    TRIGGER WARNINGS ACCIDENTALLY NOT INCLUDED IN VIDEO SO HERE IT IS: this is a series of YA books for an audience of 13+ and the vid is appropriate for it. However, there's some content which may need to be warned of in advance. This includes abuse, manipulation, stalking in a romantic relationship and food intake disorders, specifically bullying/jokes about food intake disorders. There's also a mention of wrist cutting in a non self harm way.

They had to make them that way so it would be so uncomfortable to sit on them, with multiple legs just stabbing you in the butt, that nobody could be tempted into the sin of drunkenness by getting too comfortable at a bar.

    As a Jew I do not claim this weird angel lore. For reference, Cheshvan is the only Jewish month that no holidays fall, but it is the month reserved for Moshiach(messiah) to return and bring peace to all peoples. No weird angel stuff, if anything our version of angels just mostly chill and occasionally come to warn folks or grab lunch

    • @thedarklrd6714
      @thedarklrd6714 ปีที่แล้ว +92

      I like the idea of chill angels. It gives me the image of these terrifying, alien-esque entities just laying around on the tops of buildings or on people's yards, occasionally yoinking food and telling people when bad things will happen

    • @addysaurus_gayii
      @addysaurus_gayii ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Same. As a Jewish person, I also do not condone this angel lore. I headcanon our angel lore to be that angels are real and can come down to earth, but their only purpose is to mildly screw with people and make peoples lives mildly more irritating just as a practical joke. They never do anything too bad, nothing that completely ruins things, they just make things ever so slightly more tedious and irritating than they need to be. They are the type of supernatural entity that can alter your thoughts but only use it to make you forget your passwords.

      The bundle of eye-covered concentric circles with a few to many wings descended into the living room through a blinding beam of light and thus it spoke "Hey dude there will be another flood man, Yeah sorry the rainbow turned out to be a lie bud" the angel somehow grabbed a sandwich out of my fridge "Hey can i have this i missed lunch? Thanks pal. But yeah you gotta build a ark." The angel then ascended back too the heavens leaving a last message for me "Please remember to get some bigfoots! God is still bummed out about the unicorns not making it last time."

      When talking about angels, in Judaism they are G'd's messengers and are unable to do anything but His Will, which is actually why humans with free will are considered to be more important or more valuable than angels, as we can actually choose to serve Him rather than be made to. That's mostly what the mainstream, religious Jew will know about angels.
      In Kaballah studies, however, there are so mang words (including nephilim, btw, and satan, and azazel) which somehow have made their way into mainstream culture but completely disconnected from any Jewish teaching even though the study of Kaballah is inherently part of Jewish scholarly life. I don't personally understand how these mystical concepts that few scholarly Jews have dared to touch somehow got into mainstream novels such as Hush Hush or TV shows like Supernatural. I'm also a religious Jew, btw.
      And yes, as said above, Cheshvan, also known as Mar Cheshvan (or bitter Cheshvan) is the one month with no Jewish holidays, fasts or mourning days that commemorate any given occasion. That's pretty much it. Also, it's the month I married xD

    Lol this book inspired me and my friends to write a YA parody book together when we were in high school. Our school used to put posters on the insides of the bathroom stalls advertising different YA books in an attempt to encourage students to read. Hush Hush was one of them, along with a few other really cheesy sounding YA books. My friends and I started referring to these books as "bathroom stall books" and we decided to write our own. It was about a girl with time travel powers who attends a school for supernatural beings. She gets caught in a love triangle with Gabriel, an angel from the past, and Damian, a demon from the future. She time travels so that she can go to a fancy Victorian ball and fight in a rebel army in a dystopian future. At the end the three of them end up in a polyamorous relationship.

      Having grown up in the thick of Mormonism in Utah I can very safely say that the fetishization of abuse and assault are pretty common coping mechanisms of women who grew up under strict control. I knew a LOT of girls who couldn't differentiate violence and romance, especially in my teen years (and we don't have time to unpack what that kind of fetishization does to the men they went on to marry, either). Fetishization as a coping mechanism for finding freedom in control is a complicated issue but yeah, it's pretty prevalent for Mormon women. I don’t know if this applies to this book (book 3 where the “bad boy” suddenly has darker skin), but as an ex-mormon I feel like I should inform you all that there’s a concept called “the mark of Cain” where the reason people have dark skin is a physical representation of being sinful, and by being holy and following the teachings in the prophets and the Book of Mormon (and the new testament and the bible) you will be blessed with whiteness.
    Yeah. Joseph Smith was racist. This “mark of Cain” isn’t really taught openly any more and not everyone knows of it, but it definitely influences the religion’s view of POC and darker skin in general.

