I'm 78% Scottish but live in N. ireland, and i love Julie Fowles,
My sister was killed a month ago. I cannot find words to describe the grief. My mate sent me an email 2 weeks ago and today I realised there was an attachment with it. It was a link to Julie Fowlis' "O Sister" You Tube clip. I've just been sitting here mesmerised by this woman's beautiful voice and music in song after song. It is truly music for the spirit and soul. All I can say is thank you so very much.

A selection of verses from an old traditional song, the lament of an each-uisge whose human lover has deserted him, leaving him with a child he doesn't know how to look after (and probably couldn't look after even if he did know how). (Generally an each-uisge in the old stories would be a dangerous monster, but in this song he's a deserted lover).

Julie’s comment in an interview for this album, where she talked about music and language being connected to the land of a people really deeply struck me.
It made me realize the loss of self-understanding and heritage that unguided modernism and “change” brings to the world.
Some of the most meaningful and beautiful music is that I’d ethnic sounds which has had centuries of history and stories as is foundation.

I almost don't know what to say... my late father was from Milovaig (Mìlolabhaig) in Skye... a proud Gàidhlig speaker and excellent piper.... my parents moved to New Zealand in the early 50's.... so I never appreciated his enthusiasm until now... which is too late to share with him .... I've started my Gàidhlig journey just now and your music Julie (which I discovered several years ago) digs deep into my soul and being ... dad would have adored your music and I feel grateful that you have shared your talent and beautiful voice and music with us....to keep our heritage alive.... this song is absolutely a realization to me of the power of where I came from.... and a beautiful collection of senses of the spirit of Scotland.... thank you so much !

My father died unexpectedly today. I know that lots of grieving people go to Julie Fowlis’ songs when dealing with grief, so here I am. I feel like this song helped ease me into my grieving process, instead of me suddenly being thirst into it after days of shock and denial. Julie’s emotional music really does wonders for the soul.

I am a 64 year old rock musician in the U.S. and cry, at times uncontrollably when listening to Julie. Her voice /songs pull at my heart and soul like nothing ever before. A metamorphosis? I grew up on KISS.. was a total 80's hair band freak...then God in His infinite mercy crossed my path with the venerable Irish fusion group IONA.. and then it just branched out from there to where I can honestly say if I were on a deserted island with a jukebox capable of playing one genre of music, without a doubt it would be in the Celtic vein...
I still get a "fix" now & then with Yes, Styx, heck even KISS once in a great while...but putting on stuff like Julies music, feels like a cleansing of sorts, and my soul then breathes again..

What an absolutely bloody gorgeous video (and song, of course.) I've been watching TH-cam for many a long year and have never seen a better one. As for Julie Fowlis, I've been listening to her for many a long year, too, and she never fails to enthrall.
Melody is what connects people. The sound and the specific vibration levels, words just add meaning to the melody. That's why we cry when listening to a tune we have no idea what's it actually about. I've experienced it so many times with Gaelic songs, Chinese songs, Mongolian, Slavic... Cultures that have a rich history of folk music. One might say it's in our collective mind. However, you want to understand it, it exists and its unique and i wish we had more of it in this world. Not everyone is open to these emotions, maybe even most people aren't. So much sadness in the world, anger, resentfulness... It'll all be ok once we're gone... Thanks for the lovely song. Peace V

Thank you, for these beautiful and precious songs even though I am an Asian but I fell in love with Gaeilge songs since I was 14 years old. It's not uncommon for me to sing through a mix of gaelic and Indonesian in one song. I cried when I heard this 5 years ago. And still because it really touched the deepest part of my heart.

I loved to read this! I have always been fascinated by Southeast Asian and Oceanic musical styles and histories. Sometimes I’ve wanted to sing in Gàidhlig along with various regional music styles 😂 I’m so glad to know that there’s people out there who like our musical styles and take an interest in the Goidelic languages! Although I’m Italian by birth, my lifelong attraction & love for Gallic/Celtic song and culture are so strong yet unexplainable... then I learned that my deceased & beloved mother was adopted into her Italian family ... we don’t know her true roots, but we suspect she was a child from the northern regions of Scotland or Ireland.
I too, am Italian. I have strong attractions to all the musics of Europa; form my native Italian and Spanish, to the ballads of the Celts, and the folk of the Norse. Europa is beautiful in its entirety.

