    Also important to say is what size you can take with you inside the plane. I don't think they will allow more then 50L on board. I go with 45L for 3 Weeks. Don't forget that you also can wash your shirts :D

    This is such a great video with more visual aids for those who can't get the measurements. I wish I saw this before my first travel but I will definitely be buying a small backpack for my future travel. I am thinking 35-40L would be better for me, though that will be a challenge since I over pack sometime! Thank you so much for making this helpful video!

      So glad you found the video helpful! I remember how confused I was the first time I tried to think about pack size in cubic inches. The difference between 2500 and 3100 was really hard to imagine! What size pack did you take on your first trip? The great thing about a smaller pack is you'll be surprised how much you can fit in it (see all the comments here) but also grateful that it helps you not overpack!
      My secret for being able to have more space is nylon expansion. See the first few items here:

      Happy Travels!

      smaller bag will help with self controlling your overpacking addiction.
      smaller bag with extra fabric lines to hold something on exterior can be useful too. Meaning you can take extra bag of stuff on bottom and/or top if backpack capacity is not enough.
      I'm buying 40L with bottom straps for my tent if it doesn't fit.

    I'm a fan of Osprey Hikelite 26 so much so I bought 2 of them. It's made of great lightweight but durable materials, and the fact it has a frame and the mesh backing is leaps and bounds awesome for a pack this size. Let's not forget it comes with load lifters. I use one for my day hike bag holds my essentials and for those just in case moments of ''inconvenient'' Camping (Survival situations for the unprepared) And use the other as my GHB(Get home Bag)

    A good reference point for me is that my carry-on suitcase is 38 l (40×55×20 cm should give 44 l capacity, but those are the *external* measurements including the wheels etc). I also don't look at the listed liter capacity for more than a general idea - as you mention, there's no standardized way to measure bag volumes anyway, so it's often not a very useful metric. I go by the stated dimensions of the bag, because it'll let me know if the bag is around the same size as a carry-on suitcase which in turn gives me a decent enough estimate of the actual capacity of the bag.

    Osprey 30L for all clothing with a 12L personal item pack. We have been through Asia a few times and N Africa. The small pack has stuff I can’t do without: Rx, electronics, paperwork...it never leaves my reach except at overnight accommodations. The 30 L carries enough so that I do laundry every 10-12 days and repeat for as long as your trip is planned. I have schlepped the 30 L through dozens of airports and carried on all flights except small planes with local airlines. I even carried the 30L on Ryanair (although it was very slightly larger than allowance). The 12 L never gets checked, carried by bellman/or anyone or even put in the trunk of a cab.

    40L - 63 shirts... and 46L - 60 shirts. The math doesn't add up.

    • @halftheclothes623
      @halftheclothes623  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      You're right! Check out the description for more on why you see this throughout the backpack industry, but the basic reason is that there is no gold standard or regulating authority for how companies measure capacity.

    • @neolexiousneolexian6079
      @neolexiousneolexian6079 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It doesn't add up, but it does multiply (and exponentiate)... up?
      On average, the people who buy 46L backpacks tend to be built bigger and wear bigger shirts than the people who buy 40L backpacks, so you can fit slightly fewer shirts in the 46L backpack even though it's technically bigger than the 40L one? This is also true for people who buy 20L to 40L backpacks, but in that range, the backpack capacity still increases more quickly than shirt size. The trend reverses at around 41L, beyond which point the area-cubed growth of shirt volume quickly outstrips the linear growth of backpack capacity. At 100L, you can only fit five or six shirts into a single backpack on average, and above 160L, you actually need to wear two backpacks (one in front and one behind) in order to carry even a single one of your massive shirts around.

    This video guide is so cool! I have been using the Porter 46 for a few years and I'm a small person and have always felt that it's way too big for even my 2-week traveling needs. I'm going to reduce to 30. This year I am indeed going to a chilly location, but not enough to require winter gear, just a lightweight jacket, so I can do it. Like she said, if you need winter gear maybe a little bit larger one. lol one time I used the 46 for a tropical weekend destination wedding and I stuffed everything you could think of bringing in there and still had some room left over.

    I know that 55-65l is the right size for me but I still haven't found the perfectly designed backpack for my needs. A must have is generous side pockets (more boxy shape) as I like to store my jetboil stove in there. So many packs these days seem to sacrifice function in favour of form. Best I have seen is the Wisport Reindeer 55 which would be near perfect but at 2.3kg is way too heavy.

