  • A question I receive often is “How many layers of fiberglass do I need for a fiberglass subwoofer box, door pod, a pillar, etc.” Unfortunately there is not a simple answer, but in this first Fabrication Friday video I discuss how we determine what is needed. Using fiberglass to make a custom car audio install can really allow you to make a beautiful build, with the proper understanding of fiberglass and how it is used in a custom car build we can use it to our advantage.

    Mark, great video man. I hope you don't mind me adding a few things. I do lots of fiberglass projects. Sometimes massive builds with lots and lots of power and sometimes 70 and 80 lbs subs. In fiberglass enclosures. I got some coming up soon but video's yet on them. Anyway, I use 3.5 oz matting where ever I can and 1.5 in those hard to get to areas as you said. A few other things. You need to try to do all layers at one time. Don't wait for a layer to harden before you do the second and so on. Also I use 1/4" steel laminated in the layers where you use wooden dowels. This makes the box bullet proof. I just cut the steel into squares and stick them with hot glue as you do the wood dowels. Same method just bigger scale. Just thought your viewers might want to try that. Again not trying to steal your thunder. Just wanted to help.

      @@2ndshiftaudio300 8 yrs later but have you ever tried to use chopped fiberglass. I have access to thousands of pounds of fiberglass but it’s the small chopped pieces, just trying to find out if I could use a lot of that instead of the mats?

    Thanks for the videos, you were one of the references I drew on when building my first fibreglass sub box. It is doing a great job while allowing me to keep most of the trunk space which is far better than needing to shift a big box in and out when you need the space.

    Great video Mark! Thks for saying hello, listening and offering some feedback yesterday @ SEMA; I truly appreciated it.Your advice about keeping the laminated layers of fiberglass in place until they're cured is spot on! This is critical, and it's important to remember that dry isn't quite the same as cured... The latter takes longer and varies according to ambient temperature (the hotter the faster), so it does help getting a heating infrared light bulb and fixture to heat the fiberglass laminate, being careful to monitor its temperature and not pointing the light to plastic trim in the car... Keep the great videos coming up man!

I'm going to be swapping them to Components, however I've heard different opinions on using the 6.5's as apposed to the 6x8's. I know the larger the area the more bass, but won't the 6.5's give a more sharper sound?? thanks, Mark!!

    Hi Mark,I just did my first fiberglass box in the spare tire well.Only the bottom and half of 2 sides are glassed to the sheet metal and there is a lot of curvature.I did 3 layers of 1.5 oz chop strand mat.The area is only 13 inches deep as well.Should this be strong enough or can I strengthen it with some type of epoxy?

  • @atomiccheerio3349
    @atomiccheerio3349 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I only use one layer of mat to make the initial shape. Then I switch to fiberglass cloth for adding layers inside . Cloth is way stronger than mat. Mat for the form, because it forms in really well, and it's good for the top layer for a smooth finish. But cloth (weaved fiberglass) is where the stregth is at.

    Great channel. First time trying this. I just bought a 2019 ram rebel quad cab. I'm gonna build a box under one side of the rear seats with a sundown 10". The sides and top of the box will be in MDF. I'm wanting to do the bottom with fiberglass because of all the waves in the floor. Its roughly a 15"x25" bottom. How much material and resins would you think I would need to buy for that size of a panel? Thanks.

  • @uroslangus5362
    @uroslangus5362 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    you can also use styrodure to add thickness. just cut it into strips of desired dimensions and put them so that the fiberglass mat spirals around them. For example you start by making a base layer of fiberglass mat and then put on a styrodure strip and laminate over it. Then you take another styrodure strip and laminate under it etc. For making custom shapes you can do those with modelling clay and when the clay surface gets semi-dry you paint it with at least 5 coats of plastidip so the moisture doesn't escape the clay and makes it crack. For better release of the fiberglass from the plastidip you can spray it with 4 coats of pva. I reccomend you do 3 layers with fiberglass cloth or maybe even carbon fiber and epoxy resin. Epoxy doesn't warp much and the smoother surface you get with cloth or carbon will spare you some sanding. You can then add layers from the inside for strength because the epoxy resin won't warp your creation.I might be doing a subwoofer enclosure soon and if i do, i'll make a video.Hope this helps or gives new ideas.Cheers ;)

    hey what's going on man I have a question for fiberglass boxes. I want to build a fiberglass box in the rear floor of my 2005 Chrysler town and country. I'm looking to make the front baffles to be flush with the floor that way I can still haul things in my van. I'm going to make sure I have protection grills for my sub. I'm curious what is the best way to start the mdf perimeter ring or baffle board and to make sure there is the best adhesion from fiberglass to mdf. I just am having a hard time coming up with a way to make the ring flush with the floor and how I will make sure the fiberglass connects to the mdf ring secure and the woofer baffles then can be glued and screwed to the ring. thank you

    Just made a contoured enclosure for my bronco. Wood bottom with a cut out and a fiberglass tub going through it. I cant imagine anyone would want to screw the fiberglass part of their enclosure to the wood part. The ester resin bonds it plenty well, right?

