I never, EVER found the gold/silver test to be helpful in determining undertone, and this explains why. Even though there are plenty of colors that don't work for me, both gold and silver look equally good on me as a cool-leaning neutral, IMO. Honestly, I think that both gold and silver flatter pretty much everyone. It just depends on the vibe you're going for.
That’s because there are a bunch of golds and the finishes can change a lot! Brushed silver is much more tolerable for autumns and springs can work with very shiny silver, for example. But no cool or cool-neutral season will ever find a really brassy gold or bronze flattering at all, and some very warm people will just never find silver (or even iron) that looks nice on them.
That’s not quite how color analysis works, it depends on your skin undertone for the most part. I’m not sure how hair color temperature changes as it grays, but I would guess that it doesn’t switch from warm to cool. Gray hair can be warm or cool toned. Figuring out your skin undertone is harder for some than others, but it should not be different from when you were younger. If you feel that all colors looked good back then, you were/are likely a more neutral colored person (rather than leaning extremely cool or extremely warm).
The silver jewellery shown at 3:10 is called oxidised silver. These pieces of jewelry are designed to have texture, then are placed in a chemical bath for instant oxidations, and then the piece of jewelry is polished, so only the deepest parts stay black, creating interesting designs
This was a really interesting video! Could you please talk about choosing colours for wedding dresses according to the colour types? Both "white" for the different colour seasons, and effects of other colours for a wedding outfit (like what colour for a given season could come off as celebratory).
I love that you’ve toned down the beep noises in the videos it makes it much easier to hear you and concentrate on what you are saying! This video is super helpful. I don’t know my color season but I suspect neutral-soft part of the color wheel. Whether it’s gold or silver isn’t as important to me as whether or not it’s a softer more matte metal, vs super shiny and bright and blingy. The sparkles that girls go crazy over seem to overpower me, but when I wear matte soft jewelry it doesn’t compete with me, and complements my skin more, like it’s absorbing the light rather than reflecting it.
A good in depth analysis as usual Jenn! Most people oversimplify this topic to the degree that it's not that helpful. I'm some variety of spring and look good in bright silver and quite yellow golds and bronze is good too. Light golds just merge into my skin colour.
Wow this is THE BEST content I've seen on jewelry! And I think it makes a lot of sense from personal experience. I'm a Dark Autumn and I have some neutral gold jewelry but it looks so harmonious with my skin it almost disappears (also, kinda of dainty pieces). However, my antique silver jewelry stands out much more (which is an effect I want in jewelry) so I quite like wearing silver that's a bit darker. I do feel depth it's the most important characteristic in my season. The only kind of jewelry I feel it can be unflaterring on me are pearls (which is a shame since I like pearls a lot). They can look really starkly white against my warm olive skin (except if I go for rosé pearls) but I'm gonna wear them as statement, I guess lol Light blue stones and diamonds can be tricky as well.
This is defo the best video on jewellery and so glad you mentioned rose gold/copper! I believe I'm warm leaning but not sure from there, the hair colour I get seen the "most healthiest" is a deep coppery auburn and champagne and rose gold seems jewellery is best on me.
I think I'm a Deep Winter, and I always leaned to tarnish silver and textures gold, and I like big pieces.of jewelry. I always thought it fitted me, and you just explained why. Always struggled with small and shiny pieces. I bought some due to "peer pressure" but ended up never wearing them.
Same. The kind of dainty, multi-layered jewelry, that has been fashionable these last couple of years, looks 'silly' on me. This has really confused me, because I'm fairly 'average sized' in both height and weight. So I knew, that it wasn't simply about body size vs jewelry size. Big, bold statement pieces, on the other hand...even fairly 'out there' stuff...it just suits me.
This video is so on point! Being a Bright Spring (I think, still learning) I could never wear too yellow gold jewelleries or too muted oxidized jewelleries because how weird & out of place they looked!
