      With each and every instance of the Mind of the Night granting us a feast of a moving picture, I promptly wheeze forcibly, levitate 16 meters off the ground, and spin at a velocity of not less than 280 km/s. This is, without fail, done for a time period equal to 19 rotations of our home planet about its axis.

    For me, the easiest to spot reference to Evangelion would have been the red on black text of "sound only" with the HOME logo in Phantoms, very reminiscent of the Seele communication screens. Really liked that reference

      about 15 minutes in I pieced together that it might be evangelion inspired from the name and the fact that its taking place in 1999, close to the time of the second impact, but thought it could still be a coincidence. it was all but confirmed for me when I saw the seele sound only reference. that was such a cool surprise

    • @bigblue344
      @bigblue344 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

      Sort of. The main reason why analog horror is so popular is because of its presentation and aesthetic. Old technology that is breaking down that was recovered, finding something that you are not supposed to find. The second reason why its so popular is that it drip feeds information which has always been extremely popular, from the show Lost to how Resident Evil hates random notes scattered about to give you some information about what is going on while you can still fill in some details yourself.

    • @squidgirl0413
      @squidgirl0413 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@bigblue344 im also willing to bet that the presentation makes up for a lack of resources, meaning that the skills of art and filmmaking can shine through a bit more; its harder to see all the individual flaws in a 3D model if the camera is fuzzy, and if you can't do 3D modeling, a PSA or instructional video is as good an excuse as any to flex your graphic design or 2D artwork skills. the flaws in the art styles are hidden by the format, while the skills of the artist in question are still very visible. this was the same reason a lot of games we consider visually ugly nowadays were considered the height of realism when they released; because the lower resolution of monitors and TVs back in the day meant that the low-poly models appeared much more high fidelity, giving the illusion of realism.

    • @Soulraven2735
      @Soulraven2735 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@bigblue344Also, personally, because of how analog horror is often presented through tapes of news reports and educational tapes, it is more "real" compared to traditional style horror movies. Even compared to the found footage style of something like the Blair Witch Project, the more informational style of analog horror lends a sort of in universe credibility: it's the difference between a video of monster attacking a group of people, and there being educational tapes about said monster and how to avoid it attacking you.

    The Stages video makes the Starkill sound like something you'd see in a real-time strategy video game. Especially the "Self-Replication" slide: the way "altars" and "temples" are described remind me of how certain units can only be built with specific buildings in those games. If anything the Starkill reminds me of the Zerg - they gather biomass to use in their structures, assimilate life-forms into their hivemind, and specific buildings can produce specific types of units: "altars" are like their hatcheries where they can only produce smaller life-forms, and "temples" would be like their hives or greater spires where they can produce larger units.

    Then it just becomes a pretty standard meat monster making zombies/a hive mind. The delivery is pretty interesting with the new formats, but damn, it falls right into so many "eldritch horror" stereotypes that it's just not worth watching past the first couple episodes.

    This type of series is why I say no idea can ever truly be overdone, there's always unique and interesting takes you can do with any sort of material so long as you have the desire to experiment and be playful with the ideas and themes core to the experience, and some outside inspiration goes a long way too.

    Phantoms is where I kind of fell out of the setting. The wire frame graphics used in the video don't fit the period of time, and just killed all suspension of disbelief for me. Sure, you could say that an underfunded government agency would have decade old tech, but it still just feels anachronistic.
    Also, the CIA cannot legally operate within the borders of the US. It would be the FBI, if it was for law enforcement purposes. But that might be too pedantic of a gripe, so I won't hold it against the creator.
    Still, up to that point I really like it. It's inventive and really well made. The 3d modeling is amazing. I love the story that's being told.

    Hey nick,
    I’ve been thinking about starting up my own unfiction series recently, and I’ve been going over some of your videos and really listening to how you critique and encourage certain aspects of different projects. It’s been really inspirational to me, in fact. I don’t want to share any details on what i have planned, but let’s just say that it’s heavily inspired by projects like this and Gemini Home Entertainment. Both of those series really hit close to home because i actually live in the area that Gemini takes place in, and seeing how effective horror can be created by just about anyone really motivated me to get this project underway. I made previous attempts to start a web series, but realized i was going about it all wrong by making my clues too cryptic and having a complete lack of experience in the genre. Anyways all i wanted to say is that having someone with your experience giving advice has been a huge help to me!

    I had seen this years ago but thought the 8 minute episode where the creature lands and emerges was the finale. And even then I considered it one of the best analog horrors I’d seen. I had never seen the following videos with the assimilations until today and my mind is blown! Horror with creatures and animals is my absolute favorite type and The Thing 1982 is my favorite movie of all time. So this has now bumped up to perhaps my top favorite analog horror project (so far...) Great coverage as always.

    It looks incredibly well made, paced and seeded for intrigue to delight to scifi horror nerds like myself. but I’m going to need some more complex interactions between humans and aliens than just “worship or kill” to keep me hooked.
    Either these wiggly boys are extremely flat bad guys, artfully presented- which can be fun in its own way if the story is short and very weird- or I get some interesting methods of communication and relationships that shape at least one human’s view of the world. I’ve been eating too good lately to watch another iteration of War of the Worlds.

    This is a perfect example of what I mean when I tell ppl the analog horror genre isn't dead, nor is it dying, it's in a slump. It just needs creative originality from more content creators to pull it out of that slump. Monument Mythos, Midwest Angelica, and Greylock do this beautifully. Hell, Angel Hare, while it doesn't do anything for me personally, is still another stellar example that has gripped so many ppl with the level of creativity behind it, and rightfully so!
    Playing Silent Hill and watching the Ju-On films as a kid terrified me so much, that afterwards it made me think I was desensitized to all other horror for years, since nothing hollywood, the indie film scene, nor the gaming industry has ever produced has been even remotely scary for me. So I just started enjoying horror for the plot, until that got boring.
    Analog horror has renewed my love of horror, and has done it in such a unique way and I genuinely want to see it grow even more.

    I thought it was alright. Some of the visuals were great, but other times the 3D graphics stood out from the real footage in a jarring way. More importantly though, the story never really grabbed me; it felt like a lot of things I've seen before, and what was unique to this story wasn't quite enough to capture my interest. Season 1 also felt like it ended really abruptly, right in the middle of what felt like the buildup to a climax, which seemed odd to me.
    Still, it's definitely an overall solid series, and I had a good time watching it. I'll probably watch season 2, just to see where it goes, and maybe it will grip me more than the first season. I hope we get to see more of the actual Midwest Angelica movie at some point in the new season. It would be strange if the thing the series is named after only came up once.
