Fun fact, the OG instruction of MtG was to put your lands in front. It was part of the idea that the opponent's creatures had to first cross your lands. So in the early years of magic we all played with the lands in front.
I was constantly worried that if Brian and Kyle made too much physical contact with one another, they'd merge together like the end of Time Cop!
A great episode again, and now I kinda want someone to make a proxy of Riku of Two Reflections with Brian and Kyle lol.
The four cascades are seperate triggers, so when you hit a card on one, you cast that spell and the resolve it, before resolve any of the other cascade triggers. It usually doesn't matter, but when you cast creatures you trigger Chulane which affects what's on top of your library, and the order of the cascaded spell can matter (like the primordial vs elesh norn).
Jacob is back!!! And you got Brian Kibler from Because Science! He's got such great hair. It was such a fun episode! As always, the table chemistry is great and it's fun laughing along with everyone at the jokes and quips.
A couple mistakes with Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite (Mistakes that didn't really matter but I'm contractually obligated to point out because I'm a nerd.) Olivia's manifest would have died due to state-based actions and after Brian died to commander damage during the first strike step, Jacob's dragons would have gotten bigger again, dealing more damage to Kyle and making more treasures.
Hands down the best commander show intro on the internet! I absolutely love this show!

Definitely one of the most natural feeling edh channel, the banter and the dialogue doesn't feel super forced like a lot of other channels. Really enjoyed all of the vids so far!
First hearing about your channel on "Tolarian Community College" and making the decision to check the channel out. I found myself being drawn to seeing who your guests are, what decks you are playing and looking forward to each new video you produce. I love the style, the casual feeling and interaction and the focus on balancing gameplay with personal reactions to plays. Both of you and your crew deserve an applause for your hard work! You all should be proud or what you have created! Well Done!
I am now waiting for the episode of "commander at home the musical" with jacob bertrand and it just has kyle in the background shaking his head for about an hour :D

One Kibler chose Philosophy the other Kibler chose science!
But always a hoot to see Kyle Hill play he brings such creative decks with the right scale of power level to a pod and he does some insane value engines. Jacob showing off why Dragons being double-troubled is fantastic and why they can do such insane damage if not enough checks are brought against them. Kibler's Chulain deck I can see where it gets out of hand he was quickly racking up in ramp and value and it's a shame he didn't hit flyers to stop the dragon train from killing him. Olivia with the Reconnaissance tech man if she went off it probably would have been a one turn kill out of nowhere from her.
And of course we got more good doggo energy! Seriously I love the table chatter that happens in this show, it really does feel like a casual game of magic which Commander is all about for me.

Really liked that they brought THE Brian Kibler on the show this week. He and Jacob brought so much energy, Kibler was literally shaking.

Please note: each apex devastator cascade resolves completely first before you see the next card. It's the second time it's misplayed 😅

Also Kyle should have actually taken more damage in the second last swing. Since Bryan died after the first one, the Elesh Norn would have fallen away and the second hit would have been +4 damage (2 power *2 creatures)
But it made zero difference in the end and was a great vibe. Mistakes are part of the game 🚀
It's a fair callout though. I play a lot of Maelstrom and it pains me every time someone tries to convince me its in reverse order for whatever reason. If we don't mention it, nobody will learn!

+1 to Kyle and Go Shintai, I vastly prefer deck builds like that over just grabbing the most powerful commander. An added deck building constraint for me was to have all cards other than non-basic lands have the word "Of" in the name. It works surprisingly well, and all the shrines have of in the name so it's only restricting the rest of the deck.
I'm actually in the process of building a Go-Shintai shrines and curses deck. My constraint is that everything needs to be an enchantment outside of lands. I'm debating on sticking Thassa in there to blink removal enchantments too :D

