I lived in wales in the eighties and in the winter I used to let the "hippies" pitch there tipees in my front field as it was high ip and didn't get flooded. They were really nice and respectful and kept the field clean and tidy and they would help out if I had a problems . The village hates me as they said I was encouraging them. I saw it as helping other human beings .
What a fabulous short this is! You can't fault people from wanting to be free from the corporate state and I bet that crime is negligible there, unlike our "safe" towns and cities. This is really inspiring stuff.
What a wonderful, warm hearted documentary. This man's soul is visibly clear from your depiction of him in the film. Such detail in showing the peaceful vibe here. Found it very bittersweet. Thank you!
In terms of security, when making the film we obviously had a lot of equipment on us, just like the people live there have their prizes possessions. Everyone in the community is very reliable and very down to earth and everybody respects one another, getting to know the people in the valley, I truly feel that disrespect to others belongings isn't even a question. :)
We try to do the same at our 1949 Council Built ( giant by today’s’ standards ) 3 bed semi & long garden in the SW new forest. This district has become “ Gentrified “ over the last 40 years and it’s incredible to me that my dad could remember folk living in Benders within the forest enclosures before the houses like the one we live in were built. Those Local Authority built ones near Beaulieu were specifically built to house those staying in the woods at East End near there - along with local families’ younger generations ...houses which are now being sold for god knows how many hundred thousand pounds. Whilst todays indigenous youngsters’ best chance for an affordable roof over their head is in the cramped overflow estates of Southampton - costing two thirds of any wages , 17 miles away. And we’re supposed to believe life is somehow “ easier “ or “ better “ or more civilised than 60 years ago ? In the ‘ English Countryside ‘ it isn’t really imho. My mate Roger from East End no Beaulieu mentioned folk he’d met in Tally 35 years ago and I nearly left for there 17 years back when things got silly ! Glad to see you’re still capable of living your lives undisturbed all these years later. 🏴😇❤️👍from Wilverley Enclosure Phoney Witches 🐢
I've always been curious about Tipi Valley. Never been there but it's about 15 miles away from where I live. I'm sure that life is tough and I'm not sure I'd be able to do it myself, but I have respect for these people. Their ecological footprint is negligible and they all seem pretty cool. Just quietly getting on with their lives in a simple honest way. Good luck to them and I hope I can call by one day for a cuppa and a chat.
Exactly the same here, I’ve been wanting and trying to live on the land like this for 30-35 years, but campaigning and life got in the way, I’m planning on visiting the valley in the next monthl, hopefully things will work out for more! ✌🏽🌎
What a fantastic video! I'd like to live with people like that..that way. Its a hard life but its a real life. Living, not just existing through the motions. Wish I could find folks like this to work together
A great earth strong man rick spoke to him on the phone and my wife lived there for a year on and off. great blessings to all the people that live there i wish i could but i dont have any work there if i did i would be there like a rocket . i had a friend called Roy who was just like rick a very earth strong and natural man . merry meet to all there we hope to visit soon we could end up staying who knows ??
lovely video folks, yesterday my daughter and i attended a funeral of one of your people mark goodwin and we commented on the nice atmosphere and friendliness of the people at the funeral ,i admire the way you reside together in harmony back to nature janice and sarah
This is cool. I am thinking of getting a tipi and starting this kind of life. Will take some time to build up to it. I love how they don't see themselves as better or worse than the "outside" world. Many hippies think they are above but the true one understands his place.
After watching this I’m going to try find out if I can come and help out for a bit. I think going back to what living really means is important mentally physically and spiritually. Well done for working out what you want!
hia you all!! here's one of sid's old " part-time long-time "(he sed) girlfriends...on the computer at last, it took me long enough!!!but at last i'm finding out that "people" as in tipi people, are still around!!!!!so lovely to see this!!!!love to you all!!!! from ruthy ruth as in "big yello tipi people ruth"
I could live like this real easy it would be alot better than dealing with traffic and people it just gets exhausting dealing with city life imagine the freedom and peace of mind you would have!!! You can just walk outside and take a leak without worrying about people!!! It dosent take much for me to be comfortable i lived in a rv for 6 months in the mountains and loved it!!!
I liked the *yurt* someone had already setup and the *tipi* as well. I believe the circular framed structure was a larger *yurt under construction.* The gentleman with the greenhouse and outdoor privy within it's own hut was a nice addition and I thought was quite spacious. Not too shabby for living off the land.
I remember drawing the kids faces back in '86 during a gathering after cooking up some large meal. I lived there for several weeks until this lovely lady and her partner, I think he was a John (they moonbathed) said to me "are you going to join in" lol had to toughen up and carry those logs.
And not being a victim of this monetary machine. We live like prostitutes. we sell our body to make money so we can have a roof over our heads. You work 30-40 years retire if you are lucky and more than likely you'll be dead within 5 years.
thank you so much for the documentary I am homeless myself I have been looking for off-the-grid living slash teepee living as well I would love to run across the community like that nice homely down to earth people if you guys know of a place for sale please contact me and let me know thank you guys for your time may God bless you guys and you guys as family
Hi Emily, Great video! I'm in my 3rd year at uni studying Photojournalism. I'm concentrating on Tipi Valley for my degree project, making a photographic documentary of life at Tipi Valley. I've been once before, just before Christmas, but there was hardly anybody around... was just wondering, when you went did you just go round and knock on doors to introduce yourself? I've been in contact with Rik but nobody else knows who I am or when I'm going to be there. Any advice would be great! Thanks!
