Been rocking this album most my life. Damn this album still kicks ass! This has to be my favorite song the album, though. Mostly because of the state of the world and a couple of kids at the time saw what was coming through trends and what media was feeding the public. Crazy stuff.
Went to the ten year anniversary concert for this album, amazing show. I also caught Jeremys pick, i cannot play a devil wears prada song without it lol
One of my favorite songs since high school. Definitely my favorite band too, I was gonna see them at warped tour in VA Beach last summer, I even had tickets, but my ride never showed up........
I think the meaning of this song has (call me crazy) to do with the Vietnam war. starting with "no one stands behind the one they have chosen" I think this is a reference to how America initially backed the Ngo Dinh Diem regime only to allow it to collapse when it needed America's help. later when this is repeated, "nation" is used instead further supporting this claim. "comedy is no excuse for our own blasphemies" could mean that America's poor or 'laughable' performance was not an excuse for their malicious intentions in things such as Operation Rolling Thunder, napalm, or Agent Orange airstrikes. "Mass media/mass pessimism/mass denial" is one of the strongest pieces of evidence to support this, as all have heavy roots in the Vietnam War. The war was the first to disgust the public with the true realities of war through mass media companies like CBS and news anchor Walter Cronkite. This led to mass pessimism towards the war:the anti-interventionist doves. mass denial might have to do with how the US government originally denied any proof that the war was horrible. as such "My television tells me to panic, but I don't think I'll listen" indicates a neutral perspective. "The apathetic force us to persevere fear The apathetic, with their backwards priorities" this part is strong as well, again I think it relates to the government and how they would have us believe the spread of monolithic Soviet communism was a threat to America to justify Vietnamese intervention, which the speaker sees as a stupid "backwards priority". Somewhat out of order, "If only the strongest of stone was not necessary" remarks how America dropped an extremely large amount of bombs on Vietnam, way more than all dropped in WWll. the penultimate quote "We could build a monument for memory" might be a reference to the ViIetnam memorial. Lastly, "Liberation includes a failure Your rebellion is resultless So be angry at yourself If only we did not deserve this" is a final reference to the failure of the America backed Diem government. "If only we do not deserve this" is actually an ironic complaint. America never deserved losing the war as they had vastly superior weaponry. These are just my thoughts and thank you so much reading through the whole thing, I would love to hear what you guys think of this as well!
I think the song is anti socialist/communist based on the lyric "mass media, Mass pessimism, mass denial, my television tells me to panic, but I don't think I'll listen". I say that because stalin and Hitler both played of the poor by spewing negativity in order to gain power.
can't believe I haven't already liked this video. this is my favorite band in the genre and like the only band I listen to in this genre. can't really stand any of the others

IzaacD:D Its neither. But listening to ten percent of a song than ignoring the other 90 percent is confirmation bias. you'd need more evidence.
I honestly think it's about Americans.
