    It's very strange that nowadays about 80% of cars I see in scrapyards are newer than most of the cars that I've ever owned.

    Loved that, but slightly heartbreaking seeing some of those cars! Partly because I like things like the Civic and the Disco in the background, and partly because I kept on thinking "55 plate, that's practically new!" then realising, nope, that's 17 years old. Time is flying.

    Oddly, I have very mixed feelings watching this. I think of who owned the cars, whether it was the 'pride and joy' of some driver, a car someone passed their test in, one that a family had happy touring holidays in, a first car of a young driver, a car that a nurse drove every night to her shift at the hospital and so on. I think of the sadness of a last drive in the cars. A reminder that we invest a lot of feelings in these devices, that they are very much a part of our lives.

      We tend to think of the actual cars of our memories, and of the others,sad but removed from our own cars. I suppose really, when we see a funeral procession pass, we have those same feelings if it is someone that we don't know.

      I never look up most of my old cars since I like to think they're still on the road, even if they most likely aren't. Although admittedly there were a few I've owned that were so bad I would have liked to watch them go to the crusher

      I was in the army in Germany so when I came on leave (free flight) I never bought my car over. When over i would get a car from the Jalopy Corner section of the paper and buy a cheap banger with a month tax and MOT.
      Probably pay about £2 (in the 70s) drive it around for 2 weeks, then scrap it and get £10 or £15 from the scrapper. A lot cheaper than car hire.

  • @smoothmicra
    @smoothmicra 2 ปีที่แล้ว +64

    I watch that and think of the design, the energy, the technology that went into those motors, only for them to be crushed when I suspect so many of them could still be running if they had regular maintenance and a bit of TLC.
    We are so wasteful. My 17 year old Fabia with 173K on the clock ready for scrap? It's just broken in sir! That nasty grabber isn't getting its hooks into my baby!

    • @bentullett6068
      @bentullett6068 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You are correct. If you watch American car channels 100k on a car sounds normal for a car built around 4 or 5 years old. Unfortunately our cars in the UK have a long spell of damp and salty winters to deal with. My SEAT Ibiza I brought brand new back in 2013 is starting to show signs of creaks on the suspension area's and it hasn't long had 2 new shock absorbers and suspension springs. I think the salt is getting into the bushes.

    • @MrNegativecreep07
      @MrNegativecreep07 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Used cars in the UK are so cheap (excluding the pandemic blip) any major fault just made them uneconomical to repair, especially given the complexity of modern cars. Although it is interesting how despite the technological advances, the average lifespan of a car doesn't really change.

      @@bentullett6068 The secret is frequent washing and waxing, that's my experience. I live in Yorkshire and my car lives outside all year round, so plenty of rain and grit to contend with.
      17 years of regular everyday use, the old girl has only a little bit of superficial rust on the rear arches. It once was a common sight to see dads washing their pride and joy on a Sunday, people don't do that anymore. The car wash places use high power jets and aggressive chemicals, there is no love in what they do, and they won't get into the nooks and crannies a caring owner will. Get back out there on Sunday afternoons dads!

      @@bentullett6068 You do have to remember that in the US there are a lot of long, straight, fairly featureless highways, and distances are just far greater on average. Long, easy miles mean cars pretty normally hit 200K+ over there. Here it's largely all short distances, barely warmed up, city driving, start stop, basically all the things that wear a car fast.

    Amazing how many reasonably modern cars are there, to think not too many years ago these would’ve all been somebody’s pride and joy. Somebody would’ve had the excitement of collecting a brand new car from the dealership all shiny with an immaculate untouched interior with delivery mileage and that new car smell, less than 20 years later this is what becomes of most of them, so sad yet fascinating at the same time.
    You’ve just got to love the awesome power of that claw crane just manhandling and tearing the cars to pieces as though they are just toys. This machine is a real leveller, it doesn’t care whether it’s an eco budget hatchback or a Rolls Royce, it just crushes them all as though they are made of tin foil, it’s a real eye opener to think how materialistic we have become and spend literally £thousands on these things yet they really are all just tin boxes that can be crushed within seconds.
    Fascinating video and great hubnut presentation and humour along the way. Thank you!!!

