South West Coast Path - North Cornwall

  • Having completed the Somerset and North Devon sections, we felt strong and ready to tackle the 140 miles of the path along North Cornwall. We had our fair share of wet and windy weather, but there were glorious sunny sections also resulting in a good mix of everything.
    Very much enjoyed North Cornwall. I think our mood changed a little in this section. We lost the giddy excitement of the previous two counties, with our mood being fresher and it still resembling a normal 1-2 week trek. In North Cornwall, we started to realise what it was like to do a long distance trek where you walk week after week after week with just a rest day in-between. That was a new regime for us and I think it was strange for us mentally to deal with it and stay strong.

    Walked from Minehead to just short of Clovelly about three years ago. Trying to get inspired to do some more. Just started reading 'The Salt Path' by Raynor Winn (good read) and have started to find the mojo again. Randomly searching TH-cam and found your video - more inspiration - thanks.

    Interesting stuff. I admire your determination to get around Cornwall. Many schooners have tried and failed. Their wrecks are littered around Cornwall like leaves around a tree in late Autumn. I will subscribe. Normally I would not but you have interested me. This is my birth county and of my forefathers going back 7 generations. You, Sir, have done it justice. Thank you.

    Love your videos! You've inspired me to go back to Cornwall and do more serious hiking. I experienced the Path between St. Ives and Zennor . Glad to see I wasn't the only one who thought the winds on those cliffs can be a bit rough. St. Ives really is a lovely town.

    Hi darrell,well after having a really crappy day and feeling a little down I decided to take 10 minutes out and search sw coast path as this is my favourite place in the world especially around Godrevy and st Ives just to cheer myself up a bit and look forward to my trip there in May with the family and dogs and stumbled on your little adventure it's just really cheered me up,the music is great and the memories it brings Back from the times I've had down there just really gave me the lift I needed to pull myself together and get on with it,anyway I've subbed to your channel and I'm gonna sit and watch the whole journey.great film can't wait to watch the rest thanks

    I would genuinely love it if you posted a list of the music you used in this series. It is so inspirational, the journey of course is special, but the choice of music is amazing. I have watched this journey in its entirety a few times, and the music almost blows me away as much as the journey. Much love to the three of you.

      Thank you kindly. I'm glad somebody has taken the effort to point out this element of the videos. A lot of hard work goes into choosing the right music, not only for scene setting, but also choosing lesser known artists who I can use officially, who (presumably) appreciate the promotion, and who are not likely to make a snap decision to have it banned on TH-cam videos in the future. I've added the track names in the extra information panel on each video so folks can know which ones are used, and I've also created a Spotify public playlist of all the tracks used at open.spotify.com/user/darrellgrundy/playlist/3ijgcBJIpUBHT0AHi8ZfrZ ... Enjoy!

I agree with the estimation of Rick Stein's fish and chips. It's in the top ten but nowhere near as good as some we had at Drumnadrochit at Loch Ness! (also twice the price!). • @DarrellGrundy
      @DarrellGrundy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes - plenty of streams along the way (sterilising this), and towns / villages pubs etc. where you can fill up. We just had that small issue as featured in the video in South Devon, which seemed to be drier / absent of streams and had to carry more on our backs to be sure. Good luck with your trip

      Good luck - I'm sure you'll enjoy, but weather might be an interesting factor at that time of year. What questions do you have about wild camping spots? I think most are a bit hesitant setting out about how easy wild camping will be on that trail, but once you get going a do the first couple of nights, it becomes quite easy to choose a good location out of the way or quiet.

      We wild camped a lot of it. No hassle, but we were fairly discrete and mindful of not being an annoyance. We loved the wild camps for being closer to the picturesque spots sunrise and sunset, but yeah, a good deal to with saving money else the full walk would cost a fortune if staying in lodgings. We did some camp sites too. Enjoy your hike.

    Haha, at the beginning your tent is very close to CSOS (giant satellites, government listening station thing). Surprised you didn’t have men with rifles after you. There are some good spots to camp around Northcote, just before you get into Bude, including an amazing hidden ledge used by abseilers (it’s off the path and fairly tricky to get to via some wooden steps and a very narrow bits with drops but worth it when you find it).

    Love your vids still. what is your suggestion for wild camping during your walk? the pros cons

    • @DarrellGrundy
      @DarrellGrundy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Funnily enough, I've started writing a book about that since there's so many questions and folks understandably want a lot of help to properly prep for the big journey. But in the meantime, I can give a short summary which is we totally understand that wild campers will be a bit apprehensive about how easy it will be on the SWCP to find good, wild sites along the way, and not to get any hassle from oiks, or to be moved on from land owners. We had the same concerns. Of course, we're not advocating that folks should go out and blatantly camp wherever they want with no respect for land owners, locals or visitors wanting to admire the natural scenery. But if you wild camp with respect, then generally we found the majority of folks were tolerant of it, and there's plenty of beautiful and interesting wild camps along the SWCP to make it an amazing experience.

    I've been following your walk and really enjoying it - well done, I think it's brilliant. I'd like to do this walk next summer 2017 on my own and will do it for charity. I would really appreciate some advice. Are there campsites en route? Is it ok to wild camp - Do I need permission? Do you advise walking boots or walking shoes. And also, did you pre book your occasional hotel stays?

    • @DarrellGrundy
      @DarrellGrundy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lisa - only just seen this comment. Apols. for the delay in responding. Yes there are a lot of camp sites along the way or some distance off the trail. There is usually space in them to get a small pitch if turning up without notice, but during the school holidays, some can be fully booked up. Wild camping, in our experience, was fine where you're considerate to the land owners and others sharing the trail. It'll be too difficult to ask the land owners permission unless it's obvious (i.e. nearby farm), so you just have to risk it. We had lightweight boots. With heavy backpacks, some ankle support is important to reduce risk of twisted ankles. If you had a light backpack, cross trainers would be fine I think. Pre-book hotel stays - yes! They are busy in tourist season. Enjoy your trip!

    Is it okay to camp anywhere, or are there restrictions?

    • @DarrellGrundy
      @DarrellGrundy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are normal restrictions - i.e. not technically allowed / legal to camp anywhere on the SWCP, however it is tolerated if you be considerate to the land owner / locals / visitors in terms of site selection and time you camp down / get going again, and obviously mandatory to leave no trace. Thanks

    How easy was it to find wild camping spots? Having hiked in America and Scotland I got so used to being able to csmp wherever. Then amidst covid I tried to hike the Coast to Coast... my god it was a camping nightmare, everywhere was someone's garden or farm. Just rubbish trying to camp in England. I do not recommend that hike by the way (Coast to Coast) but HIGHLY recommend The West Highland Way

    • @DarrellGrundy
      @DarrellGrundy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was fairly easy, but in summer you have to be respectful of people out and about enjoying the outdoors and don't necessarily want to see tents spoiling their views. So we found places out of sight from the paths, and set down late and moved on early. Only the busier town areas down in South Devon did we really struggle and just resigned ourselves to the fact we'd stay in accommodation instead.