Yes, I’m aware that rose gold is “supposed” to be the best metal for neutral or even neutral/olive skin tones, but I’ve found that isn’t true in my case. My skin tone is a medium neutral olive (leaning slightly warm…& I tan well), but rose gold is NOT flattering on me & I can’t wear ALL colors so some of these rules don’t really apply. I can wear both silver & gold-toned jewelry, but in-truth, a more muted or antiqued gold or bronze metal is much more flattering on me- & I actually like a more vibrant polish in a metal, rather than matte as it gives my skin some life.🤷
My skin is very white. But I tan with no problems and can get fairly brown, and yet yellow gold overwhelms me. I guess the low intensity of my eyes and hair are the cause of that? My hair, my eyes and my skin don't really have a huge contrast between them. I have a muddy hair color in that it's ash blonde with lots of dark auburn. My eyes are muddy because I have 3 colors in my eyes that are very dulled in color but they change color with whatever I wear. So any bright color is out of the question for me. If I wear yellow I look yellow all over like I'm jaundiced. It has to be a heavily muted yellow to look good against my skin. No metals look good on me if they're brightly colored or too darkly colored. So far the only metal I buy is stainless steel earrings. It has no brilliance to it and is a really toned down silver color. Rose gold looks awful on me, I think I'm too yellow to wear it. I love jewelry, but it's really hard to find some that is beautiful but not brilliant. Sterling silver is way too bright with my coloring, but oh my there are some wonderful pieces on Amazon I would love to wear. When my hair was darker, before the gray came in, I had more contrast and could wear more colors, but now ....the gray has lightened my hair somewhat and I seem to have less contrast to work with. It's very frustrating to find clothes with colors that don't make me look sick in some way. Pastels make me look washed out, dark colors do the same. Jeez!!
I am a bright spring, now I finally understand why I can't pull off dainty jewelry. I have always thought that dainty jewelry did't match my thick eyebrows. But now I understand the colour aspect of it 😊
Thats sooo truee and I’ve struggled with it. I read an article by Christine scaman on different types of gold for warm seasons. Ive always neglected gold because a) they were to bright b) they were to light. I’ve found out that my best gold is a very dark 20-22k gold with a greenish tint in a Matt design is the perfect match for my complexion as a true autumn 🍂
This makes so much sense of my personal experience. I can wear gold, Silver, Rose gold, gem stones and pearls. The important thing is they had to be shiny. Some golds and silvers don't look quite right but usually it's because they're too mustard, greenish or dull. It's one of the many factors why I was confused about my season all my life. I thought I was a summer and should only wear silver, but cheap jewelry usually looks better when it's gold plated and doesn't fade as quickly as silver, so I have more gold in my collection. Of course now that I know I'm a bright winter I understand that coolness(silver) is not the most important aspect.
Jenn, this video is so helpful! I’ve been torn for the longest time about what metal suits me best. I had it in my head that because I’m fair, silver was my only option. Add to that my wedding set is platinum, so my type-A personality told me I could only be matchy-matchy and wear silver. Well, after I self-diagnosed myself as a soft autumn, it turns out it’s all in the tone. A soft, buttery 9 or 10 ct yellow gold is so flattering on me. I also really only look fresh and alive in a bright, white silver/platinum. So now here I am, mixing metals and loving it. Thank you so much for helping me gain some clarity xxx
My sister is a light spring. Lighter yellow golds and rose golds look amazing on her. White gold washes her out. I'm a true summer. White gold and rose gold look good on me.
“a piece of dust” 🤣🤣this had me cracking up Oh the pain of wanting a certain look you adore and not being able to figure why it never looks *that* way on you
OOooo please actually do a red haired video for the array of true redheads. I'm a super fair (always the lightest foundation in all makeup brands and sometimes even that is too dark) redhead, bright orange hair, dark blue eyes, clear eylashes and eyebrows. There is so much variation among redheads and so much misinformation about makeup, clothing and beauty in general for us 2%-ers. The old school way of thinking has people suggesting heavy peaches and orangey makeup, but warm pinks actually look the best on my particular colouring. Clearly a spring, and a true spring I think, but it's different than a blonde true spring for example.
For men its not about seasons, its about what color the t shirts or clothing are, black and dark clothing are best with silver, gold is best with white light clothing. Also men with 2 tone watches like to mix and match to match with the watch. Especially if gold jewelry has white diamonds, that also mixes and matches well.
My ears have multiple piercings so instead of having them all one metal color, I mix them. Gold, silver, gunmetal gray, black, shiny, matte.... that way no matter what I'm wearing at least 2 will match 😁
It's a wear whatever you like thing. Big small shiny muted colourful or black a bunch all together or one piece because it's simply what u like. My jewellery philosophy
I look great with most tones golds and some silver jewerly looks okay, but I just HATE how Rose Gold looks on me. I odnt hate rose gold, I like it very much on other people, but I cant stand how it looks on me. Thanks to you, now I understand why. Thank you for this video!
