    My parents bought me so many toys when I was little (not that they were bad parents, just that they wanted me to be happy at the time). I'm almost 15 now and I want to get rid of most of these material things, though my mother has an attachment from her memories of me being a child. Please pray that the Lord may grant my mother a sense of charity and simplicity..

      I’m so happy simply to learn that a 15 year old was listening to Fr. Ripperger and applying what you learned. Your mother must be a great mom. It’s understandable not wanting to let go of tangible items attached to precious memories. May God bless you and please pray for me, if you read this.

    Many people buy compulsively because they experience pleasure or relief of stress through shopping. However, much of the thrill is in the acquisition, once you own it, the enchantment is often broken. The clutter created by acquiring too many things is also burdensome. When our hearts are attached to our possessions, we don't have much peace. Our Lord gave the perfect example of poverty. The world tries to get us to pursue material goods because that is the agenda of worldliness, love of the things of this world, as if there were no life after this one.

    Fr. Ripperger, I love all of your speeches BUT one line in this one BLOWS MY MIND! Getting upset if someone rolls over your dog?? My animals are a blessing and a privilege to have. Any of them that I have loss, brought heartache to me and my family.
    Your statement doesn’t offend me, It’s just that I’ve never heard someone speak so callus of a pet.
    I hope you continue to share your ministry with us and I thank you for doing so.

      Agreed, I don't think father was blessed with an ability to relate to other living creatures who aren't human. Poor chap, it does show me that Our Lord doesn't give all gifts to even his most inteligent souls. I respect him greatly and his words are gold, but on the love and value of other living creatures and animals/ pets, this dear priest is blind.

      I love my dogs and will be devastated when they depart. I just recently watched Fr. Mike Schmitz’s TH-cam video on pets going to Heaven and it totally made me look at this subject in a new way. I would highly recommend watching it.

    So lovely to hear this simple explanation of simplicity. I thank God for my mom who regularly went though our toys and donated some to charity 🤣. I hated it at the time but she was right, it serves me well now. Thank you Fr, always praying for your intentions 🙏🏻

    Fr. Rippeger i love my pets and I experience sorrow when they die. My pets are not things. They are living creatures capable of great gentleness, affection and they protect us. I understand what you say about attachment to things, but I don't agree that it applies to our pets, companion animals or therapy animals. 💚

      Attachments aren't just to things, they are also to people. These are the hardest attachments to let go of. We need to detach from our parents, our spouse, our children, and even ourselves. Detachment doesn't mean that we never see them again. It means that we love them through our love of God, not alongside our love of God.

    I grew up in the US in an affluent family but they were temperate. They would buy high quality but few things. I was taught it's better to have 3 outfits of good quality and design than a closet full of shoddy stuff, for example because the high quality clothing would last for years. We didn't even have a clothes dryer until 1970 when I had my daughter. I now live in Israel and have no car. I ride the buses at age 76 and am healthier for it because the stops require a certain amount of walking. I again don't have a dryer because of the cost of electricity so I hang my clothes, we all do. This is a bit of a challenge in the rainy season but we manage. I have a nice 1 bedroom apartment but it is all of 600 to 645 sq. ft. These three things alone are shocking to Americans. I have no TV by choice. I indulged in a vacuum cleaner that also washes the floor because our floors are tile and at my age, it is simply a more effective means of cleaning very dusty floors. My apartment came partially furnished but I found a few nice things outside that people put out for the needy to take when they no longer want them. I own nothing with a designer logo and have no interest in getting them.

    At around 5:55, Fr. Ripperger commented that someone running over your dog isn't worth getting upset over (unless I misheard or misunderstood). Wouldn't it be justified to be upset about the death of a family pet?

      Yes, I'd be upset if someone ran over my cat, which is why she's a house cat. It would be far worse, however, if someone ran over my husband! Our reaction should be proportionate. I hate clutter, a home filled with useless knickknacks. Example, a hoarder house, person has a serious problem.

    • @gray_mara
      @gray_mara 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is justified to be upset. He might as well say that people have no right to be upset that someone rolled over their child. Grieving is not bad. It's if we love something more than God that is a problem, not that we have love in the first place.

      I thought about buying a dog, living as a single young man probably for life i figure I could use some company. But then I thought, well a dog may shorten my prayer time, so I decided not to buy one so I can pray more and have no excuse for not doing it.

    • @magicattic
      @magicattic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Wrong. St. Francis loved animals because he saw in them the wonder and beauty of God. He saw an innocence that humans so often lack. This idea that he was some kind of PETA animal hugger is wrong. His emotions would have been perfectly ordered to God, so if a dog got run over, he would accept it as God's will and move on. I doubt he would get upset at all.

    • @bruhidk3069

      @@magicattic Idk.. we can’t get upset if animals die or else we are attached? I get that we must accept it’s God’s will and move on, but we can also do that regarding our family members deaths, but I’m sure you can still be detached if you mourn their deaths for at least a little… no? Our lady of sorrows was heartbroken over the death of her son and she was detached from everything, or does that not count because Christ is God? I guess so. Idk just seems crazy to not mourn the death of a loved one
