Bilge pumps, how to fit a hose that seems too tight - made easy.

  • How can you get that hose onto your bilge pump fitting, when it just doesn’t want to squeeze on? If you’ve been maintaining your boat, chances are at some point you have come across the problem when you are fitting a new bilge pump or seacocks or some other marine pipe and the hose you have chosen just doesn’t want to fit over the fitting.
Sometimes no amount of pushing and levering will get the pipe or hose onto the fitting, unless you know the trick!
At this point you might be thinking let’s just get the next size hose up, but there are two reasons why often that doesn’t work: one is that the next sized hose up is actually too loose and in this case when you try and squeeze the hose down onto the pipe fitting with Jubilee clips or other hose clips the hose does not make a good seal. The other reason why it might not be an option to get the next size up of hose is that the hose you already have is a perfect match to the fitting at the other end (for example the skin-fitting that passes through the hull of the boat).
Sometimes it seems more often than not, you have to battle to get a tight hose onto a fitting. In this guide we show you how to do this the easy way.
    What you will need:
    • Your hose (cut to length)
    • Your bilge pump or fitting
    • Jubilee clips or other pipe clips
    • Washing up liquid
    • A dry cloth
    • A freshly boiled kettle of water
When you are setting up and getting everything ready make sure you put the Jubilee clips (or other chosen pipe clips) onto the hose in advance if the other end of the hose is already attached. It is very annoying if you forget this, as you then either have to pull the hose off again or completely unwind the Jubilee clips to get them on (which takes ages!)
When you are sure you have everything ready the next step is to smear some washing-up liquid onto the outside of the fitting. I don’t suggest putting any one the hose. You will now have a slippery fitting and probably a slippery hand (which you don’t want) so clean your hand with the cloth at this point.
Next step is to boil the kettle (or pan) of water. Doing the next part will be easy! as long as you get the timing right - these are the steps:
    • Have everything to hand
    • Put the end of the hose into the boiled water and wait for a minute or two
    • Pull the hose out of the water and use a cloth the quickly dry off the outside of the hose
    • Push the hose onto the fitting (which still has the washing-up liquid on to make it slippery)
    • Push the hose fully on to the fitting as quickly as you can, this works best if you can do it in one go, because as soon as the hose touches the fitting it starts losing heat, and it is the heat which made it pliable
If you followed these steps and ended up with the hose only part-way on and couldn’t get it any further, then the chances are that starting again for a second attempt will work perfectly as you now have had a practice run and know exactly the sequence, timing and how hard you need to push. If the hose is still stubborn then a bit of sideways to-and-fro movement as you push it on should help.
Lastly is to put on the Jubilee clips, ideally you will have room for two clips for security.

Good video, makes sense from a physics viewpoint. Heat the tubing to make it soft as well as expand it. I used Dishwashing liquid over the connector and heated tubing end in boiling water for 2 min. Began installation at 45 degree angle. It worked. You can even continue torque it into place minutes afterwards. Thanks for that.

@Boat Fittings perfect video i bought a 25mm hose for my 28mm bilge pump. Popped the pipe into hot water for 5 minutes until floppy ish straight away it went on. With a good tight fitting exactly what you need on a bilge pump. 28mm pipe is expensive and will definitely be to loose.

I tried this trick just now on my gas powered backpack sprayer. One of the hoses sprung a leak. This trick worked great. Thank you so much!

After searching for an hour realized there were no fittings that would fit it so got a hose of almost the same size. This did the trick it took me a couple of tries but it is on there very snug. I wish I had seen this video before I opened the tape which was my last resort. Thank you for sharing!

Can also use a heat gun. Recently went to a bigger pump with a 1.125" hose outlet. Attwood T-1200. Was a Rule 500 there so the hose is 3/4". I found a black rubber hose end which had been stretched over an old Sherwood G7 pump. That fits the Attwood outlet and the 3/4" rubber heater hose fits into the black rubber hose tightly. No clamp needed on the hose slid into hose arrangement but could add one.

This very issue caused me the biggest headache 😢, why on earth don’t bilge pump manufacture’s just make the outlets to suit standard hose barbs and hoses, I wasted so much time and money trying to get a good solution when all I needed was this video, lol, I didn’t think nylon hose would stretch with hot water so didn’t bother trying it 😩😩 thanks for the info 👍🏼

    thanks

Hi thanks for your comment. In the video the internal diameter of the hose was 25mm to fit on a pump with a 29mm outlet. The hose that was used in the video could be found in the following link :

Absolutely do not do this on a boat. Get a correct size hose instead. What are you planning to do the day the hose splits down the end and leaks and you’re in the middle of the ocean? You can’t just cut the end off and put it back on and retighten, if you need something to heat it with and the engine isn’t able to run without the broken hose and the rain is pouring down.
When on a boat, prepare for the worst.
Do so in other parts of life too.

Someone is probably going to comment: "it’s just a bilge pump"
There are other hoses in a boat too.
Someone is probably also going to comment: "but the next size up is too big"
Then it is not the correct size. Always bring a caliper.

And, one more thing: don’t use Jubilee brand hose clamps. For some reason I don’t understand, they have mismatched the band length to the curvature of the worm holder, so all of them create a D shape when tightened. It’s literally just my Jubilee, UK branded hose clamps that do this. None of the worm style hose clamps I buy from china do this. Just don’t use the ones that have a thin band with holes punched in it, those are weak. Use the ones that look like Jubilee clips but aren’t branded Jubilee.