Okay so actually, I hate to be "that guy" but I actually still would LOVE you to do your full Red Hair video. Because of watching your videos over the past month, I'm pretty sure I've come to find I'm an Olive skin tone, which I would have never ever considered without you. Even after all I learned in Cosmetology school (along with continued education courses), and with 15 years working in the Beauty industry; you were the one who enlightened me as to why, even though sometimes Neutral foundations and such would "work" on me, they still felt "off". Not to make this a whole novel, but I come from a family of natural redheads on my grandmother's side, but as a mixed-race person, I ended up with an Olive-leaning complexion; and I've always LOVED my mother's and grandmother's hair, but every time I try a "natural red" (either dye or lace-front), I just always turn directly into Princess Fiona. The red hair FIGHTS my complexion! It turns me visibly "green" (to my eyes, at least), so I'd LOVE a more in-depth analysis on Red hair, especially to see if Red hair is possible with Olive skin outside of the "Stop Sign" red or "Ruby reds" that are just a little too loud. P.S. Before anyone asks, yes, I've tried "99J" (if you know, you know), I still look green with 99J.
Wow! It’s such a new concept to me! I’m a rather cool toned person so I thought I should be buying all the shiny silvery things, but somehow I tend to prefer matte silver and white gold. Now I know because I need some softness! ❤ P.S. It would be nice to see you talk about Kibbie body type because I don’t really see examples with m southeast Asian body 😢
I'm actually coming out with a Kibbe video this week ❤ It's just typing myself (for now), which is a good intro to the topic and I can always elaborate more!
Even as a kid I always liked animus golds and silver because I thought it looked better on my skin but as I got older I wore brighter ones too, interesting how as a kid I knew what was best right away but trends over the years changed what I preferred
I'm a spring and own one pair of earrings that are combination silver and gold toned and a turquoise and silver bracelet and ring that were my mother's. She was a summer and looked fine in silver. I just plain do not like myself in silver-toned jewelry, period. I hang on to the silver-gold earrings because I own a blouse with tiny silver buttons that I'm too lazy to replace with gold-colored or pearl buttons.
I’m a toned winter and I prefer silver, the most white 😂 on my skin. Rose gold looks worse than gold, because gold, at least work as a contrast to the eyes and hair, it’s saturated and bright in color. But I hate shiny pieces with glass effect or sparkly ones.
Ahhhhh this makes sense! I usually gravitate to silver because it always looks good on me, and it's more affordable. But I've always felt like gold looks fine on me too. Watching your videos, I've realized that colors being muted is what's more important than color temp for me. I'd say I'm borderline between summer and autumn, because a muted rust red looks amazing on me. Super saturated colors wash me out, even if they're "supposed" to work on me, so I leave those for my accessories. Doesn't stop me from wearing a ton of black though 😆
Interesting! I think i am a Bright Spring, so it's virtually the opposite for me haha. I look good in silver, gold or rose gold, as long as it's a shiny, smooth finish. The burnished/ antique look doesn't look as good, which is sad because i love that aesthetic 😬 I love gemstone jewellery also, and the polished surface looks much better on me than the "raw stone" look.
My best metal is Antique gold . It really harmonises with my skin tone , I'm a warm ,golden olive . I was wondering, could you do a video on beauty spots? I notice they really bring something that seems to add to the beauty of a face.
I feel self conscious when I wear gold, even though I think they look fine, I feel self conscious about them. So I only have pearls and silver toned jewelry.
Cool summer here and my metal shouldn’t be too bright /light silver but more of a mid tone otherwise it’s too overwhelming. But as long as it’s small it’s ok. 18-24k gold is the worst but 14k sort of still work as I am olive it is not clashing as much as it would with someone that is more pinkish… it’s all about trial and error 😅
The part where you say light season colours, the picture on the right shows a pale skinned dark haired dark eyed woman wearing a pale-ish blue. That’s made me sit up as I’m supposed to be a bright spring yet I’m feeling recently that bright colours wear me. But muted tones dull me. Tints seem to work better, but not too pale. So the example of that lady was interesting.
