They lost two starting pitchers. They do have Strider coming back, but they have no idea how effective he’ll be. If he’s lost velocity, he won’t be the same Strider. They need a starting pitcher. Remember last year how making the playoffs came down to one game? They’ll be missing two all stars in Strider and Acuna at the beginning of the season, and we don’t know how close either will be in performance when they get back. Assuming the offense will be back to 2023 levels simply because the calendar changed and we get one player back with now two ACL repairs is risky. FWIW, I’ve also had two ACL repairs and you do lose something. It’s not all physical either. Every time I do anything sporty, the ACL tears are on my mind.
Well the good thing is he never had Tommy John, so they never had to do a ligament reconstruction, in fact Strider said himself that his ligament was perfectly healthy and wasn't even torn at all, and that it was a quasi ligament they used to help support his actual ligament ended up calcifying, which was causing irritation, to which they removed that and put a brace instead. So his ligament was completely good and untouched, thus there should be an even less reason to think there should be a loss of velocity, or even an extended amount of time to regain his past effectiveness. It's the same surgery Shohei Ohtani had a year ago, which cause him no problems this year, but unlike Ohtani who had a UCL tear in his right elbow, Strider didn't have a tear in his, and he stated they pretty much expected him to be back at the 12 month mark, which is April 13th, but could be back potentially sooner.
Once I knew Liberty was separating themselves from Braves Holdings stock and Terry McGuirk was having sole decision making, the payroll was going to start coming down. Behold, it is now happening.
@@Ewe-pt1jw The whole "the payroll was going to start coming down. Behold, it is now happening." wasn't what you were claiming before, you were claiming before it was going up. lol
@@Ewe-pt1jw Well you did state this as well, "Terry McGurik is back in power guys. We are back to the Time Warner days.", and back in the early 2000's and into the 1990's, the Braves constantly were in the top 5 in payroll, as high as 3rd in payroll multiple times during the Time Warner days.
Sorry but at this point I’m pretty ready to call 2025 a wash. The front office has clearly not shown a willingness to spend. Braves rank 2nd highest in extensions, but those $43m extensions are between 2 players in Aaron Bummer and Lopez. I’m sorry but that much money for a replaceable lefty bullpen arm and Lopez (who you just don’t know what you’re getting from him) doesn’t seem wise to me. It’s clear the Braves think Lopez can be your game 3 starter but I just don’t think we can rely on him all year long + postseason
Bummer is not a "replaceable lefty bullpen arm." He tied for 7th in fWAR among all lefty relievers in baseball last season and tied for 6th in fWAR among lefty relievers across the past two years. He's quite good. On Lopez, he's on a VERY cheap deal for what he was last season. Is there some potential volatility there? Sure, but there's no argument he's overpaid.
This guy is crazy. I'm glad Fried got paid, but that would have been an awful mistake for the braves to match. No one that follows the braves wants that kind of money and years going to a pitcher -- we know we don't have infinite money. We have to be smart.
Again, that’s not what was said. At no point did any of the 3 people on the podcast say the Braves should’ve given Fried $200 million. In fact, the opposite was said. We discussed his extension talks from previous years. Nothing about matching or beating the Yankee deal.

Great discussion. Charlie Morton was truly beloved in that clubhouse
Yes options for starters but none of them can cover the 340 innings that Max and Charlie had.
Heck Spencer Schwellenbach pitched more innings than Morton did last year.
What about Verlander or Scherzer on a cheap one year contract if the Braves don’t get Monty?
we've mentioned them as options, think they are quite a bit less intriguing at this point but could provide depth

FWIW we’ve been saying they need a starter for months.
@@HammerTerritoryMy boy Ian Anderson will hopefully be effective!!!!!!!!!!🎉
I’d imagine Strider would have a similar road as Walker Bhueler this yr. Might be rough in the beginning but turn it around sooner than later.

That's not what you stated before.

@@Ewe-pt1jw The whole "the payroll was going to start coming down. Behold, it is now happening." wasn't what you were claiming before, you were claiming before it was going up. lol

Tanner Scott has been linked to the Braves way too much this winter to be just speculation.
The lineup looks really weak once you get to bottom 3-4 guys. We need a left fielder! I still have faith in AA but damn……….
Dream pitching scenario is signing Hoffman to start and Scott . Trade for outfielder.
What outfielder in trade?
@ if they get those two pitchers probably not aiming too high for outfielder. Idk AA can find someone .
@@chrisbirdsall3285Profar would be nice. Wouldn’t cost a ton.

No one on the episode said the Braves should’ve given Fried the deal he got.

@@HammerTerritory I posted the timestamp. I don't know what else to say. Have a good day.
In which we talked about wishing the Braves would spend more? lol listen to the conversation. Your timestamp doesn’t say what you’re saying it does
As a fan it seems nothing going on and alot of talk about nothing
Spending a lot of on the bullpen is dumb. Rather get a quality SP or LF
BP is absolutely necessary in today’s MLB landscape. SP going 6+ is a rarity nowadays.
@ you can get quality RP for the cheap.
Brad u ramble too much about nothing!
interesting time to say this when i (brad) almost certainly talked for a lower percentage of this episode than on any episode lol
Brah go somewhere else. Brad and Scott are the best Braves podcast on the internet
Alex has destroyed thier title window toscano is nuts braves will stink no playoffs