And the reason it’s a prescription drug as well as an OTC isn’t because it’s like a serious heavy duty painkiller in higher doses, it’s so people that need it like everyday with a doctor’s approval can get it from the pharmacy and have insurance cover part of the cost.

    Since the author is Mormon, I don't think she picked a Jewish month on random, because Mormon doctrine is suuuper weird about Jews (and literally everyone). According to their doctrine Native Americans are one of the lost tribes of Israel, which split into white and black people, because as a punishment for idolatry, god turned them black. And like there's just so much racism to unpack there. Firstly this claims they are Jews AND Native Americas, which erases both antisemitism and colonialism, and then "being black is a punishment from god"???? I've got the understanding that not all modern Mormons believe this, but the fact that she appropriates Judaism is I think very telling here...

    I also absolutely agree with your assessment that the author probably saw that Cheshvan takes place kind of vaguely around October/November most years, and went "Ah, this must be the old, Biblical Spooky Month." because there is no Jewish holiday or significance to Cheshvan that I can even begin to think of.

    Would be really fun to see the protagonist react to it not having read the bible and therefore not believing this wierd scary looking entity they see is in fact an angel, perhaps even assumes its a demon or monster.. it would take time to develop trust and a positive dynamic.. perhaps the angel could be a messenger to earn the people of a big oncoming disaster and the protagonist after learning to trust this angel works with it to find a way to get the message across without the dangers of being seen as a threat, alien, a science experiment or being interrupted by every question that a Christian may have to ask.
    It could be like a buddy cop story with some Satyre implemented where basically there's opportunities for everyone to have a gag. Like the protagonist could be a hardcore athiest for example. There could also be a lot of good messages to tell in the story too as well as points that could be debated on

    As someone who was not like the other girls in high school (I'm a boy, plot twist) and reading House of Night instead of Twilight, I got to say both books messed me up in different ways. But hearing this one I am so concerned that anybody could ever like it, like it's weird to like Twilight but I can accept that and move on because for one thing you put so much time into reading it. House of Night had some really good ideas and Native American representation but then threw it all in the trash to go magic girl AU.
    Hush-Hush sounds like an amalgamation of all of my least favorite things in all of the books that I've read over the last twenty-plus years, all congealed into this meat Jell-O of nastiness that I do not want to touch nor consume.

    I think I already commented about Hush Hush on another one of your videos but God, am I excited for this one. The first was my favourite YA fantasy/paranormal romance book when I was a teen but I also disliked all three of the others (the 2nd&3rd because they're boring and the 4th one... well...). I so enjoyed the mystery aspect of the first one that I made both my mum and my best friend read it.
    ETA: I only read Finale because years after finishing Silence, one of my classmates revealed she liked the series and told me, after I had explained my hatred for the middle two books, the fourth one was better. It's true it isn't as uneventful as Crescendo and Silence but nothing in it makes sense.

    That Lore Chart filled me with absolute dread & anxiety despite never having nor planning to read this book series. Honestly, this book series is an excellent touchstone as to why it’s extremely important & critical to not just craft & define the bones of your magic system & basic lore before or early in your writing process even if you only plan on writing a singular book in said world; but also to FIRMLY stick to those foundations for the whole story or series. It’s not completely taboo to modify the system as you write but writers should make the effort to ensure it doesn’t fundamentally break everything set up simply for the sake of inserting some revelation or twist or new characters. A firm magic & lore ruleset is excellent for breeding creativity similar to how so many innovations in filmmaking both technically and narratively resulted from working within & around limitations. In travesties like this book series however the author deliberately chooses to abandon & fracture their own setup for sake of getting certain plot results which end up totally worthless and un-compelling anyway & will only frustrate readers earnestly trying to meet the author’s story halfway & the allowance of their suspension of disbelief which is hard to re-establish when the author so blatantly obliterates it.

    i read hush (comma) hush when i was about 15 I think? i cant remember if I finished it or not, but I remember thinking it was badly written (and I was prepared to ignore a LOT of bs in my paranormal romance at the time).
    my first "oh no" was on the /first page/. like no offense to people with this name, but Nora is not a particularly sexy name for your leading lady. there were two noras in my grandmother's nursing home. i kept picturing an old lady. also "patch" for the love interest? like the puppy from 101 dalmations?
    the point where I really gave up (mentally, i kept reading g-d knows why) was when, inorder to make the reader think of Patch as this dangerous, bad boy, it's revealed that he plays pool at the local bar, and rides a motorbike.
    my grey-haired, middle-aged dad does both of those things.
    i don't know why I kept reading after this; once you stop finding the love interest sexy, it becomes immediately obvious how 1-dimensional and boring the characters are, and the terrible writing leaps out and backhands you across the face
