Reason why the game was close was because since the Spurs' big 3 wasn't playing, many viewers stopped watching the game so in an effort to bring back viewers, the officiating was made against Miami so the game would be closer and as we all know, closer games equals higher ratings. Nonetheless, I totally agree with Chris Smoove.
I agree with you partially Chris. You said it yourself . There is no rule against sitting your players out. Greg Papavich saw his player needed a break after a long week of games, & choose to give them their rest against a team who would have only tired them even more. But then again, you're right. People paid top dollar for those seats expecting to see a big game, but only bench players instead. So David Stern was put in a tough situation, & honestly, living in San Antonio, & being a huge Spurs
It makes sense for Pop to do what he did, and here's why. He wanted to assure wins against the bad teams by playing his starters. Resting one of them would give them a chance to lose to a team that they should beat. Now, against the Miami Heat, even if Pop played all those starters, there's a good chance that they would still lose. So essentially what Pop did was guarantee a 3-1 record over that stretch rather than having a good chance to go 0-4. The NBA fined Pop for good coaching.
I went to go see the Celtics play Miami in Boston, the seats were nosebleed and $100, but they were worth every penny, not only was the game absolutely amazing, the atmosphere was electric and the Celtics ended up winning. That was probably my favorite basketball moment I have ever had the pleasure of seeing/being a part of. I think one of the things different about a game against a crappy team and a superstar team, is that atmosphere, its simply indescribable.
I agreed with the points you made and tweeted them. In fact, I made the same argument about the fans who paid to see top players and then saw average guys.
Wonderful point you made. They are resting the stars for the playoffs, and considering that the bench lost to the miami heat by 2 points is a great feat in my opinion, would the fans rather see star players in one game and risk them getting injuries or having a great chance at winning a championship? Great choice by the coach resting his starters. I can understand it would be pretty disapointing being a fan and not seeing them play, but You are their to support a team that you love.
Also, the Spurs starters are 30+ years old or almost 30. It poses injury risks to veteran players. Manu had reccuring knee issues also with Duncan. Again, look at the Heat vs Spurs game. The game was close during the 1st half, the Spurs took early lead then became a see-saw game. Heat pulled away at mid to late 3 quarter and then the Spurs came back at mid-early 4th Quarter then resulted in a Heat win over the Spurs by 5 points. This shows what Spurs bench can do even without their starters.
executed their game plan well. Coach Pop looked out for his guys and their long-term prospects (sports). Stern's schedule had the Heat lined up to dominate on a nationally televised game ("entertainment" not unlike the Globetrotters vs. the Generals). Also, the Spurs did this twice last year ending long road trips, no problems then. In addition, Adam Silver (NBA Commish-in-waiting) addressed this *very issue* last year, said he defers to Coach Pop's lineup judgement, he'll let coaches coach.
Smoove I completely agree with you on the Spurs issue. And you're right, I went to my Knicks vs the Suns game and it was awesome. Even though the Knicks were up by 20 at some points, it was awesome to still see Melo in the game.
He fined the Spurs: 1. Because he rested his 3 old starters, but also young Danny Green... Not to mention they had 4 games previous in that 6 day, 5 game trip where they could have rested. Not to mention, THREE of those games were against Toronto, Washington and Orlando, but he chose to send all the stars home on the big game, on the National T.V. 2. He fined the Spurs because Popovich didn't tell anyone, at all, until game time.
MIAMI HEAT IS BEAST!!!!!they got king lebron, chris bosh and dwayne wade (big three) they are my fav team in the NBA!!!lol anyways lov ur awesome vids on COD,NBA,and all the other great vids!!keep up the great work and ur boss just like miami heat :)
well i agree that he wouldnt have sat them in that particular game but the reason why he sits all of them is so that the level of play of the team drops for one game rather than having it slightly decrease for 4 games
11:40 Smoove paying back those Tony Parker floaters on that Need For Speed video. haha. HERE'S MY FLOATER RIGHT IN YOUR FACE. If Tony did another dolphin dive in this game I would be so hype rofl
Points I'd like to make. 1. People don't pay to see Parker, Lebron, Wade, etc. As an NBA fan there should be a basic knowledge and respect of the game to understand that you paid to see the SPURS vs. HEAT. Not specific players. 2. Yes the Heat have 4 games in 5 days, but the Heat are also a lot younger than the Spurs. 3. It doesn't make sense to rest one of the big 3 for three consecutive games, when you could rest all of them for one game and have the team at full strength for the other two.
Popovich did a basketball move with benching his stars. Despite all of that, the second string made this game competitive. In my eyes, it was just a coach finding loopholes to assist his older team; I see no hurt there.
Now at the same time, Gregg is a coach & his job is to do whatever it takes legally to win. Gregg shouldn't have to give a damn about ticket sales for any venue...even in his own stadium. So I don't blame him for resting his players. And as Smoove said, what Gregg did is NOT illegal according to the rule book. But there are a number of ways this could had been handled. It was reported that Gregg picked the days to give his starters off back in July.
I've seen a Celtics game at home to the Wizards from the 15th row and I got to see Pierce, Garnett, Rondo and Avery Bradley (who went off for 14 first quarter points) last year.
