Great video. I think removing the Plenum is best. I cannot work on my vehicles anymore due to physical limitations or I would have done this myself. My van was getting bad mileage about 15mpg in city, and I wanted him to make sure those gaskets were changed too. Also, these valve covers are prone to crack and may twist a little once removed. So, I had new valve covers changed too. They ran me about $135.00. Also replaced the map sensor and the pcv valve. New air filter and new oil changed. Nice clean job and my milage around city went up to 18mpg and 26mpg on the highway if I keep my foot out of it.
Excellent video AJ, in fact, I have found ALL of your repair videos on the Dodge Caravan incredibly useful and educational. You did a great job of explaining just how easy it is to remove and replace the intake upper manifold air plenum, and much easier it makes it working on the rear of the engine. You have no idea how much help you have been to me. I am replacing the valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, PCV and plug wires this weekend on a 2004 Grand Caravan 3.3L, and have decided to combine your approach together with removing the cowl and wiper assembly, giving me extra room to work and making it even easier to remove that PITA rear valve cover. I'm one of the unfortunate few with 2004 models that have BOTH a plastic and a steel valve cover to deal with, requiring me to purchase two sets of gaskets! Anyway, great job with this and your other videos, keep them coming. Best regards, John.
Thank you for this video, this is the next thing I'm going to do, got some oil spilling a little, my van is from Michigan and I have 262k miles on it, 3.3 liter 2006
Nice Job. It's easier to do the job if you just pull the wiper assembly off, takes about 10 to 15 min if you've never done it before. I think i'm going to do a video on that because I see so many folks trying to do spark plugs, valve covers, O2 Sensors etc., not knowing how really easy it is to get to the back of the motor just by taking the wiper assembly off. Thanks for the caravan videos. I have a 2002 and the van is a maintenance hog for sure. Best Wishes n Blessings Keith
Yes, amazing how much room you get at the back of the engine. Not to mention you can clean out the whole area inside the cowling, wiper arm shafts, clean and lube.
I just did my spark plugs, yes all of them, if my arms were any bigger I couldn't have gotten those in the back, I will tear apart the wiper thing next time it probably to change my valve covers, thank you
👍 good job One of those franchise mechanic shops here in nc Charlotte i wanted to know how much they charge to replace only back valve gasket i changed front one long time ago they say 3 hours job $390 omg. I was like but its only one piece of rubber you put around $390 i told them no it should take me 3 hours too to replace so i went with my own labor working on my car for $20 job done thats it.
I have one of these Dodge minivans. I just replaced the valve seals with the heads on, so I needed to remove both rocker covers and all the spark plugs. The wiper cowling is designed to be easily removable so as to allow easy access to the back of the engine. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to remove it. Doing anything behind the engine is much easier with the cowl removed. You probably spent about as much time removing and replacing the upper intake plenum as it would have taken you to remove and reinstall the cowl. Plus you would have avoided the risk of introducing a new problem into the engine such as an air leak. Why disturb the entire air intake system when you really don't have to?
I have done it both ways and I prefer the way I did it. Just my personal preference. However I think the best and fastest way to do this particular job is to use a person that has long skinny arms and then you do not have to remove anything you just reach through and replace them just like this guy did. th-cam.com/video/CN5yE_O8qdQ/w-d-xo.html Anyway there are a lot of ways to get something done, just take your pick and do what works best for you. Anyway thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. Have a good day.
Those were the upper intake manifold gaskets. You can buy an intake gasket kit for around $20. Here is an example of what it I am talking about. www.autozone.com/external-engine/intake-manifold-gasket?filterByKeyWord=upper+intake+gaskets&fromString=search&isIgnoreVehicle=false I hope this info helps you out. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. Have a good day.
Do the gaskets come with the bolt gaskets too or did you purchase separately? Not sure if they are called grommets. I am planning on doing the repair on 99 Dodge caravan Se and I thank you for this how to videos.
+robert Martinez Both the valve cover gaskets and the grommet gaskets should come together. The Felpro gaskets should be less than $25 at any autoparts store. You will just need to know what engine you have. I believe the 99 versions had the 2.4L, 3.0L, 3.3L, or the 3.8L. If you are not sure what engine you have, just look at the vin number on the windshield or on the drivers door decal. The 8th digit on the vin is the engine code. (that trick works on any car the 8th digit is the engine code) Well, I hope this info helps you out, thanks for the comment, thanks for watching, and have a good day.
Hi. I saw your video and i like it, iam goinn to do by myself. But can you get me a list of the tools amd cleaner you use? I saw a wrench whit 10 an 11 millimetrs, but i dont hear fine the specification for the torc wrench, and the cleanner... can you help whit this? Thank ypu in advance!!!
+Sophia Holmes You are welcome. I am glad my videos helped you out. No you do not have to drain the coolant to replace the valve cover gaskets. You can pretty much replace the valve cover gaskets and upper intake gaskets without having to drain the coolant, but if you go further to the lower intake gaskets or cylinder head gaskets then you have to drain the coolant. I hope that makes sense, thanks for the comment and have a good day.

How do u get the sleeve off to replace the Grommets? I don’t want to break or crack it
You don't need to put RTV on the gasket correct?

Where do you live so I can bring my 09 Dodge Gran SXT 3.8 V6?
Sadly, my husband passed away years ago. He would have loved to help. Thanks for watching his video.
How much different is this than doing it on a 3.8?
I have the same question! I own a 3.8 L Dodge grand caravan