It's cause her hair is a muted mousy brown so muted colors fit her. Its Not intesly constrated to her pale skin like it would be if it was a rich chocolate or brassy chestnut brown
Contrast + light seasons can still work - otherwise there would be no Asians in light or muted seasons! It's just relative - the lady I used as an example is a famous Korean actress (Lee Young-Ae) and compared to Blonde examples yes she has more contrast, but compared to other Asians her contrast is on the lower side, like how the other comment described her hair as a "muted mousy brown" :)
@@stylerefinement while you're here can I give a video request/inspo? How to take realistic photos? For the purpose of online shopping, face/body shape, kibble type, season coloring... I feel we only take flattering selfies that don't compute to reality. Say mobile phone cameras is our basic. Front/back, what angle and settings will do for the truth? I'm seeing your videos and despite my newfound knowledge I can't seem to reconsile objectively the discrepancy between my (unfiltered, unphotosopedd) pictures. It varies significantly due to anfles and lighting. so which is the truth?
I think i look terrible in rose gold. Reg gold looks fine, but my best is silver... but with rose gold supposed to be a neutral, i cant figure out why it makes me look sick!
I am a bright winter and wonder why I can wear rose gold? Gold looks ok as jewelry but not as clothing. And white gold looks good on me just like rose gold. Why is this?
I’m also a bright winter and what I learned was that bright winters typically have a neutral skin colour even though the undertone tends to be cool. Rose gold, having some pink in it, is a neutral toned metal, as it’s a mix of cool pink and warm yellow. I can’t say that I know this for sure but it’s just something I picked up along the way.
I think as a Bright Winter, what's important is the brightness rather than the temperature. So though you technically are cool, you lean more neutral. As such, a shiny yellow or rose gold (warm but bright) flatters you more than a burnished silver (cool but muted). As a Bright Spring things are quite similar for me too. Technically am a warm season but lean more neutral and so can take a lot more coolness than many other warm seasons (for instance i can pull off polished silver jewellery much better than an Autumn or a Soft/ True Spring). On the other hand, dull finishes or super light colours don't look so good on me. So it's always silver with a chromium, polished finish over antique silver or a very whitish silver. Cut and polished gemstones over raw unpolished gems. Shiny yellow, rose or white gold over oxidized bronze jewellery. As a Bright Winter, am guessing it's similar for you!
Also as to why gold looks ok as jewellery but not clothing - Jewellery typically takes up much less "visual space" than an entire clothing item. So as a neutral-cool season, you can take warm colours in small doses (i assume by gold you mean either yellow or rose gold, not white gold). But if you had a huge block of gold near your face, for instance, it would be too much. It's the same for me as Bright Spring (neutral-warm) silver earrings or chain looks great but not if i wore a silver evening gown. I mean i suppose it wouldn't look terrible if it was a bright silver, but it still wouldn't look the best on me (would be amazing on you though!)
Good points here. Mmm… there are different “shades” of gold and silver - You have to wear jewelry that harmonizes with ALL of your features. You may be warm-toned, but are you bright or soft? Are Dark or light? You have to pick a gold that compliments those features. E.g., I’m a dark autumn, that means I only LEAN warm. I have a medium chroma and medium to high contrast. I look best in gold but only gold that meets that criteria - google champagne gold, or vintage gold and that’s my best gold… it has to be bright, shiny and not at all dull or I will look dull. Hence I will not wear gold like - copper (it’s ruddy and dull), - brass (it’s low chroma and dull) - yellow gold (too warm) Same is true for silver. A deep winter may look stunning in platinum silver, but they will probably look plain in metal/gunmetal silver.
Matched to soft summer but for me, it’s YG>silver/WG. I get more compliments in YG because it matches my personality better. With brilliant or radiant diamonds, WG as the diamonds do all the talk and whiter they look, the better. RG is hard to place because too coppery and it’s not as complementary, so I find 18k RG better. I love an emerald cut diamond set in RG, and the Cartier JUC RG>YG because of the design is subtler and doesn’t stand out so much.