I agree with Smoove. This is the only time Spurs go to Miami in the whole season, and its not fair to those fans to not get to see San Antonio's biggest stars just because Popovich felt like resting them. Not just resting them for that matter, he sent them home in a Southwest flight! they weren't even on the sidelines! Every team, young orold, goes through tough stretches in a season, and they still go out there and play if they're healthy, no excuses. $250K is a lot, but I agree with the fine.
Great points from Smoove. People pay a lot just to see these guys play! And as Smoove said, Pop could have done several alternatives if he wanted to rest his players. He could have rested them on a game that is not broadcast in National TV, he could have rested guys one by one. Or he could just limit the minutes of his players. But no. He chose to rest ALL 4 guys. Disrespectful to fans and to the other team. Most of those who are against the fine, are just probably hating on Stern anyway.
Resting your players for what is essentially an insignificant game to be ready for a game that actually has implications on your season is smart coaching decision. I can't see how fining someone for being a good coach is justifiable.
''What I do from my perspective is from a coaching perspective,'' Popovich said. ''And I think the league operates from a business perspective. And I think that's reflective in the action that they took.'' There's your answer.
I see your point as well. Of course he can rest players, but I think that he`s exaggerating it a bit. And the amount of the fine is of course too harsh, though the players earn a lot of money, the organization as a whole might be affected.
Smoove I'm your biggest fan!!!!!!! Lov ur player and watched all you game plays. Even different games that ur good at like call of duty. Thank u for the videos. :)
Imma Spurs fan and saw no reason to fine them at first. But you do bring up some good points. I thought they should've at least been there as well. And I'd rather see Batman than that Dustman. Not many people can change my mind.
Spurs are an old team so they need the rest. I was disappointed when I found out they weren't playing but I don't think they should be fined. Pop has done this plenty of times before.
To be fair, I could see Pop doing what he did. Miami is an excellent team no doubt, one that could really push San Antonio, and to be honest I'd say Miami would win more times than they wouldn't. He wanted to rest his players because he had already chalked up the game as a loss and didn't want to risk hurting their aging stars. It makes sense, and from a fan standpoint it might be unfair, but for a guy trying to win a championship, he made a good call.
Good job, Smoove. I understand what you're saying but I must disagree(this is rare) Pop wanted to rest his star players because of their next game. He wanted to rest them for the Memphis game. That's a division and conference rival that they NEED to win the season series for. It's likely that they could battle them for the #1 so the Memphis game was a lot more important to the Spurs than the Heat.
I'm with you, Smoove. At the end of the day, sports are entertainment and moves like this kill the league. If everyone started benching their stars in big games, who would want to pay top dollar to see games anymore? Who wants to flip a coin and guess whether Derrick Rose is gonna be on the court tonight? It goes both ways, like you said, what company is gonna dish money on sponsorship and ads when fans don't care anymore cause your stars are resting vs. their big matchup.
Ginobili and Duncan are both in their mid or late thirties now and are getting old. They tire more easily, and the Spurs played 4 games in 5 days during that stretch. They needed some rest.
funny thing is, when the knicks beat the heat by 20 points on opening night some folks were claiming that the heat let the knicks win because of hurricane sandy. That's the most ridiculous excuse I have ever heard. Even Wade's own comments before the game sounded like he knew the heat was going to lose because of the strength of the knicks interior. So it was like his way of making an excuse for a loss to the knicks that he knew his heat would lose. before the game even started...
The manager is the manager. He can do what he wants with his players,he doesnt have to play with them. The stars needed a rest and Pop gave them a rest.A manager's priority and loyalty lies with his players and winning. But is see your point.
I totally see and respect your opinion Smoove. Guys have to realize some people only go to NBA games maybe once or twice in their lives, and to blow big money on a ticket for a potentially crazy game and not get your money's worth is unacceptable. The kind of experience they hoped to gain wasn't as memorable for them because of what Popovich did. My thing is that 250k is a little excessive. I've never been to an NBA game but I hope that when I go I won't be disappointed in such a manner.
but the thing is that the Spurs only lost by 5 and they didn't have their 3 star players while Miami had everyone, that's pretty remarkable. The role players stepped up hugely in that game. Just imagine if the 3 were playing. But I understand your point of view, cause this an entertainment business and people want to see the stars playing and they don't wanna settle for anything less than that, they pay huge amount of money to see them
There is some back story to this situation. It was more of a Spurs Organization vs David Stern issue that goes back a bit. I was under the impression coaches were allowed to coach the team they see fit to progress to the ultimate goal of making the playoffs and winning a championship. Its kind of hard to feel bad for Miami fans when they get to see Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Allen, and company every night. Try being a Pistons or Bobcats local fan! Not exactly in the same boat!
I understand why he fined also because he doesnt want any other teams to do the same, it just messes up the whole game but still thats alot of money being fined
After hearing chris point I agree but I also feel it shouldn't ALL be about the fans and the coach should be allowed to do what he wants with his team. I don't know I can't go one complete direction on this.
