I think the reason I felt nostalgic hearing all these Japanese city pop music despite never listen to them before, is because so many retro video games music drew inspiration from it.

In the early 2010's, the Captured Tracks label was home to the forerunners of the lofi/dream pop sound, such as Wild Nothing, Beach Fossils, DIIV and Mac DeMarco. Of course, there was the post-punk revival and garage rock revival several years before, but I feel like indie pop in general was starting to gain traction during the early 2010's. Since that time, the indie pop aesthetic would continue to grow, expanding to fashion and art, and more contemporaries would emerge such as Clairo, Cuco, Boy Pablo and Beach Bunny, to name a few. In regard to this year, I'm uncertain. I have heard from Mac DeMarco that indie rock was declining because of people who only care about money. Oh, and TikTok is notorious for taking songs and ruining them by incorporating them into trends. And we know what happens to trends after a short time. Even Steve Lacy was upset by the fact that some of his fans only liked his music because of TikTok alone. With that said, I will continue to have hope for the future of music.

Ruined… ha, future funk stuff still came out after 2020, as did indie, VaporWave, Retrowave, …. please do yourself a favor, take flight and stop staying grounded to the doomed future, better air up here ;)
I'd always thought the intro to this song sounded exactly like the staman theme from Mario before I heard Dan Avidan mention it was Kondo's inspiration for the very same song. Everything is a spiral lol that made me feel pretty cool inside
whenever i hear this, i just imagine it paired with a montage of luigi sitting around at home, waiting for mario to come back from saving the damsel in distress or whatever, by reading a book, trying to find more things to clean, just laying upside down for like half an hour, and so on. :D
