These things really are a labor of love. Working on your own airplane--with proper supervision!--is an excellent way to learn about your bird and build your confidence in its integrity. I know because I do all my own work on my Archer, and I'm very fortunate to work in an outstanding shop with mechanics who get as much of a kick helping me as I get from doing the work,
Excellent video! And I'm very glad to see another Piper owner who is passionate about keeping these airplanes not just flying but also in top-notch condition!

Thank you for this response! So many people want to buy today and keep things "affordable" but haven't developed the ownership mindset. Renting an airplane is a tiny fraction of what it's like to own - maybe a topic I'll put into a video. It absolutely adds to the fun to know exactly what's rattling, and how to fix most of the "normal" things that just wear out, on your own. I'm not about to pay anyone to replace the right NAV light that just burned out on this airplane by the way haha. I think the internet also does a great job of scaring new owners into making irrational decisions about overhauls and TBO, and telling nightmare stories about hangar rash but the more important truth is, relationships plus a little time and education go a long, long way. What's even worse is there's a pool of maintenance professionals who have no practical experience working on the non-standard GA fleet (think a Globe Swift or slightly modified older Piper Cherokee for example). We've got to do what we can to partner with them and keep these things in the air bills be damned. Congrats on being a part of the solution!

This is a wonderfully inspiring presentation. I'm mechanically inclined and have wondered about many of the tasks involved. Your effort to journal these processes are appreciated. As I consider how I'll forward my interests into action, keep the videos coming. It's great to see you making it happen.

The key here is to know and trust a maintenance person and these tasks become only items on a whiteboard - things to be done. The difference between success and failure around airplanes is only measured in money and time. I'll continue to take people like you along my journey and hope one day you do the same!

Nice video you did here. It was a good watch for me as I also have a 71’ arrow. Couple questions, what was the one way bleeder valve you used for the brakes, and where did you get it at, maybe a link! Also, can you give me a little insight on how you changed out the high pressure valve on the landing gear Hydraulic pump, thx, Mike.

Glad this is helpful! Go here a.co/d/3TITMOL or Search Amazon for the "vbaxy Brake Bleeder Hose- One Way Check Valve Tube Bleeding Tool Kit for Motorcycle Clutch". It's currently $9.99.
Is there way for you to send me a direct message on here? I'm pretty new to TH-cam! Otherwise send me a message on the Open.Source.GA Instagram page for a quick discussion of the hydraulic pump.

Lots of hard work went into that. Those repairs will last a long time. What was the final invoice?

I lost track of the exact number and honestly, I don't really want to know! I did have an Excel budget that I was following and adjusting so I'll dig that up. But the interior was roughly $6,500 all-in for cleaning supplies, seats, walls, carpets, new plastics, adhesives, insulation, and paints. Annual parts I'd put it between $4k - $5k USD. Some were necessary, others were "nice to haves" or "while you're in there" like the engine paint, a new audio panel and transponder. I really did do most of the labor myself across 4-6 months but then made various trades for the A&P's specific labor (engineering work, etc.). If I wasn't handy, it would easily have been $10,000 in labor both interior and annual. As long as I have strength, I'll never pay an A&P to open inspection panels...that alone would save hours of labor. I'll do a mini episode on the cost in the future.
