Grading involves altering the slope and elevation of the land, which includes leveling, creating swales, and building up or removing earth to prepare the site for construction. It's a broad term that covers many aspects of site preparation to ensure proper drainage and a stable foundation.
Excavation, on the other hand, is more specific and refers to the process of digging and removing earth. It is often one of the steps within the grading process, typically done to create foundations, trenches, or other sub-surface structures.
So, while excavation is a part of grading, grading is the broader term that includes various activities to prepare a site for building.

For foundations you need to excavate and then fill back with a porous material. This is elementary and it's funny how a landscape architect is totally oblivious to this.
Oh and no, there's not a working function for excevating and filling back for foundations in Revit.

Architects don't have any experience in construction phase, so it doesn't surprise me. But if you need to calculate filled earth after excavation, now you can. Check my other comment on this video.
