I'm a weld noob. Starting with a 110V inverter box and building a basket with some 1/2" steel tube. Is building up fillers like this possible on thin material? This tube has like 0.04" walls and I've already blown through it making tack welds. I've blown through it because I'm inexperienced but I'm also curious if It'll stand up to me building up fillets around the 90° tube joints. Yea, I coped out the tubes at the joints.
In Welding School many years ago. We were given a 4x4 1/2" plate. 7018 to make as close as we could a 4x4 cube. Then sawed in half to look for slag. Then the whole class was given a 10 pound can of rod and made a fillet weld. Was taught to keep our hoods down....
That whole last part made no sense, why was the whole class given a 10lb box of rods? And for what? 10lbs isn't enough for a whole class and who made fillet welds and why? And why did you have go keep your hood down? What was the outcome of the slag in the cube test?
@@jackmioff000 I meant each student got a ten pound box of rod. And that while welding it is needed to keep your hood down to get something done. We took turns welding. The cube test was to learn uniformity. Those that tried to hurry had slag and porosity. And to learn to take your time clean and inspect each pass. We were all just learning to weld
I love to weld with electrode. I got a feeling this methode is more appreciated in USA than in my country where it's considered as an old inefficient technic barely used on some specific projects. Most of welders in Poland works on flux core CO2 shielded MAG or solid wire with NCO2 and Tig on pipes. I wish to weld more with stick 😊 Greetings from Poland
I just picked up some 3/8 thick angle iron from the scrap yard and built me a welding tree out of some 2" and 3" scrap pipe so I can finally start practicing my fillet welds. Cool video, thanks.
Matt -Weldtube - last cartographers,, excellent video, wow flashbacks from when I was learning, used to go through 50lb boxes of rod stackin beads 🤜🏽🤛🏽🦅💯
This is an essential skill when doing "build-up" on large nozzle to vessel joints, pull lugs etc. I always likened it to stacking logs in a corner. Same method can be applied to different processes, SMAW, FCAW & TIG. Can even be applied to sub arc. One thing...with good 7018 and proper machine setting....the stick rod can be angled troward direction of travel and can be pretty much "dragged" along. I know this is a demo....but in the real code world.....NEVER rapid cool, water quench the weld material. Makes the material more brittle and can cause cracking. Retired after 35+ years pressure vessel work.
@@downhilldaddy5282I disagree, welding is a way of meditation, not everyone is calm enough to meditate but welding will sure teach you to. Learned from first hand experience.
what i always wondered about multi pass welding, wether it be stick OR flux, is do you have to wait in between passes ? and how do you know if anything is getting to hot while doing so? if that question even makes sense... thanks!
No waiting. Just clean the slag off and go on to the next. If you're doing this exercise than bring your metal to a quench bucket to cool it off every 7 or 8 passes
Hola amigo .acá desde argentina. Según nuestras normas. La costura de soldadura no puede superar el espesor del material a soldar . solamente un comentario .muy buenos videos .me encantaría trabajar aya!! Saludos desde buenos aires.
Which brand 7018 are you using? I have some cheaper rods I use and I don’t have any problems. But I have some Lincoln Excalibur rods and I have a problem with coating wanting to crack off rods. I don’t have them in an oven. Thanks
Get some 2” angle and cut them into 8” pieces. Tack two pieces together to where you have 4 angled sides. Have the newbies practice like that its great. Doesnt have to be thick angle either. They can practice flat vertical horizontal and overhead with that and itll take them forever to fill
One down 3 over is how I was taught …. I know you can do it however for whatever size weld you’re doing … but for some reason 1 down 3 over looked the slickest… 1,3,5,7,9
Sorry ya'll for a stupid question here, "Whats the reason for a multi-pass bead for out in the field or is there a reason at all. . . .for such a plate?"
Auch!! That's not a root pass. Why weave it? It should be a single string. Finally, you started using the fan: too much weld deposit and uneven passes. The overlap to the previous passes should be tighter. If you place a fillet weld gauge will show the spaces and bumps. But it will hold. At a major structural manufacturer, mmmm.? But it should be appreciated that you are teaching beginners

That was fun, I do this procedure all the time just to stay in shape, Cheers Guys from Florida, Paul
Within 5mins of watching this video I’ve learn a lot!!! Appreciate that!! 💯
My favorite project in weld school is horizontal t joint. Great practice to learn how to melt rods and learn how to really study the puddle
Matt is the man! Like seeing him run instructional vids on this channel a lot! Sweet beads, and very cool cinematics on this one.

Thanks brotha! 👊🏻 🇺🇸
When Matt struck his arc i almost got arc flash through my phone😂

Equivalent to arc strike in grind mode lol

Lol
Funny 😉👉❤️

Great vídeo!!!
Thank you for putting this up I literally just learned what I was doing wrong
Wow. This was eye opening for me! Thank you!

Love the videos. Very helpful
high school we built foul post and we had to weld fillet welds on the base that took 1 week to weld up
Thank you for this lesson.
Mountain of welds so impressive man, I need to learn to weld stick but mig will do for now 🤙🏿🤘🏾
Excellent job sar
Great Content Like Always! 👍🏿
i am always seeing your videos in my hood😀
Talk about how constantly welding warps your metal
Damn i wish my school could afford 3/8” plate for fillet weld practice
Awesome video
U pass straight out or are u supposed to swing in up side to side ? I’m doing it now had some dope passes and some where like wtf did I just do
Well done
Thank you Sir for this video . . . the light bulb came on for me . . . need to purchase some 1/8 7018 rods . . .

Thank you for the video. What size 7018 were you using
1/8”
its a WOWWW !!!😮
Very good
Do vertical fillet welds 🙏🏻
How does a quench tank work?
What does 'welds 16ga to unlimtied ' mean on the sticker of a lincoln ac arc 225 stick welder?
Why are you fast forwarding through the most educational parts? Show us every pass so we can understand where to follow the previous beads.

What kind of stinger do you use?
I used a stinger V in this video, but run an optimum 400 on the rig
So Nice ✌🏻
Should I go to school here, or down the street to pipe fitters local 211 school?
any tips for vert tplate 7018? my horizontal plates look amazing but once its vertical im fucking it up
your running your root passes just in a straight line technique? i just started school an trying to be the best i can possibly can be
Multipass weld . 👍👏👏
Hey good video, very helpful channel, where can I get that texas hood ?
Can I shift to this career even though I'm mild colorblind (green, red, brown)? What is your best advice. Thank you.
Yes you can. Colorblindness will have no effect on your welding.

What polarity where you running on? I’m running on a Old Lincoln Tombstone AC @135 amps.
The 7018 electrode used in this vid usually runs on dc + but i believe Lincoln made low hydrogen electrodes that can be used with ac hope this helps.
7016 runs fine on AC and is also low hydrogen
I can't tell you how many of these things I filled out at the cc
Love it
How do you fix an discrepancy or an over sized weld on that same test
Please tutorial, multipasses in MAG or MIG weld , thanks

I personally don’t care for Excalibur rods, I like esab atom arc 💯
Excalibur is great
Never used Esab atom arc, but Esab OK48.00 are an incredible lo-hi electrode.Restarts are so easy with them.

Still early, just keep at it, and allow yourself to be bad. With persistence, and consistency, you will become good.
