3 or 4 wks ago, I stumbled upon your video, watched it, and got inspired. I saw an onion bulb in my kitchen and tried to plant it. On our nexr trip to the grocery, I was already looking for seeds I can plant in containers. It started with one pot, now I have more than 20 pots and a seed tray. Thank you for the knowledge and inspiration.😊😊😊

Hollis, just watching your video again on the squash and just wanted to share a recipe we use for the squash. Take 1 yellow squash and 1 zucchini squash each at least 6-inches long and slice it so the slices are at least 1/4-inch thick then place them in a bowl with a lid and set aside.
In another large bowl that has a lid, add one onion that has been peeled and cut in half around the onion making two thick slices. Separate the middle section from the larger outer rings then cut the outer ring sections into quarter sections and the middle sections in half, place in the bowl. Take 1 red, 1 orange, and 1 yellow bell pepper and cut the tops off then cut down the indented area down the side of the pepper where the seeds are held and remove the seeds. Now cut each pepper section in half across the pepper and add them to the bowl.
In a small bowl mix 2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil, 1/2 cup Soy Sauce, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, and any other spices you might like. My additional spices are 1/2 teaspoon Creole seasoning, 1/2 teaspoon Onion Powder and 1/4 teaspoon Garlic Powder. Mixing thoroughly then pour half the mixture over the onion and pepper mixture and half over the squash mixture then cover and shake both bowls to coat the vegetables. Let set for 15 minutes then shake again and turn the containers upside down for another 15 minutes. After the mixture has set for the 30 minutes you need to pour the juice off the onion and pepper mixture but retain the juice.
Pour enough juice into a heated wok or large pan to cover the bottom then add the onion and pepper mixture and cook over medium heat for about 7 or 8 minutes adding more liquid, if needed, to keep the vegetables from sticking or turning brown. Now add the squash mixture to the pan along with enough liquid to allow the vegetables to cook but not stick or brown. The dish is done when the squash are tender crisp. NOTE: I cook the vegetable in two stages because it takes the onions and peppers longer to cook and cooking everything at one time causes the squash to become mushy. We enjoy this recipe when we cook steaks on the grill and this recipe was a concoction made up by my husband.

Yep, makes a great bait and fertilizer. I have caught coolers full of snapper blues down here and used it for fertilizer too. I save all my fish heads and guts for the garden. One year I ran out of fish and had four more cauliflower to plant so I planted them with no fish. I figured there would only be a slight difference compared to the ones with fish in the hole. When the plants started growing I was amazed!! It wasn't just a slight difference, it was a drastic difference in overall size of plant, color and yield. I am convinced it is the way to go. I use it as much as possible. Have a blessed day y'all.

Please teach me how to grow Ruby red, tangy ,yummy ,rich tomatoes in Savannah ga in this humid heat. I tried 4 yrs straight and failed. The pink ones sold in grocery stores just don't taste good at all.hubby loves B L T sandwiches. I'm from the mountains of North Georgia where all that red clay is. Is the red clay soil what makes those tomatoes I feel up on taste so good ?? Or is it something else the tomatoes need added to the soil to get that rich acid flavor ? Tangy tomatoes w acidy are the best !! Yum.Give God all the glory !

Superb. I am testing out squash again this year after giving up last year. I got discouraged because every year my vines were destroyed by the Squash vine borer. It is frustrating when you see something that huge and beautiful only for something the size of a maggot destroy the plant. Do you have any tips for this? I have seen anything from wrapping the base in aluminum foil to spraying the base. I am going to try Seven dust around the base only (not the flowers or the entire plant) and watch for eggs around it. I put some orange marigolds around them. I put a lot of yellow things on the other side of my house since apparently the are attracted to the color yellow. Happy gardening!

The male flowers from the squash is edible so you can Harvest them and hang them up to dry and core cook them right away but you can use them all year around if you dry them all you have to do is hang them up open them up clean them up take the inside middle part of it and then hang up the yellow part and you've got food for the winter if you want something to taste like yellow squash and in our country we are very blessed cuz we can always find yellow squash somewhere but other countries are not as fortunate and that's how I learn by watching those other countries as well and how they survive so you had a lot of your email flowers there that you could have Harvest and the tips of the plant as well is edible the fresh new tips and soups and fried foods I'm just about anything salad all right God bless to you and your lovely wife

      1) I only water when plants actually need water by checking soil 9" below surface for moisture.
2). Nothing more than the fish. I started using fish several years ago, the results are very good.
If your plants are thriving, don't fertilize. You may push lead growth and stop the blooming. The old saying. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". LOL 😀😀

All three of my squash and zuccs died from squash borers, but I had some back up plants since it was my first time. How do you keep them away?

I only had problems with them a few years ago. I covered the plants with burlap frames until they started showing blooms. Then I removed the frames. Haven't had problems with them since. If you check out our Facebook page you can see a picture of the frames, you may have to scroll down a ways.

I don’t use fish in containers. I recommend using Bone Meal and Blood Meal when planting . You can use fish emulsion after 4 weeks

Thank you so much for your videos I just bumped into again I bumped into you a while back that I lost the feed and couldn't remember who you are LOL so I am so ecstatic to find you again this time I locked you in LoL. May I ask you a question what kind of line do you have a specific brand name that I can look up and perhaps order online? That is awesome with the fish I am definitely going to try that with all my squash plants this year. This year on planting crooked neck squash, zucchini squash, white scallop squash,

Welcome back Jessica. I’m sorry you lost us on your feed. If you don’t view any of our videos in a 3 week period, TH-cam will stop notifications of our videos to you and stop recommending our videos on your feed. In some cases they will actually unsubscribe you from our channel.
The lime I use is Garden Lime (Pulverized Dolomitic Limestone). You can get it at LOWES or any retail garden center. Best of luck to you with your squash this year. BTW, you may be unaware that we recently released a new updated video on growing squash. Let me get you a link since you have been out of touch with our channel:

Just about sums it all up! I'm overweight and need exercise, let's mechanically till,on top of that, I just can't help myself when fishing and take too many. But it's OK, I can say a few prayers and feel better.

I've been pulling off a male flower, carefully peel the orange flower off, and use the (q tip) provided and brush it onto the center of the female flowers. Marvin Gaye music optional

We have an 8 x 16 foot raised garden. When I planted 3 zucchini & 3 cantaloupe, which all but covered the entire bed. your plants stayed tight & compact. Why the drastic differene? Any ideas?

    • @HollisNancysHomestead
      @HollisNancysHomestead  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Nancy here - Hollis don't put anything so far in the garden that is runners like cantaloupe (he puts them on trellis or bed by themselves). Also zucchini is heavy producer and large we only had 1. Your thumb is getting greener. Have fun

So you like the yellow neck variety and plant three plants. Nancy likes zucchini and you plant one. Sounds kinda uneven.
