  • Thanks to NBC’s American Auto for sponsoring today’s video. Check out the first two episodes of the all-new comedy here pck-nbcapp.co/american-auto and watch the premiere on NBC January 4 at 8/7c.
    Mickey Thompson shaped American motorsports more than any other figure, and he didn’t deserve to die. But he was murdered in cold blood in his driveway. You probably know Mickey from his tires, but there was much more to him than a name on a sidewall. He was a drag racer, a land speed record holder, an inventor, and so much more. Who killed Mickey Thompson, and why? Join host James Pumphrey for a deep dive into this racing icon, and a look at the mysterious murder that brought his life to a tragic end.

      @@SweatyFatGuy Yeah thats pretty insane, If i remember correctly the land speed record for nonturbine engined cars uses his first landspeed powertrain combo two boosted 426 Chrysler Hemis except i believe they were twin turbocharged instead of supercharged. The 426 elephant really is the best v8 engine ever built but that pontiac engine with hemi heads sounds awesome too. Theres another engine designer/land speed record guy i forget his name but hes on youtube and hes like 82 years old but hes designed his own 4, 6, 8, v12, and v16 engines, the v12 makes over 1000hp naturally aspirated. Hes also made dual overhead cam small block chevys and has made an overhead cam ford flathead, the guy is genius and cut from the same cloth as Micky Thompson except hes alot more hospitable without the ego lol. You can find him by searching "Sheet metal engine"

    • @SweatyFatGuy
      @SweatyFatGuy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Lotek117 The piston driven LSR record is held by Danny Thompson... yes with twin 426 style hemis. Technology has come a long way from 1960. The Pontiac had hemi killing heads in 1962, but they only built one set of those and they went on McKeller's 421. It was a set of SOHC heads. The RA V was a serious piece as well, the valve layout of the FE Ford, but with ports rivaling the hemi. Easy 800hp on a 428 or 455. A 455 with RA IV heads and cam is a serious piece.
      Its not that they could not come up with something, its that they were not allowed to use it by GM. When Pontiac was 2# in sales only behind chevy with all the taxis, fleet vehicles and barely adequate daily drivers chevy sells, because Pontiac was the performance division, GM decided to hold them back.
      Pontiac we not allowed under the table things like the copo, you could not get a 428 or 455 in an A or F body until 1970, when everything weighed enough to slow them down, and then only low compression round ports. GM really hated it when Pontiac would stomp a chevy, particularly corvettes.
      If they had been turned loose like the Dodge boys were, it would be a completely different performance world today.
      I am kinda thinkin I need one of those new truck hemis in my 70 Cuda... for science of course.

    Interesting story about Mickey and Mike - and I actually hung out with both of them over the years at various times back in the day. I even visited both their homes - and the story about Mike's home being equipped with an indoor waterfall is true, because I was there. I even visited Mickey's house, which had an enormous two-story garage where he kept all - or almost all - of his race cars, which was really impressive. I lived about five miles away from Mickey's place at the time, and I'm totally familiar with the layout of the street and everything, including his next door neighbor who owned emus that always made noises anytime you got close to the property. That said, your video gets a bunch of stuff wrong or left out overall, but this doesn't let either Mike or Mickey off the hook in their respective ways. Especially Mike. Most what's wrong aren't necessarily terrible sins or deal-breakers, but it does pay to be right, especially when it comes to things like this. I know it's a video and there's only so much you can do, so there's that, I guess.

    I got to know Thompsons sister. I worked at a local moving company and moved her into a more secure house. She was busy with trying to get her brothers former business partner extradited back to California.
    I found a loaded gun in every room. She was shooting with the o.c. sherrifs. If the hit men tried to kill her. They were about to retire permanently. His sister wasn't going to take shit from anyone who was getting in the way of putting the killer in prison or grave. I wouldn't want her upset at me.

      I never got the chance to meet Mickey's sister Colleen, but she was in the news a lot after the murders. My ex was so upset about the murders that she told me to not attend the funeral, so I didn't. I don't think Mike went to Mickey's funeral, but he was on TV almost immediately saying how much he was in fear of his own life - and then he vanished. Mike was a bad drama queen, but he could always find his balls when he needed them most.

      Don Garlitz isn't just a drag racing hero, but the guy's a saint. I met him once, and he was as gracious as anybody could be. Once upon a time, they were going to make a big-time Hollywood movie about Don, after the success of Heart Like a Wheel which was about Shirley Muldowney. Don't know why that never happened, but Hollywood is a crazy business.

    The first fatality in organized drag racing occurred when a slingshot dragsters rear end exploded and drove the ring gear through the drivers body. After that NHRA changed the tech rules.
    We all knew it was a "hit" when it happened and we knew who was responsible for the flashy murders.
