- The three hundred year period of Jewish history from 150 BCE to 150 CE was characterized by the utter failure of all apocalyptic expectations of the End of the Age arriving. These failed hopes and dreams shape collectively what might be called "The Great Disappointment." This included a variety of apocalyptic movements form the Dead Sea Scroll Community, the John the Baptist and Jesus followers, and a string of failed messiahs who have now faded from history. What happens "when Prophecy fails," history moves along in its usual way with no overthrow of evil or oppression, and a group is left wondering how they could have been so mistaken? The one common element that all forms of ancient Jewish and early Christian apocalypticism share is the utter failure of all predictions, interpretations, and expectations.

Dear Dr Tabor. I was very interested in your mention of the Teacher being termed ‘Yachid’ or Unique/ the Only One. In the Hebrew Scriptures Isaac is called Abraham’s ‘yachid’ son which the LXX translates as ‘monogenes’. I wonder if the author of the gospel of John is appropriating this title from the teacher to Jesus when he twice calls Jesus ‘monogenes’ in the Prologue? The author says the ‘monogenes huios’ ( the correct reading) has ‘explained’ God, which Greek word was used of expounding the underlying meaning of the Hebrew text. Several authors suggest monogenes has a primary meaning of unique/one of a kind, rather then ‘only begotten’. Van Den HEEVER, Gerhard A. (2009) John the Baptist and the Pre-existence of Jesus in the Gospel of John 1:15,27, 30. The University of South Africa
It is certainly redundant to assert that monogenes~ does not mean ‘only begotten’ as many modern translations render it(McHugh 2009: 97-98): LSJ gives as meaning
‘1. the only member of a kin or kind: hence, generally, only, single, pai`~ Hes.Op.376 , Hdt.7.221, cf. Ev.Jo.1.14, Ant.Lib.32.1; of Hecate, Hes. Th.426; and

wherever the LXX translates [Hebrew] (yachid) ‘only son’ as … as Gk. monogenes~ the Vulgate translates unicus.
When in some early Apologists (Aristides, Apology 15.3; Justin, Dialogue 98.5, 105.1, 2) monogenes~ is used of Christ it is in the sense of ‘quite unique, set apart’ (McHugh 2009: 100 - 101). In the Latin Western creed (ca. 200-250) the ilium eius unicum.
The author wants to emphasise that Jesus is the ‘unique son’ and hence has no rival or competitor as a teacher, then their point MAY NOT be that Jesus was ‘begotten’ by God, it is thus POSSIBLE that the author did NOT teach/understand that ‘Jesus was conceived through the holy spirit’, but that his sonship was figurative. Van Den Heever (2009) shows that usage of the idea of ‘unique’ in the Roman world was associated in inscriptions not with just being ‘different from others’ but being outstandingly the best.
‘John’ has several similarities to some Qumran Community ideas and phrases.

The statue of Nebuchadnezer gives the 1st "oracle" of the four beast kingdoms. Josephus tells us the priests and people recognizing Alexander the Great as the one who would conquer Persia, went out to meet him as he approached Jerusalem. They showed him the "oracles" of Daniel, submitted to him, and gave him the prophecy he would conquer Persia as the "notable horned goat". So there were traitors among the Jews who knew another Beast, a 4th Kingdom prince would come and he would change times and laws and would destroy the Temple. Most of the people were deceived by their leaders who claimed to be looking for the Messiah of God but were really planning on assisting the beast to power.

I agree with the interpretation that Daniel 9 and the Sermon on Mark 13, Like 21, and Matthew 24 were referring to the Destruction of Jerusalem and already took place at that time. However, it is understandable that they were expecting the 2nd Coming of the Messiah as they did not have the Book of Revelation yet which was written in the 90-92 AD by Apostle John. I believe it is because of this disappointment of not witnessing the 2nd Coming of the Messiah that to the church of Ephesians it is written that they have lost they first love. Interesting it is also to this church that they have proven those who call themselves Apostles and found them liars, which I believe it is a direct reference to Paul who was rejected according to himself by all the churches of Assia to which Apostle John wrote. It is after having the book of Revelation that it is now more evident Messiah would not come until the final destruction of the Roman Empire and after the final Battle of Armageddon, revelation given in the book of Revelation (I would like to know how the War Scroll do you believe could be related or not with this Final Battle). Just curious on your thoughts about the rapture? Reason I'm asking back in August I had my first and only open vision and it was of the rapture. I wasn't a believer until I experienced this. As I sat at my computer my hands felt tingly as if they were falling asleep. I stopped what I was doing and looked at them for a moment wondering why. As I was about to stand up my vision instantly changed. I was no longer in my body. I was looking at the sky and there was an opening with several men standing looking down. Unfortunately, I didn't recognize them, but they had the typical appearance of what they wore in biblical days. Robes were white just like in the pictures. One I noticed had a white beard. Behind them were thousands of angles ready to barge out at the sound of a trumpet. As the trumpet sounded, I instantly went back into my body and somehow just knew the rapture is coming. At the time I didn't even know what the rapture really was. It didn't last long at all. The feeling of the Holy Spirit that went through me was so incredible. It wasn't the normal feeling it was intense. It brought me to tears and the feeling of peace and love was overwhelming. It was very powerful. I felt I was given a message to warn the world the time is here. My spirit is telling me it's happening any day. I've been studying daily since. My time is now devoted to looking for the Lords return and it's amazing at how many people are having dreams and visions of the rapture lately as well. I tried to make this as short as possible. Anyone got any feedback I'm open to hearing it.

