When I was a kid, F. W. Woolworth was still in business. They had an old fashioned fountain bar, and every single step you took in the building resulted in creaking floor boards. It also, like the East Rochester Volunteer fire department (which had a stage on the second floor), had an ancient smell to it.
The main thing about Rochester's business history, is that this was a center of manufacturing. I don't think Rochester ever recovered when the industry moved away.

Had lunch there many times. Also Leos Dinner which is now at a Harley dealership near Cleveland. Visited it a few years ago.
