Treking poles: if you are use to using them, BRING THEM! Especially if you have knee problems. They really save your knees on the downhills. If you have time before your trek, & wondering if you should use them or not, start training with them as much as possible.

Just got back from Peru.It was the greatest experience of my life. I loved it. But I wish I had known that altitude sickness medicine makes you have explosive diarrhea. It made things harder on the trail to have to take it. Next time I would try to rely on coca tea and chewing coca leaves.
Go to the Incafarma and ask for hand sanitizer. I bought a small bottle (8 oz?) that contained a green gel that was pharmaceutical grade. My daughter and I used it constantly and never ran out over a two week trip. Incafarma is an amazing, fantastic asset to visit if you need health items.
Very good hiking poles were essential for me. I am 53 and in very good shape but those stairs arent really stairs so much as steep crooked rocks. LOL! Anything to help your balance is critical.
You dont need an expensive hydration pack. A liter plastic water bottle works well enough. The porters can top off your water at the lunch spot.
I carried a roll of toilet paper with me at all times on the trail. I used it often. TP is scarce in Peru. And you DO put used paper in a trashcan next to the toilet rather than flush it. Carry some uno Sol coins at all times. Most toilets arent free.
Go to the market in Cusco that all the locals use. It is a mind bender!!! The locals were all friendly and fair.
If you can find the small flute making shop in central Cusco owned by the large, dark skinned man who looks like the nicest grandfather in the world be prepared to by impressed with his flute making skills.
Do everything slow, slow ,slow at altitude. Absorb the details. We move too fast in the West. Learn to move like the wonderful people of Peru.

Really useful information. As you say everyone does the what to pack but not what they wouldn’t take the next time. I’m going in May next year and will use your information when packing. Thanks.

Interesting video, thank you. I've been doing the Inca Trails (not just the main one) since the 80's, once every year or two. By now, I have completed the main Inca Trail 21 times, the Salkantay Trail 11 times, and a few times the Lares Trail, Ausangate Trail, and the Hiram Bingham Trail.
    (1) headlamp or flashlight? doesn't matter. what matters is how powerful the light is (get a high lumen device, 1000 lumen+ at least).
    (2) sandals are a really bad choice for most of these trails, no matter when you hike them. You need protection from the elements, support, stability, and good grip.
    (3) Sunblock is a must. The Sun burns more intensely near the Equator.
    (4) Hat is good, especially during the rainy season (Dec-Apr)
    (5) I'm very particular about sleeping bags - one type for cold/dry season, another type for less cold/rainy season.
    (6) Trekking Poles are a must on most of the Inka Trails, especially on the way down. More reason to use them if your legs (quads) are not strong enough.
    (7) Baby wipes are very convenient. TP is a must.
    (8) You forgot to mention INSECT REPELLENT, some kind of first aid stuff (meds, disinfectant, etc)
    (9) Sunglasses are also a positive thing to have. Gloves if you do it in the cold season.
I'm preparing for my next trip to Peru in exactly one week. I'll be starting the main Inca Trail on Jan 8th, then I will be hiking the Choquequirao Trail (first time).

You're spending 4 days OUTSIDE hiking PACK SUNSCREEN! Uh.....rent the hiking poles. You won't know until you're on the hike if YOU PERSONALLY will need them. It doesn't matter if you know how to use them or not, there are people who can help you figure them out. Everyone in my group, seasoned and novice hikers, used their poles with the exception of the 3 month pregnant lady and I have NO CLUE how she managed those uneven rocky steps without them! Spend the money and hire a porter to carry your sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and other items you won't need during the day.

It rained on you a lot. I’m going late September and hopefully won’t be as rained on. If you were going in September world you still bring the solar charger?

    • @heyjenniferjones

if you have it already and can spare some room, I would say bring it because nothings worse than not being able to charge your cameras at Machu Picchu!

Thank you! Very useful video. Which month were you there? We will be doing this on July! Your video is so useful! Did you get any chance for at least a quick shower? I am a "city person" and I although I al thrilled about the experience, I am getting "cold feet".

Roxana Sandall thank you! I went in early march so it got a little chillier at night which is why I opted for the baby wipe shower instead. There's no hot water... and when they say it's cold water. Ohhh my goshhh! It was freezing haha