    Great, uncomplicated video, thanks. currently going through my midlife crisis and have booked a 17 day trip to go to some remote(ish) thai islands without electricity, so will need to pack extras like solar chargers, as well as go pro, camera, book etc (and maybe mask/fins- am I highlighting my lack of experience??) . Spent ages looking at backpacks, and having watched your video have come to the conclusion that my wife and I should get away with a 40L rucksack each. We will see! Thanks again.

      So glad the video was useful! From 8 years of nearly non-stop travel, I've learned the less you pack, the more space there is for learning and opportunities you can never dream of or anticipate. I hope you have a great trip and it's everything you need!

      @@halftheclothes623 Thanks, its funny how you can research and research only to come across such a simple thing as your video, and it makes such complete sense :-).
      I take my hat off to you - 8 years of travel!!! Good for you. I
      'll make a point of looking forward to enjoying whatever happens on this trip and my plan is to buy a better rucksack next year and be that weird 50 year old travelling remote areas (whilst they still exist). Thanks again, and if you take requests, I would love to see a video of what, and how, you pack for various trips.

    The large bags being cumbersome is such a true fact. Less is clearly more in terms of moving around as well as from a tactical sense. This is especially important if you are in another county, for example a climate you are not used to and note a type of disaster (Earthquake, Tsunami, Wild Fire ect.) and need to get away to safe ground quickly. Best to stick with 40's or less and the 46LR would be a concern for short people, such as myself. xD

      If you can get the airlines to stop changing their rules every time they get an opportunity to make a bit more money, I'll do it! ;)

    Lovely video! I can never be as organized as you are. I have a tendency to overpack. :D

      I struggle not to overpack, too, believe it or not! I'm packing this morning for a trip to Alaska, backpacking + farming. And I've got the tropics on the horizon... hard to think through ever-changing scenarios, temperatures, activities, and to try and predict what I'll need. I watched a cool video about outdoor backpacking where the guy being interviewed for hiking 30,000+ miles said, "People pack their fears." It's totally true! Hard not to, hey :)

    Best video about the bag volume representation... Please make more videos. Well I just bought a 70L Quechua yesterday, I wish I saw this video before buying, well what size do you recommend for me for a 10 to 12 days travel and I'm 6 feet tall.

    • @halftheclothes623
      @halftheclothes623  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I recommend maxing out at 55L - depends, of course, where you're traveling. But most locations/gear requirements will definitely fit in 55L!

    Exceptionally helpful. I was thinking the Porter 46, but now I'm leaning towards the Porter 30. I do have a question about sturdiness. Whatever pack I get, it will be my carry-on bag that I'll fill with my camera/computer gear - at least 1 full size DSLR, 2-3 lens, multiple batteries, 1-2 tablets and maybe a 17" laptop. I don't know a weight, but it is heavy. I'm pretty sure it will all fit in the 30 and for sure the 46. My concern is how rugged is the pack. Will the stitching handle the weight or will it start to pull apart as I carry the pack over one shoulder. The heavy use is primarily on the travel days, so walking in airports for long stretches. Once we get to our destination, the bulk of the gear stays at home.

      Osprey has a great reputation for holding together well, and they have a lifetime guarantee. You're smart to consider it, though! I think the 30L could be a bit of a stretch with all the electronics you mention, depending on where you're traveling. Or maybe you were saying you'll just use that bag for your electronics? In which case 30L would be heaps, hey.
      Check out this guy's packing list - he's tech heavy but manages with a small bag:

    I watched a lot of videos on TH-cam about packing and bags. This was the most helpful one. So glad I watched this before buying a bagpack. I was confused between osprey 40L and the new Lumina 60L. I’m confused with the size because I once carried 70L which was too big but if I went out to live in the wilderness I would need everything from sleeping bag to tent. Not sure if I can pack those 2 and my clothes all together in 40L. Thank you for such an informative video! Will you be making more ?

      Aww... Rose - this is the best comment ever and makes all those video-making hours worth it. So glad you found it helpful! I'll make more videos someday. I just started a podcast, so I'm spending most of my time on that right now (it's to help newbie content creators - ticket2blog). Happy travels!

      Rose Reema I am no skinny minny and I fit all I need in 30 liters. Quilt, tent, pad, cook system, food, water, clothes, emergency kit, toiletries, 1st aid etc. The less volume and weight I carry means a smaller pack. My back is thrilled, I get to camp sooner, have time to explore instead of set up tent, make dinner, collapse in bed from too much stuff. Always always get your pack last. Get gear 1st to determine what size pack. If you get pack 1st, you will fill a too big pack. Less is bettet.

      Amen! Sometimes it's very lucky to be small. I traveled with a huge man for two years and his bag had to be so much bigger, even with the same stuff!
