    • @AleF202
      @AleF202 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      18th and early 19th century European warfare was actually pretty civilized when it came to civilian casualties. During the Napoleonic Wars populated areas were never targeted for slaughter by neither the French, nor the armies of the coalition. Some exceptions, of course, did happen; it is widely known that some of the German states and the Ottoman Turks were particularly brutal in their targeting of population centers, but this was certainly not the norm at the time. By contrast, modern warfare's casualties consist primarily of civilians rather than combatants, and population centers are typically the targets of large scale scorched earth bombardments amongst other such attrocities.

    Purpose of closed formations was to increase the damage of muskets among several other reasons. Muskets in the early 19 century were very inaccurate. Closed column formations were the standard since the 30 years war until Franco - Prussian war in 1871. As the accuracy of muskets rapidly increased (mid 19 c) column formations became obsolete. Prussian Breech-loading rifles proved to be extremely murderous to the Austrian closed column formations in 1866.

    • @inquisitorsteele8397
      @inquisitorsteele8397 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The Dreyse needle-gun that prussian use are actually quite inaccuracy compare musket that the Austrian use as Dreyse has smoothbore barrel and use round ball instead of minie shape ball so it would be very inaccurate compare to Austrian's muzzle-loading Lorenz rifle musket which has rifled barrel and use minie ball. However the sheer volume of fire that Dreyse could thrown at the Austrian was enough to make accuracy issue irrelevant.

    • @musicusaddictus
      @musicusaddictus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@inquisitorsteele8397 @Inquisitor Steele My point was that dense column formations which were still used by the Austrian empire in Austro - Prussian 1866 war started to be obsolete due to the rapid fire and improved accuracy of Prussian breech loading rifles. However effective seal around the breech meant that hot gas escaped after several shots had been fired burning the rifleman’s face while aiming from the shoulder and forcing him to shoot from the hip greatly reducing accuracy. Just to clarify I was commenting the title of this video where 'suicidal formations' is used to describe column formations (I assume) which were improved and used mainly by Napoleon I (later on copied and used by his enemies as well) during Napoleonic Wars. They were not so suicidal due to the inaccuracy and slow rate of fire of muskets.
      "However the sheer volume of fire that Dreyse could thrown at the Austrian was enough to make accuracy issue irrelevant." - yes I agree

      I mean it was multiple wars that changed the musket.
      First was Mexican American war. American soldiers mass use of percussion cap rifles as well as cap and ball revolvers changed things.
      Then the civil war was the first war where most guns are muzzle Loaders to breech loading firearm's becoming popular. (Don't forget the infamous minne ball too).The American civil war is also the war where soldiers went from large lines on open battlefields to relying on trench's, ambush tactics, and early machine guns with the 1862 Gatling gun.
      The Austrian Prussian war was more of the effectiveness of a single shot breech loader vs a muzzle loader.
      People forget the first 2 wars mentioned are really technological wars. In Mexico they expected brown besses and light cannons. Instead they got rifled muskets, and explosive shot by then end.
      In the civil war
      Men started out in large lines of mass formation marching and charging towards the enemy.
      By the end of the civil war we ended up in trench's, ambushes and using early machine guns.

      @@musicusaddictus according to my understanding, the Dreyse Rifle wasn't actually a very decisive factor against Austria. It was highly inaccurate and couldn't actually fire much faster then a muzzleloader, atleast not in the hands of an average soldier under battlefield conditions. The decisive factor of Prussia's victory against Austria was tactical, Austria overextended when fighting the first Prussian Army, so when the second arrived they were badly out of position and got crushed
