the greatest 4x4 team ever was Andrew Valmon, Quincy Watts, Butch Reynolds, and Johnson at the '93 Worlds. Ran a 2:54.29 by themselves, broke the record by a second and a half, and included Johnson's 42.9 split
42.9 is faster than the official world record which is crazy, I’m assuming he ran that time due to the head start and gaining a few extra meters at the hand off though. Still a very impressive performance I’m sure it would be at least a 43 mid in an open
I run this it’s not my favorite but it’s one of my best races I run at meets because when you are behind and you have to go get somebody you get it done and you don’t even feel tired because of all the adrenaline

Man, I almost put it on mute because of know it all carol lewis, but the cheering from the crowd, the gun shot, and the announcers make me miss track soooo much even though I was a high jumper!
Nope. The 4X400 record is very safe. In fact, this race was disqualified because Pettigrew later admitted to taking drugs but the current record is only a few hundredths away from this race. The top U.S. guys back in those days never ran together in an indoor 4 X 400 so those recent indoor records don't mean they can challenge this record. The record team had three guys who could all run 43.50 or faster out of the blocks. Maybe now that Michael Norman is starting to run really fast we might see a fast time by the U.S., but this WR is very safe. The average split (the AVERAGE split!!) was 43.57 for the WR. Not even the U.S. has a group fast enough to challenge it right now.
I don't think most people even realize how insanely fast this is. Many runners can't run sub-70, so for these guys to do 400 meters in almost 30 SECONDS less is insane! I can run a 5k in the mid 17s, but I don't think I could break 60 in a 400. These guys were insane!

In sprint relays at this level, the runners are in lanes 4-8 and the other lanes aren't filled to avoid the tight turns at their speed. The second runner came out of lane 5 and just took the right angle from where they cut in down to lane one to make a straight line at high speed. Fastest point is a straight line from A to B.
MJ's form IS different. He has made every coach (including me) reconsider the idea that your back should be straight and your knees high. But this is also getting to be old news: even in 99, as you can see here, he already had followers. The US's lead man ran imitating MJ's form. Sometimes when I am coaching I tell my runners to MJ their back, and they know what I mean. This guy changed a lot of thinking.

ndspeedster still.. USA teams biggest mission in that day was to get that world record. I don't know, but for me it would be more than enough motivation to run as fast as i can.
Dude, it was a race held on US soil with US announcers shown on US television. And the US set the world record. Gosh, it's an absolutely MYSTERY why the Americans were the topic of discussion. Also, I remember hearing something about the Jamaicans at the 1:36 mark, which, unless I failed math, is before the 2:57 mark. Nice, intelligent post you had there, findusfunk.
Awesome race! I love the 4x4! And wow that girl is so dumb "You're in the lead so you can relax"... more like "You're in the lead now the pressures on 10x to keep the lead and run your ass off and not let your team down"
That '68 squad would've beaten them. Remember Lee Evans won gold and was sent home. So he was not on that WR relay. That time would've probably been a full second faster if he had ran. Even without him that WR relay team would've probably beaten them. BTW, I'm a devout fan of Michael Johnson. I loved his dominance of this event and his peculiar running gait made it even more fascinating to watch him break records.
@@TheSolution4Kickz Yes, the '68 team would have won. But Lee Evans was on the team and ran the anchor leg. But watch the 3rd leg, if you want to see where the record was set. Larry James, Villanova's 400m/quarter mile star, who won silver in the Mexico Olympics 400m, a yard behind Evans, with both of their times sub 44 seconds (Evans: 43.86, James: 43.97), increases USA's lead from 15 yds to 40 yds. @MusicSpeaksVolumes The real WR is 2:54.29 which was set at the 93 world champs in Stuttgart, this isn't the WR cause Pettigrew tested positive. And Merritt has a two year ban from athletics for testing positive for a PED called DHEA, but even if Merritt was still sprinting I can't see the WR falling anytime soon. Merritt and Wariner have been on the same 4x400m team since 07 and their fastest time is 2:55.39 which they ran in Beijing, more than a second off the WR.
WR was set with 2nd leg running in 2nd lane way past the 500m mark. Time would even be lower if he cut in on the backstretch where he was supposed to. I don't think anyone should talk about who is "clean" unless you are pointing to clear proof.
@Originalname38 I think it's possible. He may not have been 100% certain, but there are also theatrics involved to get the audience more into the race. Especially a blow out like this one.
Yeah what you do when you get the baton is you get it in your left hand and as you are switching hands you put the baton in between your middle finger and ring finger and you grip it with your three big fingers and your ring finger and pinky rest under it and it tilts the baton back some so it looks like its more fluid with your arm.
They did, but the IAAF removed the record in 2008 after Antonio Pettigrew admitted to doping. It's a really unfortunate turn of events. www.reuters.com/article/us-doping-athletics-record-idUSPEK6263720080812
@phastman99 I understand when running second leg you have to stay in your lane UNTIL you come off the FIRST TURN. But this guy came off the LAST TURN in lane two, meaning that he was running more than everyone else.
@Zolio6I never liked Carol's voice either but I think the your criticism of her stating that the other runners can relax and run their race is way off. what she was saying is true. A more relaxed 400m runner will run faster than a tight runner who is fighting for every stride and then has nothing the last 60m to give for maintaining velocity. I don't believe she meant that MJ would go out and run a lack luster 45 leg, but that they could relax and focus on HIS race phases without distractions.
I think the top speed is now under review given Bolt's new WR in the 100m. The record was based on top speed over a 10m distance. Green and Bailey were running 9.8/9.9 when that stat was recorded. Bolt at 9.6 would appear to have the fastest 10m section but not necessarily.
Carol Lewis' commentary was great jbrumundsmith. She was right on with her comments. That's because she knows what she is talking about. She ran track and also her brother is the Great Carl Lewis - the greatest track and field competitor in history.
@jbrumundsmith I'm pretty sure he actually started focusing on it in 2007 lol. He already holds the high school wr, 45.65, which he set when he was 16.
I don't know if Jamaica could break this but I do know Usain Bolt could have Michael Johnson's record in the open 400 if he trained for it. He is built for the 200 and the 400. He is just so damn fast he can pull off the 100 also. Watch out after London, he will be in the 4x400
'In his mind right now, he's like PUSH PUSH PUSH - Come on turn it over... To name but a few quotes! Every race I see on here where that woman commentates on I feel like pulling my hair out
@Originalname38 He could tell a record was coming because he has been around the sport, and announced so many races for so long he has a feel for it. Probably knows that with 120 meters remaining, you can compare the current time to that of the record time to get a good indication.
@phastman99 It really depends on if he decides to go after it. If he wants to continue the 100 and 200 then he will just be breaking records in those and might run 44s or high 43s. So thats the determining factor. We will see.
@starcraftiskool WRONG! She won a bronze in the long jump at the 1983 World Champs. She competed in the Olympics in 1984, but was ninth, and in 1988, but did not make the finals. The USA, of course, boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics (dumbest decision in history, by the way), and Carol was second at the "Olympic Boycott Games." But that certainly isn't an Olympic medal. Only 29 countries (all of which boycotted in 1980) were competing.
I see, like everybody else, that they set up the WR, so why the IAAF do not recognize this time, and it's still displaying the Sttugart's record? Is it because the GwG?
@BobbySteels7 He didn't hold all of them. He held the 200m, 400m and 4x400m records. Never held the 100m record or 4x100m record, which, I'm pretty sure, are considered sprinting events.
@ranhill With certainty to 8/100ths of a second? I don't think so. That's less than a meter difference (a half step) between a world record and not a world record.
I guarantee Bolt, Powell, Blake and all other sprinters at this level train by running 400-600 meter reps. My high school sprinters do it all already. Gotta build an aerobic base. There is footage of Bolt doing a 400 on here at some meet. Nobody just runs only their event distances in training.
@phastman99 Yeah and there was also a time where people didnt think he would break the 100 and 200 meter records either but they are shattered. And Bolt broke the 100 meter record after only running it during the track season of 2008. I think if bolt focused on the 400m he would break it by a long way.
@BobbySteels7 Johnsons 100 PR was 10.13 when he was a senior at baylor in the late 1980's... the world record ( in 1998- the time this relay was run-) was 9.84 by Canadian/ Jamacian Donavin Bailey. then when johnson got his last record- the 400- in 1999 the world record was 9.79 by Maurice Greene...... ya not 10.13. in your defense his last 100 split in his 19.32 was 9.19.. and he was extremely dominannt and practically un beaten from 1990-2000 which is why he was athlete of the decade.

