- Here are some suggestions to think about when considering a move to South Central Alaska. Please feel free to leave a comment if you also have some tips and tricks. What have you learned since living in Alaska?
Edit: I miss spoke when I mentioned 9 month of snow. Where I’m located we can get snow as early as October and can have snow on the ground as late as May, so depending on the year it’s more like 7 months.. sorry about that guys..
Another consideration about living on a hill is that if you are at the top of it when it ices. Then you may have a slippery drive or walk down. If you do slide down, you may not be able to return home.
I love your videos so much!!!! My husband and I are moving to Alaska in a couple weeks for a job offer for him. We're coming from Enterprise, AL (we're from Panama City, FL but moved to Enterprise a few months after the hurricane because our home was riddled with mold and water damage among other problems the storm caused). I was wondering if you could do a video on tips for driving in snow and on icy roads? We drive in pretty extreme rain down here but from what I've heard, snow and icy roads are much harder to navigate. I see you haven't posted a video in a while, so I hope to hear from you and thank you so much for all of your videos, they're very informative!!!! Much love!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I'm AK born & bred. Besides the Vitamin D supplement I've never needed to worry about any of these issues & I lived at least 1/3 of my childhood in the Mat-Su Valley. I've lived in other places like Washington state, Oregon, Minnesota, Pennsylvania (though I've spent most of my life in AK) & don't really see any of these issues as being way worse in Alaska than in any other state with snowy winters.
Also there are NOT 9 months of winter here. That's absurd!

During winter time, one commandment that should be followed is :” Val shall not wear leather soles upon thy feet during winters” always have your clothes in layers. My family and I moved up here from Northern California back in 86 the first winter was a bear! Live and learn.
Yes definitely have two sources of heat. After that earthquake in 1964, we had to heat with the stove(not the safest) because the electricity was out for several hours.

I’m 15 almost 16. I really want to move to Alaska. Anchorage is where I plan to stay. I live in SC right now but at least I won’t have to deal with hurricanes. Also I want to see the recreational marijuana.

Great information. I read a few articles regarding the high violent crime rate in Alaska which was explained in further reading to a few things I wouldn't have thought of. Given that and the day night and cold well, leaves me out of any possibility of ever calling Alaska home. I know it's beautiful and maybe one day I will visit but definitely not for me. I would suggest anyone considering a move to Alaska to do some real research.
Do you know from experience that parking at the bottom of your driveway and walking back and forth everyday will make you disgruntled? ;). Hey, at least your in Wasilla, its even worse in Eagle River! If you've ever driven from Palmer/Wasilla to Anchorage on the first snow of the year, you would know that many of the ditch crashes are on the Glenn passing ER headed South to the city haha. wow that much needed that's not to hard to get and plan ahead true very true. I use to heat my home before with gas stove it really works, thank you for explaining that it really helps now here is a question what about blankets and warm wear what do you recommend I know many should bring blankets if they move to Alaska, and plenty of warm wear and boots too what do you recommend to wear or to keep warm in car or anything???

that is very rare in south central alaska i have lived here all of my life. you have sun light during the day but sometimes it doesnt go over the mountains where i live in sutton alaska.

John King I live in Fairbanks and even around the solstice you still get daylight. And winter is only like October-April. There’s no “nine months of winter” or whatever, especially in Wasilla. This lady made it sound a lot worse than it actually is
While I have not lived in Alaska yet, it does get day there in the winter, I'll be it for only 2-3 hours but still

Why is it so hard to find a video talking about the economy cost of living and available conveniences live high speed internet and others one might have in a main land city I've thought about moving but the uncertainty of how living financially and not knowing if the things I'm use to such as a Gamestop close but walmart on every corner and fast internet cause me to worry that I might be unhappy due to money and my wife might be unhappy because she might not be able to spend 8 plus hours on Facebook and watching cat videos
why are you moving to Alaska when you want to use wifi and play video games?