I see rick is using blue bags there, which must mean this video is relativity new and Your in Carmarthenshire. Tipi valley is a legend I've heard about for years, the bottom of the valley and the top. Not sure what is true exactly, but I would love to visit if that's OK? I'm very drawn to this style of living but my partner isn't. Although by this winter I will have fitted a log burner to heat the house, and my family own 12 acres of disidous woodland to fuel it :)
I wish we still had this kind of freedom in America. We have been "zoned" out of human existence by stupid local ordinances. We can not even build "tiny houses" because of minimum size restrictions. The state of California has now made it illegal to live in a vehicle, (the origin of all hippies, no less), so much for "liberalism". Something has to change fast here, one out of four children are now living in poverty in America, due to the Great Depression or should I say "Recession"!
California is not the only west coast state to make it illegal to camp/live in a vehicle, I believe the same is true of Oregon and Washington state, correct me if I am wrong. I had a shop fire at a business on 7 acres that I ran for 25 years. The township "rezoned it without my consent from "agricultural" (which permits light industrial/business use), to R`-2 residential (multiple housing). As a consequence they told me I could not rebuild my shop or even construct any type of temporary structure (storage sheds/canvas covered structures over poles etc.). But I could however continue to operate my business from this location, since I would be under the "grandfather act", HOW NICE of them! If you think your free in America, just try using your property for something that the local "authorities" frown upon. By the way, I did farm and keep some horses there as I am Mennonite. My primary business was house moving/seawall construction and my barn was not really used as much for the business as for the farm. I had absolutely no customer traffic going to my shop and never had noise/lighting issues as we do not use electricity. Two years after the shop/barn fire, I was told I had to get rid of my horses and animals , as the "New township ordinance" , again passed without my knowledge or consent, prohibited the keeping of animals on property where you don't reside. Exceptions of course were made for the mega corporate farm several miles away (same township) where only paid employees show up to care for the livestock. "Free" America? I think not. Russia is currently offering new immigrants 160 hectares of free land, real government health care, exemption from military service and a $20,000 relocation stipend. to repopulate to abandon Russian farm communities. Many Mennonites are currently moving there to be free again.
Yes, I would like to hear more about Montenegro. I have a friend here in Michigan, U.S.A. that was from there and told me just a little bit about it. Land here is $6,000-$7,000 an acre (a bit larger than a hectar). and on the edge of a city like mine, it is $25,000-$40,000 an acre. After my shop burned the local government had the nerve to actually raise my property taxes by $150 a year. I now pay $2,249.00 per year on bare land!
Its not exactedly different in UK its just that 1. These people have been left alone for 35 years and more and have influential members and supporters In the beginning the local council ignored them as to intervene they would have to house them in council homes, get involved with 20-30 people in one go, in poor and rural Wales this was beyond their grasp….cheers Rik who speaks mostly is an ex Anglian Vicar …a long time ago but just to give more background
Hi there me and a mate really fancy this tipe of life style new start ect can u tell me . ..... do I have to have permission to live there ? Could we just go and set up ? And dose it have to be a teepee ? If u can get back to me asap that would be great thanks aiden :)
+Bill Nolan If one knows how to properly setup a tipi with door facing to the *east as in North America* and rig out the smoke flaps and *don't forget the liner* one has a small fire near the center. *Get the book The Tipi by Reginald & Gladys Laubin.* This book is about the best on the subject for the last 40 or 50 years.
I came here with a rather romanticised view of it, but it looks like very, very hard work. It must attract a fair amount of nutters looking to move there too.
Those days have gone forever in both england a ireland we now live in a woke world where we are controled by a woke goverment we have no rights no freedom of speech no freedom to roam or march infact we have no rights anymore in this woke society so if you are on this vidio i would love for you to text back i to was like you are back then i traveled all across america now both england a ireland we have no rights anymore the world has become such a horrible place to live these days in 2024
That is so wrong. My cousin has lived in tipi valley since the 70's and is a very skilled carpenter with a grown up son who has turned out to be just as lovely as his parents
My years on the convoy were the happiest, most exciting, most solidarity minded lifestyle...I learned about respect...communal ways...live and let live..It takes all sorts to make a world...checkout the song... Im a freeborn man of the travelling people. xxx Stay strong.

Thanks folks, you've made a nice little film here. Best of luck with the rest of your course.

I'm an old, life-long city-dweller. Looking at this I wonder, what is city life all about? Collecting more and more stuff that we don't even need?
you are such a sweet and honest person.
It must be so lovely to live off the grid away from modern society but it's like permanent camping!
And not being a victim of this monetary machine. We live like prostitutes. we sell our body to make money so we can have a roof over our heads. You work 30-40 years retire if you are lucky and more than likely you'll be dead within 5 years.
