  • This video gives a general overview of my process for creating an accurate and realistic Rainbow Scarab beetle (Phanaeus vindex). I wanted to post this to help illuminate the process for teachers and artists who might be curious as to how CG technology can be used for scientific illustration. I have much more detailed step by step videos on this model available at www.entomologyanimated.com and on our TH-cam channel.

Amazing)))) Very interesting type of 3D art - beetle exploration through 3d modelling it:)

I wonder if Blender can be used for the entire process and some textures to cut the time on sculpting the details. I extremely admire them though, the whole piece is an impressive feat of artistic talent and endurance.

speed was not my goal in this project. I've used blender its a fine piece of software but I prefer Zbrush and Maya.

Really cool footage and interesting stuff. Love the colors and who can resist that adorable shovel face of a Scarab?
Though I think the surface sculpture of the elytra should probably be a little more like a diffusion reaction pattern (look it up), as seen in the photographs. I think using a procedural approach like that could actually be helpful to speed things up, while still producing believable results..

cool idea, I'll see if I can incorporate that technique in my next version. Possibly could generate some alphas in photoshop and use in zbrush or see if i can bring it into noisemaker.

I have used Arnold professionally as well as many other rendering software tools. My current favorite is Redshift.

I like your content, but how can someone like you say that these insects is shaped by evolution processes!! Don't you see all that variety in these insects, and life cycle for each one,
Will you say the same for airplanes or cars?