I'm moving to Nome Alaska (maybe unalakleet, aniak, or bethel), in about a month or so - Aug/Sept/Oct 17. With no job, no place to live, no car. I'm going with about 10K. My plan is to stay at airbnb for a month, that's $1800. Get a rental car the last 2 weeks to learn my way around & find a job & an apartment. I've already looked into apts & jobs online, but I'm going completely blind! I really don't know what to expect or how I'm gonna live? But I'm gonna go. Wish me luck! 😓

OMGosh I totally love your video!!!! I am BEYOND critical and I have to say you had me cracking up!!! I'm currently a foster parent and I'm looking to move to the Talkeetna area in the next 3 years (one of my foster kids is dead set on moving with me and I had to show her your video) The vitamin D was a HUGE help for us as depression is an issue for not only my bio daughter but also my foster kiddo so THANK YOU!!! You do not have the annoying voice that most people on here have and I have to say you were just beyond enjoyable to watch I may just have to subscribe lol

The Anchorage bowl DOES NOT have snow coverage 9 months out the year.

Snowfall where I live, begins typically in the month of October and drys up ehhh... sometime towards the middle to the end of April depending on the year and the winter. So 6-7 months. This year we are finally above average snow fall! So weird to be outside, in a T-shirt, traipsing through the snow in 50 degree weather, like today! Again thank you- Happy Hunting...

Besides the day and night issues, this doesn't sound any different than advice you would give someone when moving to Wisconsin.

Hi there young Missy. In your opening shot there, I see Pioneer peak and in my younger days, about 30 years ago I and four others made it to the top. Never again. Also, off to your right out of the foto, is my favorite gas station. Those folks have always been nice to me. I'm a 50+ year resident of Alaska. Thanks for the video. I have been in all three villages you mentioned, and I would pick Unalakleet. Pronounced locally as unakleet.
Are campgrounds readily available? How much per night? I would like to go there just to fish chinook.

Go stay there a month in the winter before you make the move. You probably will not want to move there. Just like I tell people that want to move to Phoenix, go for a few weeks in August when the temps are in the 110 degree range for the high and 90 for the low.

I think about having a place to stay in Anchorage where I can go back and forth from California to Alaska. I would love to see the Northern lights as well as feel a massive earthquake. I would of course want to be with a big group of people when visiting the wilderness because of all the bears. I really love to see the foxes.

Great advice, especially about not living on a hill! (Same applies to living in Russia -- except over there it's even worse, because in Russia only mountaineers have ever heard of cleats or crampons, all the other mere mortals just have to deal with ice as best they can!)
OK. I agree with you on about 85%. However you are supporting a popular myth and it has always irritated me when I here people in South Central say we have snownine months a year. I was born in Anchorage when Alaska was a territory and the Parks Highway hadn't been thought of. Hardly anyone lived in Hill Top because there were few passable roads, and Tudor road was WAY out of town. In other words, a long time ago and way before the majority of residents were there. Once in a while it would give us a sprinkling of snow in early May and snow drifts in full shade may still be there if the rain hasn't melted it. Quite often there is snow on Halloween. But, usually all snow is gone by May 1st and it doesn't show up in the town's and lowlands until the middle of October. You really can not count the mountain sides. You can safely say that most years we have six to seven months of winter, and five to six months of springsummerfall. 😀
The lighting situation in Rural Alaska, all of it sounds like most of Missouri... Go into the Missouri Ozark Mountains during winter... no snow, no light, only twisting HW roads with deer, fox, wild boars running in front of your car.
Get studded snow tires, you can go up any hill with a 4wd. I would also think having a month or so of back up food in case of a blizzard/emergency. A gas powered generator for those power outages. Definitely a hand gun with ammo. During the winter, never let your gas tank in your vehicle get below half full.

Good advice for the mountains of the American West as well. I've got a subdivision of 11 homes above me and most of them have to walk up and down the hill for about 4 months out of the year.

What about auto repair shops? Are they abundant or maybe only one within x amount of miles? Are they geared towards foreign or domestic?

Grew up part of my life in Fairbanks, military family : } So we moved allot. I got married, we lived in Idaho for some time, then moved back up to Alaska many years ago.

I was thinking about moving to alaska, how many months is it summer?
There are not 9 months of winter in South Central Alaska. We usually start to get Spring-like weather in mid April & it keeps getting warmer, usually not needing jackets by early-mid May, peaking in June & July, and starts to cool down in August. Winters for the past decade have been mild temperature wise, not getting really cold until November and only dipping below 0°F about a half dozen times a winter.

The living on a hill thing isn’t that bad. Unless it’s a steep hill it’ll be just fine. We have a Subaru cross trek and it does just fine