  • @nugg3tFTW
    @nugg3tFTW 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    One important detail to keep in mind, if you are laying up one layer then letting it cure before adding more you run a major risk of delamination, separation of the layers. Resin alone has very poor mechanical bonding qualities.

    Is that the way to go really? Or is there some other option im missing?

    you can also make something like an X shaped template, put it where you know you'll have a large flat spot, then mask all over the area. this way when your fiberglass is hardened and you take it all out, you can keep your template and the bends are permanent in the fiberglass. :-)

    First, great video! When I've made fiberglass boxes in the past I usually start with a a wood backing and fleece stretched over a form (e.g., speaker mounting rings spaced out on dowels). How do you calculate the structural value of fleece resined on both sides as compared to 1.5 oz chopped matt? Thx!

    • @CarAudioFabrication
      @CarAudioFabrication  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fleece adds essentially zero strength, you are just using it to capture your shape and then should be applying fiberglass mat on top of that. I try to avoid fleece when I can because it just sucks up a lot of resin for no real strength add. Better to use grill fabric to get shape then add glass to shape it.

    I have a question. Back in 2007 I had a shop build me a box for 2 15" L7s kickers and it was 9 cu.ft. excluding the port and subs displacement that was going into my 04 grand marquis but the box would sound terrible when the trunk was open so I went back and asked them why that was and they said that the way they built the box was so that when the trunk was closed there would be a very small space left in the trunk and that would counter act with the pressure that the subs would not deliver so it was kinda of like an infinite baffle inside a box. Never have I seen such thing. But my question is 1. If my box is less cu.ft. than my subs require can I just make a bigger port to make up for the missing cu.ft.? Basically the opposite of what they did?

      Depends on the resin. If the resin waxes between layers you have to sand

    What about fiberglassing in cold weather? I live in Wisconsin and am in college so I have a month off of school in the winter, can I glass during my break or is that a no no? Thanks and love your videos, always innovating!

      cold weather is actually better to me when glassing b/c it takes longer to dry, so u can fix an imperfection

      +elice05 oh, cool. i plan on using SMD sunflash so wouldn't really have to worry about that but is that the only aspect that the cold affects? other than me freezing my ass off? lol

    Just tape something to the area you're glassing into an X or you can do lines and then lay your glass over that. No need to embed anything in the enclosure, and if you blend the shape it makes it easy to glass over.

    Hey man, I got a question for you actually... I got a SWA-10S4 10" SCV Bassline Alpine subwoofer 4 ohms and I bought it as a package from car toys that came with a Bassworx sw10b 10" sealed 0.54cf enclosure. It literately sounded like shit nor did it bump at all. I grew on ported boxes with old school alpine brands;so I'm raised and familiar with that shit, bumping on old rap like Ice Cube and Tech N9ne (NO NOT THAT NEW SHIT.). I want that type loud and bumping down the street type of sound; so I picked up a 10" Atrend Bbox E10SV single vented box that is Gross Cu. Ft. 1.25 \ Net Cu. Ft. .90 \ (Tuning 39Hz) \Speaker hole cutout 9.12" on Amazon.com. Do you think I should use polyfil in this? I just want my shit to bump without that bullshit or damaging my subwoofer. Oh, Most importantly. My amplifier is a MRV-M250. PLEASE help my dude. I've spent so many countless hours trying to get my shit right and to make it hella lit.

      Hyptonic Promotions .. sounds like you need more amp power or more subwoofers.

    Your correct, and honestly I don't remember resin being that expensive so I really don't know what the #&$^ is going on here within 2022 because I bought 2 clothe bags and 1 small can of resin and seemed way to much money considering the other products haven't increased in price

    I'm a Fiberglass Man, make sure you have Acetone to clean hands and brushes, and, He's right, wood is the best to use, it may delaminate from other things, but it'll stick to wood. By the way, 4 layers of 1.5 oz mat, is perfect. I'm ony box now, and it's stiff as ...... We'll, it's stiff!! Good luck, and, make sure to not over "kick" your resin, and dry up extra wet spots!! Let's get it!!

    You could actually use foam or plastic for this to reduce weight.
