Hi, here are some background context for the song. The song is about the love between Yang Guifei (Noble Consort Yang) and Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty. She was born Yang Yuhuan, guifei is actually the title of the highest rank within the Imperial Harem below the Empress. She is one of the Four Beauties of Ancient China and is also famous for being the subject of the famous Tang Dynasty poem “Song of Everlasting Sorrow” which is also sometimes translated as “Song of Everlasting Regret” by Bai Juyi. Also, this is a link for the translation of the Song of Everlasting Sorrow for anyone who is interested and is also where I got the stanzas and lines; www.musicated.com/syh/TangPoems/EverlastingRegret.htm. REFERENCES FOR THE LYRICS Lyrics: 那一年的华清池旁留下太多愁 That year, too many sorrows were left by the HuaQing Pool. Context: HuaQing Pool, or the HuaQing Hot Springs, are a complex of hot springs at the foot of Mount Li (one of the 3 major peaks of the Qin Mountains). The HuaQing Pool is located approximately 25km east of Xi’an, formerly known as Chang’an, the western capital of the Tang Dynasty. Emperor Xuanzong had the HuaQing Palace built there in 723 and it is famous as the supposed scene of his romance with Yang Guifei as recorded in the Song of Everlasting Regret Lyrics: 金雀钗玉搔头是你给我的礼物 The jade comb with decorative gold sparrow was your gift to me. Context: A reference to a line from the Song of Everlasting Sorrow from the following stanza; "From inside the nine-tier imperial walls dust clouds originated. Thousands of wagons moved southwest as the monarch retreated. When they paraded, the imperial banner waved and led the way. Suddenly the troops halted west of the capital just thirty miles away. All six regiments refused to march, rendering the Emperor powerless. Her execution in front of the steeds was torturous and hopeless. The scatter of her precious jewellery on the ground added to the sorrow. Among them was a green jade comb with a decorative gold sparrow." Although the jewellery is also translated as a "jade comb with kingfisher feathers and decorative gold sparrow". The Song of Rainbow-Feathered Skirt I still perform for you time and again. Context: 霓裳羽衣曲was said to be presented by Yang Jingshu, an envoy in the Western Liang Dynasty in the Kaiyuan Period of the Tang Dynasty. The name was originally 婆罗门曲 but it was changed to this name after being polished and written by Emperor Xuanzong for Taoism. It depicts the immortals of the upper realm and Taoist mythological scenes. This court dance is also referenced in the Song of Everlasting Regret and until now, still considered worthy of being a ‘shining pearl in the history of music and dance’. Jianmen Pass represented your deep yearning for me. Context: Jianmen Pass literally means Sword Gate Pass and is a mountain pass located in Sichuan Province. In relation to the story of Yang Guifei, here is an extract from qinshuroads.org/docs/html/Shu_Roads_Introduction.htm "On the way back from exile in Shu, the Emperor wrote a poem at “Sword Gate Pass” in which he wrote (perhaps in remorse for his failing to be a virtuous Emperor):
“Our tour complete our carriage returns to Sword Gate’s cloud-barred peaks its mile-high screen of folded jade its cinnabar walls breached by heroes our pennants weave through the tapestry of trees ethereal clouds brush past our horses rising to the times depends on virtue how true is this description?”" Lyrics: 马嵬坡下愿为真爱魂断红颜 Under Mawei Slope, I am willing to scatter my soul and beauty. Context: 马嵬坡 Mawei Slope is the supposed site of Yang Guifei’s death and is also where her body was buried. An extract from Song of Everlasting Sorrow; As they returned to the very spot, the Emperor hesitated. Under the Mawei Slope he searched in the mud, But failed to find any trace where she shed her blood. The Emperor and his ministers all wept in a gloomy state. Their horses took them eastwards, back to the capital gate. Lyrics: 谁知吾爱心中寒 Who knows that *my loved heart is freezing? Context: The character 吾 (wú) was first seen in the Bronze inscriptions of the Western Zhou Dynasty. It means “I” and “mine” as the first-person pronoun. Though the “wu” in the Western Zhou inscriptions was mostly used to express “imperial”, that is the righteousness to defend and resist. For example, the Mao Gongding inscription: “Yinai clan can (defend) my[吾] (imperial) king’s body”. In the inscriptions of the Western Zhou Dynasty, "wu" is also used as a person's name, but there is no case for using it as a first-person pronoun. In "The Analects" and later works, the use of "wu" as the first-person pronoun gradually increased. "Wu" as a first-person pronoun is the basic meaning of the word. This word is frequently used in ancient Chinese first-person pronouns, but it was later replaced by "我". "Wu" was only retained as a classical Chinese vocabulary in literature books.
This is one of the best, if not THE best duet I ever heard. Warmest greetings from Serbia to both the Chinese and Kazakh singers. Yes, Dimash is special, but Li certainly held his ground. They complemented each other in a unique and quite amazing way. BRAVO!
Dimash with Sundet , "Tu ma vas detruire" from Notre Dame de Paris, and with Zarina, "A Question of Honor " (with the aria from La Wally, "Ne andro lontano") are also wonderful early Dimash duets.
The first part of the song was impressive- both singers- but the last part was so beautiful how their voices complimented each other- it was so emotional that it made me cry! So lovely! Really enjoyed this song! First time hearing Li YuGang- he has such a nice tone to his voice. Dimash is always stunning- his range is incredible and I like how he can mesh his style with other peoples styles so flawlessly! Bravo!
Hermoso!! Greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷❤
I loved this duet so much...traditional Chinese meets modern opera! Li's voice was so majestic and Dimash was beautiful as always. Thanks for sharing this video!

I am obsessed with this duet. I can't even find the adjectives to describe their talent.