36:00 I hate to correct a Pro Tour player, but the spells off Apex Devastator don't resolve in reverse order. Per the ruling from 2020-11-10:
"Each instance of cascade triggers and resolves separately. The spell you cast due to the first cascade ability will go on the stack on top of the second, third, and fourth cascade abilities. That spell will resolve before you exile cards for the second cascade ability. The spell you cast for the second will resolve before you exile cards for the third, and so on."
So you'd decide whether or not to cast Force of Will, decide not to, and put it to the bottom. Then reveal to Mirari's Wake, decide to cast it, resolve the cast. Then reveal to Solemn Simulacrum, decide to cast it, trigger Chulane, resolve Chulane's trigger (assuming you still put the Temple into play, resolve the temple ETB), resolve the spell, trigger the ETB on Solemn, and then resolve the ETB on Solemn. Then reveal to Elesh Norn, decide to cast it, trigger Chulane, resolve Chulane's trigger, resolve the spell. Then resolve state-based actions that would remove creatures your opponents' control with toughness lower than 3. Then resolve Apex Devastator.

Seeing Kyle flinch at the card flickers and remembering his "Autism is my Superpower" video where he talks about how much it meant to him when work colleagues no longer crumpled bags of chips in the office. It's all in good fun, I know. That video is just the first thing that popped to my mind.

@Olivia: long-time Alesha as a commander player here; You can activate reconnaissance AFTER the creature(s) deal damage…so you can swing, deal damage, still get the tokens and untap your warriors

I'm loving this series so much, my face hurts from smiling so much! My only tiny piece of feedback would be to maybe add little subtitles at certain parts when multiple people are talking at once, or when someone says something that can't be easily heard. The youtube captions are pretty helpful, but sometimes those custom subtitles just add to the humor, lol

Minor Spoilers, But correct me if I am wrong, but Brian would have died on the first swing from Jacob's commander the turn he died, so the 2nd swing with all of Jacobs double strike creatures would no longer be effected by Elish Norn's -2/-2 right?

Apex is resolved incorrect 😊
All 4 cascade triggers go to the stack, and then resolve one by one - and in that resolution, the new spell is being cast, so the first spell will resolve/etb/create triggers etc fully, before cards for the next cascade is revealed.

Love your show guys - but I'm going to go ahead and be that guy again xD - Apex Devastator does not resolve in reversed order - It doesn't resolve like Kibler did it :P It resolves like this:
Cascade is a triggered ability that uses the stack. So when you cast Apex Devastator, you also have four instances of Cascade on the stack.

If all players pass, the topmost object on the stack (and only it!) resolves. So you exile cards until you get a nonland with CMC 9 or less, and cast it. The stack is now:

Then all players pass again, and the cascaded spell resolves.
Then all players pass again, and the next instance of Cascade resolves. Another spell gets cast.

Rinse, repeat.
If any of those spells happen to also have Cascade, their own cascade trigger will be above everything else on the stack, so it gets resolved first (and looks for cards with even lesser CMC). So understanding the order of operations here matters

at 29:18 Brian played a Wood Elves and resolved its ETB trigger before the Chulane trigger. Because Chulane's trigger is on casting it should always resolve before the elf trigger.
I think their house may be haunted. There is an eerie woman in a red dress that keeps appearing behind Kibler.
@29:20 Brian, you can't trigger Wood Elves before triggering Chulane. Wood Elves is an ETB, Chulane is a cast trigger. Chulane always goes off before ETBs do :-)
Lol I just want one episode of the sitcom where Brian is Jacob's Magic-obsessed dad that keeps inviting his sons science teacher (Kyle Hill) over to their house for game knights much to the chagrin of his cool-kid son.
Dude Jacob's first turn was the biggest power move I've seen in magic and I've seen coverage live of a large tournament where someone brought a fucking snake tribal deck.

What’s the community’s opinion on reconnaissance in commander? Because it seems like every time I try to explain the way it can be used after combat damage has already been dealt I end up with other players acting like it’s complete bs. All it does is give my creatures vigilance, and it does so in what I think is a neat and interesting way which rewards the player for understanding a complex rules interaction. It’s to the point where I just scry it to the bottom of my deck if I know it’s going to cause issues at the table

You can't resolve the wood elves trigger before Chulane because Chulane is a cast trigger and wood elves is an etb.