Please❤ if you made a video about what type of long bang shape looks good for Face I’d be so happy (I don’t know if straight bangs, face framing bangs, curly etc and where it should curl to enhance my face )
As a cool toned olive I was bummed out at first that gold doesn’t suit me but alas, there’s a chance! I’m a cool winter (cool - dark - muted). Is there any way to find out what silver/gold suits oneself without having to buy? Lol
You just gotta try it out yourself so going into a physical store would help! Once you have an understanding you can shop online etc without trying on every single piece :)
I would advise against orange if you have olive skin!! It'd bring out too much yellowness in the skin... of course depends on the person but based on personal experience XD
Whyyyyyyyy don't you like rose gold?? 😅 i think it's so pretty!! Personally i think i look good in ALL of yellow gold, white gold, silver and rose gold, as well as gemstone jewellery - as long as they are all smooth, shiny, highly polished finishes Though rose gold is *slightly* more flattering than yellow gold, which again is *slightly* more flattering than white gold/ silver. I do feel though that burnished/ antique finishes look kind of off, regardless of whether it's silver or gold. Of course all this is what's in my own head and not what anyone has told looks good or bad on me 😂😂 but as a Bright Spring (which i THINK i am lol) for whom brightness would be more important than temperature, i think this makes perfect sense 😊😊
LOL I don't know why!! Some people were commenting how rose gold washes them out and I want to test it on myself to see if I feel the same way, but I haven't owned a single piece of rose gold jewelry for YEARS so I can't even test the theory out 😂 What you described does make sense! Brightness must be such an important factor for you if none of burnished / antique / matte styles seem off!
I love how big jewelry looks on other women, but it's too much of an accent for me. I've always been pissed about that and kept looking for a peice that will look good on me. Now I know that it's just not my tipe of jewelry and I might even accept this idea at some point.
Indian with very green veins and bloodless pale yet wheatish-brown complexion. I look gaudy and cheap in gold. It's only the silver or silver/oxidized jewellery that looks good on me. On the other hand, light colour clothes wash me out.
Vibe & personal preference plays such a huge role in choosing jewelry ❤
That’s because there are a bunch of golds and the finishes can change a lot! Brushed silver is much more tolerable for autumns and springs can work with very shiny silver, for example. But no cool or cool-neutral season will ever find a really brassy gold or bronze flattering at all, and some very warm people will just never find silver (or even iron) that looks nice on them.
I love how you make us realize that seasonal color theory isn't so black and white- it answers so many questions!
Also, your hair looks pretty :)
Aw thank you so much for the compliment! I’m glad you’re enjoying my content ❤️
As a white haired lady, silver looks best but I still wear gold and rose gold because I love it. When I was a brunette, all the colors looked good.😢
That’s not quite how color analysis works, it depends on your skin undertone for the most part. I’m not sure how hair color temperature changes as it grays, but I would guess that it doesn’t switch from warm to cool. Gray hair can be warm or cool toned.

My skin looks good with both gold and silver, but rose gold is a big no for me. I look sickly when I wear rose gold.
same!!!
same!! it makes me look so washed out
Same issue here...
Is that why I don't like rose gold?! I don't even have anything in rose gold to check this theory out lol
And I love in order Rose gold, then yellow gold then silver. I can wear all but rose gold is best!
My ears have multiple piercings so instead of having them all one metal color, I mix them. Gold, silver, gunmetal gray, black, shiny, matte.... that way no matter what I'm wearing at least 2 will match 😁
Haha I like this approach :D
It's a wear whatever you like thing. Big small shiny muted colourful or black a bunch all together or one piece because it's simply what u like. My jewellery philosophy
I look great with most tones golds and some silver jewerly looks okay, but I just HATE how Rose Gold looks on me. I odnt hate rose gold, I like it very much on other people, but I cant stand how it looks on me. Thanks to you, now I understand why. Thank you for this video!
I'm the same way - not sure why I just can't see myself wearing it although I don't mind it on others at all!
Let me see what I can come up with ❤❤❤
Wow! It’s such a new concept to me! I’m a rather cool toned person so I thought I should be buying all the shiny silvery things, but somehow I tend to prefer matte silver and white gold. Now I know because I need some softness! ❤
P.S. It would be nice to see you talk about Kibbie body type because I don’t really see examples with m southeast Asian body 😢
I'm actually coming out with a Kibbe video this week ❤ It's just typing myself (for now), which is a good intro to the topic and I can always elaborate more!
@@stylerefinement YES❤️ I love your videos so much cuz they’re so easy to understand!
