage of it kicking about on YT, they wouldnt let me post links in my comment though grr! You guys did a great job with this though never the less, thank you 🙂

Years ago i lived in California & encountered these owls regularly. Heard the hiss once, heard the "quail" call once & couldn't figure it out: no quail in that region for miles. Nice work, Lady.

I spent a lot of time at the Fth. Lauderdale Executive Airport in the mid to late 90's.
Burrowing Owls were everywhere.
The Owls were living between the runways & taxiways.
@ night they would sit on the top ends of the hangers.
The long legged silhouette was easy to recognize.

Love them! Their running abilities are quite awesome and their sounds unique. Unrelated side note: first round of about 12 white throated sparrows arrived in my back yard today in central VA!
I wonder...maybe a White-throated from my neck of the woods.
The leading edge of White -throated Sparrows started arriving in NE Oklahoma the past couple of weeks. 👍

Interesting little owls. They have that intense owl look in their eyes, as if they know everything youve ever done wrong and are sparing no judgement. Like a wise old judge who has seen it all, and you know your sob story wont fool him

I live in South Florida and feel privileged to have had many encounters with these comical owls. There was a fenced burrow in the parking lot of my college and one day I found myself hemmed in by an inconsiderate person parking too close to my car. The owl burrow was right behind me and while I was executing some complex maneuvers to get out of my parking space I had to back the car up right to the fence around their burrow... I felt so bad about disturbing them but the sight in my rear-view mirror of a group of angry little owls bobbing like crazy while scolding me was so comical I couldn't help laughing. I sometimes see them on evening walks just wandering around the neighborhood streets and they don't seem too bothered by my presence.
This was worth the wait. It’s fantastic. I know you put a lot of work into it and it shows. You should be exceedingly proud of yourself right now. Best and thank you.

I love owls! We've had a family of them in one of the old out buildings on the property for years. Just last night, one scared the bejeezus out of me as it flew out to hunt at about 10pm. It was huge and deadly silent. 🤯🦉😆

Wonderful Leslie these creatures and the prairie dogs were the highlight of my two year residency in New Mexico . I also saw a pair in Ontario CA outside a racetrack that was also the best part of my day. 👑🌎
They have been spotted near the Portland OR airport, and also in the Okanagan, area of BC, where there is a Burrowing Owl winery.

These owls look like a Tex Avery production😆
I don't know how I missed this one. There used to be extensive colonies of these owls on the sides of the Santa Ana River bed levee, when it was composed of large stones and dirt on the insides, and packed dirt on the outsides. They left when the rocks and dirt were replaced by cement. You could always see bunches of them down there.
The distribution map is interesting. I see they're in most all of Florida, but not the panhandle, and on the island of Hispaniola they're in Haiti but not in the Dominican Republic.

The burrowing owls are down in south Florida. I was on the work crew for the (grass) grow-in on a newly constructed golf course. The borrowing owls took over nesting in the drainage system in the fairways. We had to wait until after nesting season to finish out the drainage.

There is a protected habitat for burrowing owls at the off leash dog park that I frequent and they are adorable, I just love them! Difficult to spot, though. Thanks for another entertaining and informative video, Leslie!

Hola Lesley I haven’t heard the 🦉 that use to visit our backyard pecan tree it was winter the last time I noticed that it came to visit us and 🦉 hoot at 3:25 am now is spring here in Texas and the weather outside still settling from freezing cold to a warmer spring weather 😊I’m not sure if if it’s going to come back soon I sure I miss it It makes me feel like I leave in a woods house 😊Gracias for always making this lovely videos I don’t see that in animal planet 😝 lol… keep up the great work!!!! Yeah I didn't realize how hard of a task it would be to get videos of them running. Most birdwatchers take photos, what I find anyway. Glad it worked out in the end.

I used to watch them sometimes in the desert south of Boise. Maybe they liked the area because the ground squirrels are rampant down there. Cool birds, for sure.

Thank you, Lesley, for this excellent and informative video! When I was in Winnipeg in 2019, my group went to a park with a nature center that had a burrowing owl on exhibit. It was in a very large prairie-like indoor yard, and was at the entrance of its burrow. I had such a hard time dragging myself away to catch up with the group! I wish I could encourage a sweet monogamous couple in my yard, but I’m in a coastal, not a prairie, environment, and I’m afraid the water level would be too much for these sweethearts. But I have plenty of voles, mice, insects, snakes, and other yummy prey!

Cool owl. Thanks for sharing about the burrowing owls. I didn't know much about them. Unfortunately my state gets rid of prairie dogs. One thing I don't like about Wyoming. There's no good reason for doing it. Even our game and Fish dept says leave the prairie dogs alone. They are beneficial for everything. What a neat owl. Thanks Leslie! Isn't that what monogamous means?
They remain with one partner throughout the course of a breeding cycle. It's thought that do sometimes stay together for years afterwards in some cases though.