It was actually a pope who said that. Not prophet. And also the pope before the current one retired. Never in the history of popes any pope retired. But the one before francis did retired.
Isaiah 40:3 in hebrew might clear up some confusion in the hebrew. The elect prophets prepared the way for the YHWH (his spirit of Truth). The gospel authors personified the coming of the Spirit of Truth. Also the Anointed one is defined as ALL the elect Sons of God in the OT. The suffering servant is Gods witnesses (plural) Revelation 21:7.
I think the confusion happened because of meanings "lost in translation".

A ruler of the world is not one who plays with thrones and crowns. It is someone who gains superuser access privileges; a software engineer in essence. To understand the mysteries of the words of the prophets, you must see why parables are used. God does not use human language. Images come. Things are not their dictionary definitions. To understand them, absolute faith in God's will is necessary. There should be no fear to protect these transient organic vessels. Simply accept God's will, and be led, but do not transgress against decency. If forced to do what must be done, to achieve ends, one must stand up for the words of the prophets to avoid being misled by darkness. It is an evolution of our interface with the world. But a system of precedent must be recognised to maintain consistency, and to avoid The Beast usurping the process. The engineer's presence may be within the system, but their motivations are outside the system, and aeviternal. All this is irrelevant processes contributing to the evolution of the whole. The future is the goal. The past is a means to an end.
I'm not a mathematician, or a dedicated scholar, but I see Daniel 12:10 comes into play. The wicked continue to be wicked, but the wise will understand. Two divergent paths. Two worlds. One of faith, and one for the wicked. Like The Garden of Earthly Delights, by Bosch who lived through the elevated times during the beginning of the last millennium. This is a multiuser environment. It has never been about systems of human political control. It is about again beginning to understand that all that is here is the body of God, and we are all part of that undying body. The captives are those who cannot see this. They are the blind. Liberty comes in those who awaken to their true nature as parts of the whole. Apokalypsis is only Revelation; information is revealed. At any time, faith must be had that now is the time, because faith that it is now, is what give us that understanding as it shapes our perception, and builds our strength.

Prophecy did not fail. "The Prophecy" is for 120 Jubilees of Adam and also 70 Jubilees of the Real Israelites. The problem is man is not smart enough to understand that while same time YHWH hid it from man! 🤣

I think NT Wright made a good point in terms of apocalypticism in early Christianity when pointing out the heavenly imagery etc is typical prophetic symbolism to showcase how important any specific thing is, like in Isaiah etc. Judgment is not strictly eschatological because in Jewish thought, God judges nations all the time.
This combined with the stories of Christians, following Jesus' instructions, went to the mountains during the destruction of the temple, which is what one could say was really being prophecied, as perhaps indicated by the actions of these Christians. The destruction was given its due worth and importance in significant prophetic language.
We have to remember that apocalyptic doesn't equate to eschatological, but reveals the hidden.

My take goes like this: Paul totally thought he'd see Jesus come back, and he preached that. Then Paul died, so some people concluded Paul probably wasn't 100% accurate about that end of and age stuff.
Then somebody brought out the book of Mark. In chapter 13 Jesus makes it clear that "the end" is about your spiritual transformation, not asteroids and such.
But predicting a physical end of the world is such a good grift that people even cite Mark 13 when they make their bogus claims. Generally, they know what they're doing, and are acting exactly like the scribes in long robes who swallow the property of widows that Jesus condemns in Mark 12, setting up chapter 13. You're not supposed to be like the widow of chapter 12. Pure-hearted though she is, she lacks discernment. Jesus begins his discourse on ch 13 with "Do not be deceived." (like the widow)
When Tabor says that Jesus is just another failed apocalyptic prophet, he's so wrong it's not even funny. The Jesus movement lasted because just as Jesus re-interpreted the concept of Messiah, he taught people a new way to understand the "end."
Paul spread the world in a powerful way, but when this predictions didn't pan out, the Markan tradition (which I assume existed side-by-side with Paul) was there to re-orient Paul's people to a more timeless way of understanding the teachings. If Jesus and/or the authors of Mark had a valid insight, the end you are to prepare for is personal, not global.
I see room for other interpretations, but that pairing of the corrupt scribe and the deceived widow is placed right before the comments on the end times. Mark is no dummy, and the reader is supposed to get it that Jesus is warning his disciples away from deception in ch 13.