    An oddly philosophical video this. Its strange how we have strong emotions for what is an inanimate object... that these objects become members of the family, friends or in other cases objects of derision even adversaries.
    It'll be interesting to see the bails and engines being reduced to raw materials.... looking forward to the next installment!

    In this current climate I have seen so many car's that get scrapped just because the owner could not afford to repair them. Or can't justify keeping them on the road because they are not using them. The yard I normally go to nothing sits for longer than 2 weeks. Also where I go they don't bother to remove the engine's they just crush them as they are it all melts in a big pot. The other yard I go to they do take engine's out. This was a good upload HubNut

      I knew someone who got an MOT advisory on his Toyota Something-or-other for discoloured headlight lenses. Not a fail - just an advisory. He took it to a garage and they quoted £800 to fit new lenses (apparently the entire front end had to be removed). He reckoned that was too much...so he scrapped the car, right there, fresh MOT and all. A bit of toothpaste would probably have fixed it!

An M reg but still had amber indicators and a tailgate with no grey tailblazer. Yeah we hardly see those anymore. Very clean MOT history except for a fairly recent one where it only failed on wipers. Neat Vid-yo Ian. Over here in the dry of New Mexico & Arizona Cars just don't rust so it's even more "shocking" or "sad" when a Car ect,(depending on what brand,ect you like or where you 'loyalty' towards certain brands lie..)gets crushed. What comes into the yards sometimes IS shocking, however. I have just bought a '61 Vauxhall FD Victor Sedan from a local yard. It wasn't in any sort of 'Danger'...the Owners (same Owner's since 1968..)simply moved it down there and advertised it. I paid $900 for it. ZERO rust of course(it was always garaged..)!

    A fascinating video, but as others have commented below it is rather sad to see these vehicles meet their end. Of course, they have to. Nothing lasts forever, but... there are some cars that are already older than I am probably ever going to achieve so nostalgia etc that leads to keeping some of these vehicle is no bad thing?

    I find it quite funny that you can (and increasingly must in these days) drive around with an explosive device right next to your face, but after you take it out, it becomes so dangerous that it needs special measures to transport...

    One of the last 75's sold in the good old days when we still had friendly Rover main dealerships. Trim level Connnnoisssseur SE CDTi made it the poshest, and most powerful diesel 75, in silver. That exceptionally sweet BMW M47 diesel engine could live on as a service parts donor or (very slight) power upgrade for the 'Hippo of Happiness' Freelander TD4 on Tea-shelf Matt's channel, furiousdriving.

      I have a Conny SE CDTi and love mine, especially when I found out the history when it was made and one of so many in British Racing Green with a Sandstone Leather interior, and I think finding out facts like that makes it more of a connection to you as well.

    When I heard the comment about the new suspension on the Rover, it reminded me that sometimes cars get to a peak of being spent-upon (because their owner sees no reason to get another car) and then something happens that makes it suddenly imperative to get another car. This has happened to me twice - a Suzuki Swift where I shelled out on new drive shafts (absolutely horrifyingly expensive - the garage excuse was that nobody made pattern parts for them) and then the gearbox started disintegrating a few months later; and a Renault Clio on which I'd just fitted two new top-brand tyres and then I crashed it. Lesson for the future - don't put posh tyres on your slightly old car!

    Hubnut destroying the average in this episode. Great little insight into the process of dismantling and crushing a car, I thought you may have crushed the 75 but relief was upon me when you never! Now time to look for 75 parts!

    It was no coincidence that Ian started with the Rover 75; given recent frustrations on planet HubNut, it definitely looked like therapy.
