Nice design, the inductor both acts as ripple filter, and in addition drive for the power stage rises with load, exactly as needed to compensate for the higher current needed to drive the power transistor, but also lowering the voltage applied to collector under full load, lowering dissipation. Will mean better regulation, with a good idea to look at capacitor bank voltage with current, as this was obviously optimised with inductor and transformer selection to be best at 12V output. Likely other voltages they used different inductor and transformer values to do the same.

YES exactly it is not normal to see a linear 12V supply perform as good as 60% efficiency at full load, so that inductor is clearly a good thing, yes it solves two problems, charge the caps in a more smooth way over more time = much better

Nice video Thomas, the metal tubes you mentioned are called ferrules, they are available with or without the colored plastic insulators, the color actually indicate what size of wire it fits to. It’s good that you mention never to use solder instead. Is that a danish power cord you are using? I think I recognized the plug😊

You are not right, the color is divided according to the cross-section only in the basic series, but I personally have the same cross-sections with different colors, so in the extended series you can distinguish the circuits by color, I do not know if this also applies to tubes with rectangular plastic that are intended for two conductors at the same time,i I only have the basic series with them.
      Nice day 🙂 Tom

@@Edisson. colors are clearly a size thing, but it is not some sort of world wide standard between all brands, so always remember to order them to the size you need, dont thrust only the color :-)

YES that cable is a local type, even between the nearest contries here, we cant agree on something as simple as mains power connectors,
it is important to mention NOT to tin wires you want to screw terminal !! they will get loose is tinned.

Hi Thomas, Oltronix are great sources, I had an adjustable one - it was taken away involuntarily - I really liked the gauge, a narrow vertical bar and one needle on each side (V and A), too bad (I can't remember but maybe it was a 200 model).
These sleeves are made both with and without insulation, those without insulation are used where there is little space or high temperatures.
Someone wrote here that the color depends on the cross-section of the wire, but that's not quite true - it only applies to the basic series, but I personally have it in a single-wire version (two-wire ones are also made - the plastic is rectangular and the tube has a larger diameter) for example cross-section 2.5 with blue, gray or black, cross-section 1.5 in red and black, cross-section 1 in gray and yellow and that's enough, I won't list all the stocks here 😂 In our country, it is allowed to tin the wires in the terminals where the maximum load is 2A, but wires with a cross-section of 6mm2 used to be tinned - fortunately this is no longer the case.
    Nice day 😁 Tom

a tinned, screwed in multi thread wire, will go loose if you wait enough years, no matter what current it is used for, no matter what is alowed or not, people should stop doing it, and just use those metal tubes = ferrules , you dont need the correct official tool to crimp them.

@@TeardownOZ2CPU You don't have to tell me, I hate tinning wires and I even have several crimping tools, I put tubes or pins all the time.

@@Edisson. by the way, I just got another oltronix powersupply a super nice 3 output variable, so stay tuned :-)

Got a small PSU last weekend, adjustable home made one, 0-12V, for charging batteries. Capacitors in there are from 1957, along with transistors, all germanium, but, after replacing the large diodes masquerading as capacitors, it actually works well. Capacitors into the bin, as they were leaking and rotted out in the rubber bung. Also removed the neon indicator, because it was kind of flapping around in the case. Just have to replace the original power cable, seeing as it makes Chinesium look safe, thin wire, barely even speaker rip cord, likely with only a 50V rating.

5:50 tubes without plastic piece also exist.

I have just found two units of 5V of this brand, scrap or sell?

how about keep for all sorts of cool things ? the only problem is the 5V version is not super usefull today, I also got a few more in different voltages, the 5V types dont really get used to be honest.

Believe me i collect all sorts of items😅, but this is far from usable for me. Trying to sell locally nice cases and also a Ganz voltmeter in the bundle so maybe an enthusiast will be happy. Father in law was specialist in large trafo(ABB) maintenance.

A video every day ... I don't know how you keep up with that. TH-cam likes faces in thumbnails, so I'm curious if that will boost your viewership. Getting featured on hackaday also helps ;)
Any more T&T's of your own builds coming up? I haven't seen a lot of your own home brew clock stuff on here yet ;)

Thanks Guido, not my own idea about the face shown, you are the first to comment on it, so most people maybe dont even notice it, It was a few very hard hints from much more successful youtubers i know :-) they tell me i need to do this , it is a lot extra work since all is done manually :-) lets see if there is any measureable change..
about my own homebrew projects, I did share some of the most interesting things on my webpage, it is webx dot dk
it is not video, but a lot of pictures and explain in text and such, i still have a few of the items, so i could maybe make a few videos,
but i find looking arround inside other peoples designs much more fun :-) at the moment.

@@Sine1040 I am so happy to hear that, the feed back thing is clearly missing on webpages, you spend days taking pictures and writing text about a project, but never hear a thing if anyone ever seen it.. I use my own pages now and then when we sit and jamm electronics somewhere and the topic goes arround some stuff i have tried to do or have solved, so that is kind of my main reason for making the web page to begin with.
