- How did a secret German sect in Chile become a haven for Nazi fugitives and a torture centre for the Pinochet regime?
Forty years after the US-backed military coup that brought General Augusto Pinochet to power in Chile, the truth about the sordid abuses and crimes that took place during his dictatorship are still emerging.
The mountains of Patagonia in southern Chile witnessed a particularly bizarre chapter of the Pinochet era; one that is still claiming victims today.
In 1961, a former Nazi corporal called Paul Schaefer fled Germany, along with hundreds of others, to found a sect in southern Chile. In an idyllic rural enclave framed by the Andes Mountains he created a virtual state within a state - one where horrifying events unfolded.
Initially with the ignorance of the government, and then with the complicity of the Pinochet regime, children were separated from their parents at birth and raised in a Kinder House. Men and women were kept apart and often drugged, while Schaefer systematically sexually abused boys and, occasionally, girls.
It also served as a haven for Nazi fugitives - such as Walter Rauff, the inventor of the portable gas chamber, and Joseph Mengele, the so-called 'Angel of Death' - who were permitted to hide out there in exchange for overseeing sophisticated forms of torture.
All of this took place with the full knowledge of the Pinochet regime, whose notorious intelligence chief, General Manuel Contreras, would often visit the site.
In The Colony: Chile's dark past uncovered, the truth about what took place inside the Colony is revealed through the story of Winfried Hempel. Now 35, Hempel was born into the Colony and raised there without any knowledge of who his parents were. When he first left its grounds, he was 20 years old, spoke no Spanish, had no notion of the country in which he lived and had never seen a television, computer or mobile phone.
Although he initially struggled to adapt to the world beyond Colonia Dignidad, he gradually learned to speak Spanish, received his high school certificate and eventually qualified as a lawyer.
Al Jazeera's Lucia Newman has followed the story of the Colonia Dignidad since 1996 - at one point even being turned away from the site at gunpoint. As a Chilean, she wants to expose the crimes that took place there - crimes that her country was not only complicit in, but an active participant to.

Appalling that the Colony is being turned into a tourist attraction. It should be a museum to remind humanity of the atrocities that we are capable of. Justice needs to be had.

The fact that the German Embassy in Chile gave Schaefer diplomatic status proves that it was complicit in his crimes against humanity.
Which is why both the individuals directly involved as well the entire German government as a whole should be investigated and held accountable for what happened, the German government in particular for directly supporting active Nazis and their criminal enterprises.

As I understand, the current Chilean rulers still owe much to Pinochet and his awful dictatorship. And still have ties with many of the former army brutes who abducted, tortured and killed their own citizens. Sad to say but I am afraid that your country is still very corrupt. It will take at least a generation or even two generations before Chili can really come to terms with its past, if ever. Just look at Spain and the legacy of Franco. It is very similar to your recent history. In Spain as well, there are many people owing their wealth and privileges to, basically, an absolute scumbag. I was in Chile in late 90’s with a Rotary exchange of young professionals- one of our sponsor couples spoke fluent English ( most did not) and gave us a shocking accounting of how untouchable this place was. I first learned the name Paul Schäfer at the age of eight, when my family moved to a new place in Germany. There he had done a lot of damage to the christian community, but nothing in comparison with what he did in Chile. This is the best report on Colonia Dignidad that I've ever seen! As far as I've read Shafer was a stretcher-bearer during WW II, not a nuse or a medic, as they say here or in other places.

Truly shocking. I praise Al Jazeera for this very important documentary and for the survivors and journalist for bringing the story to the masses. I hope that the court case is successful and the survivors finally get the justice they deserve. Thank you Al Jazeera for telling a truth that other media outlets and our own government shy away from. Love to be able to watch this Channel. It is refreshing to see true and fair journalism. I grow up in Chile and from an early age I heard stories about Colonia Dignidad and Nazis hiding in Chile but no one did anything. What a shame. I hope that justice will prevailed for all the victims. So sad.

I have just seen the film "The Colony" which is a true story of what went on here. That man should have been executed slowly.
It wasn't just the leader or "the Colony" that was responsible, it was ALL of the adults living there, who supported the abuse and exploitation. All of them were both victims and perpetrators at the same time. That's why they stick together and now continue to live in the same community.
A love for order can be a good thing in the right dosage, but can easily turn into a totalitarian regime, when horrific things are overlooked by everyone just to maintain the appearance of "order".
And chances are these were not random German families who simply heard about this cult and decided to join. These were people who had something to hide and chose to stick with others just like them. The Chilean and German governments definitely have all the info. Heck, the German embassy sent the victims back into the colony when they came for help! Disgusting.

Victims rarely feel justice. There is no correcting such wrongs. Most often legal systems serve to protect the rights of the abusers, instead of the victims.
Speaking as a Bible believer, those who claim to "follow the Bible" often take it out of context and twist verses to make it say what they want.
I agree! I'm not even a Christian but condemning the Bible because of all sick people that used the Bible for their own benefits is completely wrong. I actually love the new testament and believe in God. But as you said a lot of people take things out of context.

Let’s start by saying the reporter did a superb work. This was a subject that always intrigued many, but the secrecy was hard to overcome. I hope all the victims are compensated accordingly sooner than later.
I'm so sorry people have to live through things like this that seem so unimaginable in the western world. I doubt they will ever receive justice, but hope they can find some kind of peace. It is hard to believe that kind of evil exists but more and more of it keeps coming to light. Win your lawsuit.
What? The death tolls were far greater in dictatorships in Europe. By comparison Pinochet is one of the least bad dictators in history. He saved his country from Marxist revolution & turned it from a tin mining colony of the US into the richest per capita nation in South America.
I agree. It's sad that poorer countries don't have the resources to persue these lawsuits and even when they do, they face such corruption that the lure of some cash will persuade officials to look the other way.
It's easy to forget that there are places in the world where justice is not being served.

We have this happening right now in 2021, at a little place called Gloriavale in the South Island of New Zealand. People have been trying to escape for years but the control over these people is just the same as in this documentary.
