Brenner was attacked by a demogorgon. But we never saw him die. If you don't see the body, then he isn't dead.
Plus in season 2, 8 told 11 Brenner was still alive. And that was confirmed by the guy 8 wanted 11 to kill.

First CJ, then Jack. Clay's zonked out from lack of meds (I hope you're doing well; you look like you're doing fine)...by the end of this journey, Vecna's going to take everything from the JuiceLab sofa except Corey's hat.

Brenner has a scar on his face from the Demogorgan attack in season 1, there wasnt a death scene at all.

This is the episode that on rewatch really made me look deeper into Mike as a character. In this episode, Mike wonders that if he told El that he loved her that maybe she'd have taken him with her. Will says that it's scary to open up like that to people you care about because what if they don't like the truth? And Mike nods in agreement. But that doesn't make sense. Mike is saying that if he told El that he loved her in episode 3, that things might be different. So him agreeing with Will's statement wouldn't make sense. El wouldn't like the truth of Mike telling her that he loved her? She was practically begging him to say it back. She wanted to hear it. So obviously he isn't talking about that. So what truth could Mike possibly be hiding that El wouldn't like?
I thought about it, and theorized that Mike doesn't love her. That's why he can't say it. And he doesn't want to tell her that because that's the truth she wouldn't like, so he pretends like everything is okay. Which would give him a parallel with El. She pretended like her social life was fine and lied to Mike. And perhaps he's pretending like their romantic life is fine and lying to El. Which might be the reason why the show has given us insight into pretty much every other main character's thoughts at this point, but we've only gotten surface level stuff with Mike. He was pretty interested in finding out who Will was interested in, hasn't been able to say he loves El in the past few years, pays more attention to him than her, and is able to open his heart to Will and not El. I think Mike has a crush and he doesn't know how to handle that. Which is why he tried distancing himself from Will at first. To make those feelings go away.

If you’re saying Mikes yearning, doe eyed for Will without actually saying it, the Byler exit door is to the right. That’s not it at all. Rewatch season 1 all the way to now. He’s consistent. He loves her. I’m older so I get it. Love isn’t always words, it’s actions. Remember in this episode when his whole facial expression changes when El says to him “you never say it”, and his face goes completely serious and he says “I say it”, that’s because he does, just not in words. Every time that he’s taken care of her, made sure she was safe, from season 1 through to now, coming to visit her in California, yes he came to visit Will too, but the reiteration twice from Mike that “we’re friends, just friends” to Will is a sign that Mikes not completely clueless to Will that people think he is but it doesn’t mean he’s gay/bi/queer. Without going into any spoilers, there’s been key moments this season where Mike has been completely honest with El and I don’t know how much clearer things can be for people. Trying to pluck scenarios out of the air to fit a non existent narrative is bizarre. It’s one sided. When Mike sees El at one point in another episode (trying to do no spoilers) it’s the exact same way he looked at her in season 2, the episode “The Gate”.

I think Mike nods because he agrees with the general statement/sentiment of what Will said, not because it applies to his situation with El right now.

@@Chrissybrit43Thank you, finally someone said it. "It's hard to open up because what if they don't like the truth" is such a vague concept that can apply in so many ways, and in Mike's case it's because he's *cripplingly insecure.* This boy has had basically the entire universe against him and El being together, for years now; he's *consistently* saying how much he is afraid of losing her/can't lose her again. He loves her and he needs her, that's just facts at this point. He's scared to say it out loud because, again, the crippling insecurity says "but what if she doesn't need *you* anymore?"
Something that I feel like a lot of people are missing is that Will *sees this,* he *knows* how much El means to Mike, and while yes, he's been hinting to the *audience* that he has feelings for Mike, when it comes down to it, he doesn't say things to try and bribe him away from El or make him further doubt his relationship. Will clearly cares too much about Mike (and El!) to get in the way of that, and he *reassures* him about it several times over. (And nobody come out here saying "that's why Will is more deserving" or anything because that just dismisses Mike's feelings/decisions/opinions entirely and reduces him to a trophy love interest, which is gross.)
Mike cares a lot about Will, too, of course. They've been best friends since kindergarten. Mike is protective over Will in a similar way he is with El, and he is a very kind and gentle person in general towards people he loves, but that doesn't automatically mean he is romantically interested. From the way things have been going, I think it's pretty set in stone that Mike is all-or-nothing for El in that sense. And I think at this point Will has started to accept that. (Mind you, I actually ship both and I'm not anti- any of the ships or characters. But I'm *certain* that narratively the best and most likely outcome will be endgame Mike/Eleven and- again, *narratively-* pairing Mike up with Will would not make sense.)