The burnished/ antique look doesn't look as good, which is sad because i love that aesthetic 😬
I love gemstone jewellery also, and the polished surface looks much better on me than the "raw stone" look.
Black will always be my favorite color choice ❤
I agree 100% - trial & error!
@@JB-tt6ct I think given the fact that her hair is dark and skin is pale gives the contrast
I’d love to see a video about colors and gray hair!
Hello Jean, it's interesting, thank You soo much for another video!💕
You are so welcome!❤️

Could it be your undertone? Maybe there’s a subtle pinkish hue that is accentuated by the rose in the gold?
Also as to why gold looks ok as jewellery but not clothing -
Jewellery typically takes up much less "visual space" than an entire clothing item.
I believe I’m a dark autumn and I definitely prefer bigger darker jewellery. I love bronze or a blackened rose gold. Very yellow gold doesn’t work.
I think that dark/deep seasons really wear bold accessories SO well! ❤
i watch so many of these videos but i never feel like i understand how to find my "season", or to know if i'm a clear or not.
I look best in white gold or platinum. Now that I am a little tan, a light yellow gold looks okay. Rose gold isn't my thing
I have black dye hair, l am redhead.
My skintone is warm olive.
All gold jewelry ✨️ ❤❤
Good points here. Mmm… there are different “shades” of gold and silver -
You have to wear jewelry that harmonizes with ALL of your features.
Hence I will not wear gold like
- copper (it’s ruddy and dull),
- brass (it’s low chroma and dull)
- yellow gold (too warm)
Same is true for silver.
I do have a similar video on "Bangs or No Bangs" where I touch on the different types of bangs :) You should check it out!
Interestingly, I'm a DW and higher-karat gold looks better on me bc it's darker. Silver much better but only once it gains a slight tarnish.
Good point about higher karat = darker! You must also be able to borrow DA colors well :)
@@stylerefinement Only the brighter and darker ones. Anything that overlaps with Soft or Warm Autumn/Spring and I'm out.
Once you have an understanding you can shop online etc without trying on every single piece :)
omg I understood close to nothing but you're so cute that I had to subscribe
You are too sweet ❤❤❤ Welcome to the channel!
What type of red hair would be better for people that are neutral or with an olive undertone? more reddish or orangish?
I would advise against orange if you have olive skin!! It'd bring out too much yellowness in the skin... of course depends on the person but based on personal experience XD
@@stylerefinement Thank you so much for answering me
Can a bride put silver jewellery on gold colour mix dress??
??
Depends on the dress and jewelry I think!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Yes I don't like high shine gold at all. I don't like shiny fabrics either and I'm sure it's for the same reason.
Some people were commenting how rose gold washes them out and I want to test it on myself to see if I feel the same way, but I haven't owned a single piece of rose gold jewelry for YEARS so I can't even test the theory out 😂
What you described does make sense! Brightness must be such an important factor for you if none of burnished / antique / matte styles seem off!
Funny enough, I’m cool toned but I don’t think rose gold look good on me. Not sure why either.
What's the black metal called ?
Tungsten!
Theres one at the bottom of the ring stack diagram called black something , I can't make out the word. X
I like silver more, that's why it looks better on me. 😆
But, in truth, dark, cool colors look better on me.
❤❤❤
I love how big jewelry looks on other women, but it's too much of an accent for me. I've always been pissed about that and kept looking for a peice that will look good on me. Now I know that it's just not my tipe of jewelry and I might even accept this idea at some point.
I have what you might not have, but you also have what I don't have ❤❤❤
It’s so frustrating to be black and look way better in silver than in gold but everywhere tells me gold is my color…
Rose gold look like copper
I am poor. So silver is the choice 😂
Or gold plated! But go for gold filled since it won't strip/tarnish as much as plated :)
Indian with very green veins and bloodless pale yet wheatish-brown complexion. I look gaudy and cheap in gold. It's only the silver or silver/oxidized jewellery that looks good on me. On the other hand, light colour clothes wash me out.
Comment for the algorithm
❤❤❤
I find the whole subject of colour analysis SO confusing :(
I've never been more confused. 🤔
Help! I'm more confused than ever. She makes it all sound like rocket science, and completely takes the joy out of wearing jewellery.
your videos look smart but every time i click i understand absolutely nothing to be honest