@@doloreslehmann8628 OK. This is longish. Hearing and speaking are paired in one of the cures, and you as a reader are supposed to know that when you get to ch 13. How exactly does "When you hear of wars and rumors of wars" connect to getting dragged before Sanhedrin and family members betraying each other? It's because when your perception opens you'll see corruption and be moved to speak and act to correct that. That's what gets you into hot water, and that's when "not one stone will be left upon another." None of the institutions or customs that make up your civilization will be there to defend you or those who speak the truth. And you'll see that.
When you get to that point, "Then you will see the desolating abomination set up where it ought not to be." I know the reference to Daniel and that this is taken as a prediction of the Romans desecrating the Temple in 70 AD, but if this book is timeless, could it also mean something about your perception again? What you will see is the sin or idol that your society as honoring instead of honoring God. Alternatively or simultaneously, you will understand what sin or false idol resides in you in the place that ought to be God's.
"Then those in Judea must flee..." and it'll be really tough etc. That's about you cutting yourself off from the sin or idol that is honored in the place of God.
If you get this far, "Then the sun will be darkened and the moon will lose its brightness" and the stars fall and the powers in heaven are shaken. These represent other sins and idols that start dropping out of your life after you successfully took on the really big one.
"Then they will see..." It's very important right there to understand the meaning of "they." "They" refers only to those who have gone through the ordeal described above. There are warnings against false prophets producing signs and portents and against anyone knowing the day or hour. IT IS A DIFFERENT DAY AND HOUR FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL. IT IS NOT A SHARED EVENT IN TIME AND SPACE. In my humble opinion. Sorry for the caps.
"Then they will see the son of man coming on the clouds with power." It's the culmination of your spiritual growth here on Earth. This can also be taken as the virgin birth of Christ; note that Jesus refers to the "birth pangs" a few verses ago.
That's how I see it. It's a minority position. For kind of desperate reasons, I was reading Mark for myself and by myself as carefully as I could in search of the purported good news of Christianity. I was dreading ch 13 because the end times struck me as a completely useless kind of idea.
But a careful reading of Mark prepares you to be ready for metaphors, and Jesus begins so clearly with a warning against being deceived. The reader is supposed to find the meaning that is not on the surface.
In addition, nobody can even count how many end of the world predictions have come and gone without a physical end of the world.
So I'm pretty comfortable saying that Christianity was distinctive enough and profound enough to survive all this time because Jesus knew how to communicate this point about arriving at spiritual maturity.

I've always wondered how Christianity could have overlooked all those massive comparisons Jesus draws all the time about the Kingdom of God being like a mustard seed, a leavened dough, a sower, field crops, etc., stating clearly that it is not a cataclysmic event at the end of time, but something that grows constantly in our midst. That's the opposite of apocalypticism. And yet, this point of scripture is hardly ever discussed. I think, it's just more comfortable to state "God will do this in his right time", than to accept that you yourself have to put your effort in it and get your hands dirty.

you will most likely hear responses like these:
“I have accepted Jesus into my heart.” Or “I
have made him Lord of my life.” “I’ve been
baptized.” “I said a prayer.” Sounds all good
and churchy don’t it; but it is difficult to de-termine whether or not a person actually
knows the gospel that saves them. These useless phrases don’t describe a thing about what
the gospel is and has left a devastating effect
of people not knowing what it is that they are
saved from nor how they are saved; which
leaves a more serious effect of people questioning their salvation.
Let’s not muddy the simplicity of salvation that is in Christ with vague church
sounding phrases that do not communicate
anything. But rather present God’s word with
clarity and assuredness. So here is the gospel:
plain and simple.
Sin was passed upon all men by one man
Adam, and death is a consequence of this sin
(Rom 5:12). Mankind has an eternal destiny of
condemnation and wrath - Hell - because of
this sin (Rom 6:23). No matter what good
works one might do we are still found sinners
in the sight of our Creator God. And all unrighteousness and those who follow get indignation and wrath. We cannot be found
righteous for by God’s law we are found sinners (Rom 3:19-20). If we have broken even
one law we are found guilty.
It is for this reason of not being able to
create our own righteousness and being born
in a sinful flesh that we need a savior (Titus
3:5). Christ is that Savior, God manifested in
the flesh, sinless, died in our place on a cross
2000 years ago. Taking upon him the wrath
and judgement that was intended for us sinners. And it is through his bloodshed, burial,
and resurrection on our behalf that we are
able to have peace with God and forgiveness
of our sins (1 Cor 15:1-4, Col 3:14). This good
news is unto all but only those that believe in
it are made righteous in Christ (Romans
3:22).
It is then after we have heard this good
news of Christ’s righteousness available to us freely, that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit
and we are now part of Christ’s body the
church (Eph 1:13)
There is nothing that we need to do, no
good works that are required, and no bad
works that can separate us from our new position in Christ (Romans 8:35-39).
Faith and belief in this information from
God’s word is the gospel.
The gospel is not accepting Jesus into your
heart. The gospel is not making him lord of
your life, it is not saying a prayer and it is not
being baptized with water.
So next time someone asks you if you are
saved. Give them the clear assured answer