In the year since, over 570,000 people worldwide have registered and I am one of them. I love it! One third reside in Scotland, one third in the United States, thousands in Canada and the remaining thousands scattered throughout the planet. Maybe, just maybe the language and culture will get a huge boost as a result.

Congratulations. You are blessed with a virtue that can lead you to an understanding that few people have. My extracurricular studies have revealed some very, very, VERY interesting historical facts - namely the intrinsic connection between languages we know as "Gaelic", "Old English", "Saxon", "Old / High German" - and - ( are you sitting down? ).......ancient Hebrew. !!!!!! I know! Super - WOW !!!
Even the way traditional Celtic, Gallation and Phoenetian language from long, long ago ( "phonetic", yes Sir - there you are... ) resembles in some remarkable ways to ancient languages of what novices like me have been taught are the "first peoples of the Americas".
Case in point: ( this should really rock you ) a priest / ambassador from a recent Roman Emperical period was tasked with searching out communities in what is now known as "Northern Europe, The British Islands and the Scandinavian Peninsula". As his journey progressed his reports back to Rome held a growing number of key bits of information. Namely, often, written language and codex type symbols that in a remarkably similar way to ancient hebraic language - articulated the "Names ( characteristics ) of THE CREATOR".
About 1000 years later....the apparent "new-comers" to the Americas discoverd remarkable similarities between "aboriginal people" and the ancient knowledge of "The Name of GOD". On stone tablets, etched on stone walls of caves, in ancient sites where "worship of The CREATOR SPIRIT" was conducted, etc, etc.
Summary: the modern "English Language" is the direct decendance of the language spoken by the Father of Abraham, Issac and Jacob.....
So.....in song how are we governed? Answer: by our spirit, our feelings, our interpretation, as it were. If our minds and hearts are on the "things of GOD", the we will not only imagine how beautiful the language spoken in Heaven will be like - but also how connected all people today - known as to some: "The English-Speaking Nations of The West".
There is a very real and 'good' reason why a certain kind of music resonates with certain people. Imagine how beautiful King David's music might have been - with his immense faith and the immense Grace he received from GOD. Imagine the most humbling and mesmerizing voices of modern / traditional Celtic / Gaelic music voice talents - singing King David's Psalms.......
there would be "rock music" all right. Songs that would truly "move mountains".

So beautiful and sad. Thank you, Ms. Fowlis. Hearing Gaelic sung always evokes deep feelings in me. My father had lost the Gaelic but was able to remember a few lines when he sang us lullabies. His ancestors were from North Uist. “Yet still the blood is strong, the heart is Highland/ And we in dreams behold the Hebrides.”
I work in London everyday. Grafting my life away on the tools. Been doing it everyday for 20 years plus now to support my kids. Nothing special I know. I come here at night to remind myself it's worth it.

My bilogical grand father immigrated from Scotland. I sadly never met him. This song for whatever reason touches me to the core. I have no idea what she says, but tears swell up from within. I love Julie's voice. Her voice and the voice of Agnetha Faltskog are truly the voices of Angels.

Scottish and Ireland share roots and are similar in some aspects, tho, not so sure how similar.
Perhaps it would be as Spanish and Portuguese(?

@@Egg-zactly typically Scottish Gaelic is referred to as Irish while Irish Gaelic is just referred to as Irish. Gàidhlig was based off Old Irish from what I've heard.

music is indeed extremely powerful: and it's entirely plausible that Celtic DNA plays a role, for those who have the bloodline at some point.. Imagery...music.. it can weave a spell to be sure :)

I know a wee bit of the Gaelic, but not enough to understand the song. That does not detract from the utter beauty of the song, music and Julie's voice. Gaels could sing about going for the messages and I'd still be under their spell.