Michael Johnson slowed up at the finish
I see, like everybody else, that they set up the WR, so why the IAAF do not recognize this time, and it's still displaying the Sttugart's record? Is it because the GwG?
@falky432 I think Carol Lewis should come over to Finland to comment on our track & field events, lol
My right ear enjoyed this video..
Johnson - 43.1
Pettigrew - 43.2
@BobbySteels7 He didn't hold all of them. He held the 200m, 400m and 4x400m records. Never held the 100m record or 4x100m record, which, I'm pretty sure, are considered sprinting events.
The first racer for usa actually beat the world record and passes the baton at 42 seconds
@ranhill With certainty to 8/100ths of a second? I don't think so. That's less than a meter difference (a half step) between a world record and not a world record.
@masanf Usain Bolt split exactly what Michael Johnson split in this race a few weeks ago did you catch it?
i love how MJ just threw the baton at the crowd :)
Pause at 2:44 and look at Michael's face... man was on a mission.
Lol...I think i heard the "leg turn over" 1000000000 times in this video lol..good vid though, 4x4 team was ON POINT loved it...
Why the hell was the second leg running in lane 2 coming off the curve?
Track and Field Dream Team
@erictellez It's cuz two of the people in this race, Young and Pettigrew were later busted for PED's.
Drug cheats as it appears later on
I don't doubt that but I know that Bob Hayes also has that accolade in GWBR.
I never understood why they did not homologate this record and the one made in Germany 1993 is still valid
Jerome Young my track coach 10th-11th grade as sprinter
the guy that ran anchor is all chill afterwards he doesnt even look tired!! thats not fair! after i run the 4X4 im like dead and puking my guts out! :(
YES!!! its crazy cuz they took the WR away and it took 3 years to break
Who got that golden baton Johnson tossed into the crowd?!!!!
Imagine having Usain bolt, michael johnson (durning his running days), Yohan Blake, Asafa Powell and Tyson gay all on the same 4X100 team :O
Michael is a 400 200 runner though. He does not have the explosive speed of a 100 m runner
Michael Johnson is a 400 meter beast. His top speed over 400 meters has yet to be matched. I look forward to the next man that can come close. go Sprint 400 meters and see what I mean. It's the hardest Sprint in the world. Look at Mike's split at 200 meters when he set the 400 record. This Man was a BEAST at 400
@@dvldwg8961 wayde van niekerk has surpassed Johnson tho