@@islaythejabberwokky I disagree. Narratively, pairing Mike and Will makes more sense. The writer‘s have shown us time and time again that Mike and El are not compatible as a couple. Mike can‘t be himself when he‘s with her and tries to be as normal as possible (I can explain more in detail, if you’re interested). And I think most people miss the romantic dynamic between Will and Mike due to heteronormativity. There would be no discussion about Mike and Will’s romantic undertones from the beginning of season 1, if Will was a girl. Mike and El are continuously and SOLELY paralleled with Steve and Nancy (who didn‘t work out and probably still won‘t in season 5) and other platonic/familiar couples in the show (except the kissing part i guess). While Mike and Will have so many parallels with other canon romantic couples in the show (Lumax, Jancy, Jopper). Mike and Will’s relationship has always been special. They have a mutual understanding with each orher. Mike is only able to be open about his feelings when he‘s alone with Will. Mike is also more attentive and apologetic towards Will than he is towards El (especially in season 3 & 4). It becomes obvious when you actually pay attention to the scenes and compare them. Season 2 was basically all about Mike and Will’s relationship and season 1 also speaks more for Mike and Will‘s relationship than for Mike and El‘s. Mike was desperate to find Will and he was the most devastated when his body was found. Mike also didn‘t love El the moment he saw her, that was a lie he made up in the heat of the moment, in a life-or-death situation. If you pay attention to the monologue you will notice that all the things he said were replicated. He was inspired by Will‘s speech in the van and Eddie‘s speech in the cafeteria, e.g. Eddie told Dustin and Mike in ep. 1 of season 4 something in the line of „The future of hellfire. I knew it the moment a saw you. You were wearing that weird T-shirt (…). Sounds familiar, right? Well, Mike copied that line. Nothing from the monologue was original except of the „you‘re my superhero“ line which was improvised by the actor. So Mike‘s monologue for El wasn‘t sincere. He basically replicated words that were told to him by others. And Will had to push Mike to say I love you to El. Mike‘s even bracing himself before saying it. That‘s also why the background music during the monologue is called „You‘re the heart“, which is basically Will‘s love confession to Mike. Will is even in the frame when Mike says I love you to El. I think it is an intentional choice of the writer‘s to make the scene about Mike and Will even tho it‘s supposed to be an intimate moment between Mike and El.
Also, rewatch season 1. Yes, Mike was empathetic towards El, but that doesn’t mean he loved her (platonacially or romantically). He wanted to get rid of her the next morning but decided to let her stay because she mentioned the „bad men“. Of couse he lets her stay when he‘s threatened. And she also implied that she could help him find Will. But as soon as she couldn‘t find Will, Mike always lashed out on her and was very blameful towards her. He started to admire and idolize El when she saved his life on the cliff. And he first showed „romantic interest“ in the end of season 1 after Lucas put the idea in his head. The Mike Wheeler who told Max „How could I hate you? I don‘t even know you“ wouldn‘t just fall in love with someone he just met. The Duffer‘s don‘t believe in love at first sight anyways and the only time love at first sight was displayed in the show was in a comedic manner with Argyle and Eve. It was supposed to be not taken seriously.
There are a lot of reasons why it makes more sense for Mike and Will to end up together in the end, I wish I could name them all. There are a lot more angst and romantic tropes involved when it comes to their scenes together. It would also explain Mike’s weird behavious towards Will in season 3 & 4 being rooted in internalized homophobia. If you rewatch the show, pay attention to the details and subtext. Then you‘ll realize that everything is building up to them being together. Also the way they wrote Will‘s love for Mike is absolutely not how you write an unrequited love story. That would be bad writing, if that‘s actually their plan.
Don‘t get me wrong. I love Mike and El together, but just not romantically. Mike cares for her so much and I agree that he‘s scared of losing her. However, not because he loves her romantically, but because of his attachment to her. I think Mike‘s arc is about letting go of his need to fit societal standards of a regular relationship (like his parents). And El‘s arc is about finding independence and love with friends and family.