That fine to the Spurs is overblown... 250K... Looking at the games that the Spurs played, most were close games or were tough games. Also, they were on the road for those games while the Heat had no scheduled games during that 4/5 day span. Can't blame Popovich for doing what he did... A fine that big is an abuse of power by Stern and the coach decides what is best for it's team...
It`s alright to rest players but you can`t take of all of your starters and not even bench them. You can rest players, but you can`t leave 5 big players out because they need resting. The Spurs are an old team, but they`re also obliged to field their best possible team for at least some time in the game. They don`t have to play the whole game, but they should be in the game if they can. If they can`t stick to that, then the old players will have to retire if they can`t play.
Maybe, but it's pretty nice to see how close the BENCH was to beating us. I don't know if it shows that the Spurs aren't done yet or if we need to step our shit up here in south beach.
There are three things that show the spurs shouldn't have been fined. 1. They were IN MIAMI. The fans that were at the game dont wanna see the spurs, they wanna see wade, james, bosh, and chalmers. Not tim duncan, parker, manu, green, hell even splitter. 2. In that time, they had to play 4 games in 5 days, for 2 straight weeks too. Who knows? Maybe they did need to rest. 3. Smoove said that the T.V. Ratings went down for that game? I did some research and it was a 4.9/5.0. Thats pretty high sir.
Those fans who missed out on not seeing the Spurs stars play will love the choice later when they're competing for a Western Conference Final and possibly an NBA Finals. Well played by Popovich.
I dont agree with the fine because Pop's first obligation is to his team. He knows that his Hall of fame players are not getting any younger. Maybe resting Danny Green went over the top but Pop is a great coach and he knows what he's doing. And for the record, there have been teams who have thrown games and players who have faked injuries in the NBA and nothing has happended to them. If that game was at the Spurs arena that it would have been a problem but not in Miami, they come to see Lebron
I think that was a great point you made, but to be fair James and Wade didn't play either. I believe that the older teams like the Celtics and the Spurs shod
It's a really interesting scenario. Smoove do makes valid points. The NBA is two different things. For fans, players, and coaches, it's a league where the best basketball players compete to be the best in the world (outside of the Olympics). The NBA itself sees themselves as a business (& only a business). So for all that money, advertisements, & tickets to be wasted like that is messed up (but those who watch it on tv, is irrelevant because they not wasting money by watching it on tv).
The thing was, it wasn't just ONE player. It was four of their best players. I don't think it was a good reason to fine them, and I hate David Stern, but it definitely wasn't cool of Pop to do that. I agree with Smoove in that he could've gone about it differently.
I get what you're saying about scheduling but let's be real here the starters didn't even play in the 4th quarter in 2 of those 3 games (the 2 before Miami). So they already should have been well rested Duncan,Parker,Ginobili didn't even play 25 minutes in either one of those games since they absolutely crushed the Magic and Wizards. BTW watching Ray Allen hit a clutch 3 is not even in the same REALM as watching 7 perennial all-stars on the court. Which is why All-Star weekend is so expensive.
when u buy tickets for a game,ur promised a game of TeamA vs TeamB ,ur not promised a spectacular game or watching certain players.some1 already explained it.and ofcourse the other problem is that there is no written rule to fine them.
pop was just doing what was best for his team he always does. it wouldnt matter if they were playing sacramento or the heat he shouldnt be penalized for a coaching decision
yeah, thats my opinion. smoove's thoughts would make sense if the NBA took that money and gave partial refunds to people that went to the game or somethin, but of course they dont.
maybe pop did it as a way of trash talk towards the Heat. As if he thought "this Heat game isn't that important, let our 3 best players and one of our best 3 point snipers skip this game" I think it would intimidate other teams knowing that the other team doesn't take you seriously enough to use their best players.
WHO THE HELL IS DUST MAN?! I PAID FOR BATMAN!!!
EXACTLY

Thanks for supporting the Spurs Chris Smoove! The Spurs don't need to get fined. And The Spurs are my home team.
About time! Thanks smoove, i have been waiting for you to give some thoughts about the nba.
It makes sense for Pop to do what he did, and here's why. He wanted to assure wins against the bad teams by playing his starters. I agree with your judgment on the fine. It feels great to see great stars in action in real life instead of the tv
Dude I followed you since early mw2 videos and I'm still hooked, luckily I love basketball too.
Wonderful point you made. They are resting the stars for the playoffs, and considering that the bench lost to the miami heat by 2 points is a great feat in my opinion, would the fans rather see star players in one game and risk them getting injuries or having a great chance at winning a championship? nice comeback from like 20 points down in the 2nd quarter
When I was a kid I went to a Nets game to see Allen Iverson play... they sat him. Never had another opportunity to see him and now I never will
The pick pocket perk is completely messed up because the patch screwed up the fouling system. You reach once it's automatically a foul.
Good job, Smoove. I understand what you're saying but I must disagree(this is rare)

plus it was still a pretty tight game and the fans get to see their bench almost defeating the heat, the champs, theyr probably thrilled about that

I'm with you, Smoove. At the end of the day, sports are entertainment and moves like this kill the league. Pop sent those guys home because it was their 6th road game in a row. Before that they played 5 games in 7 nights.

I agree I had court side seats right next to the bulls bench and I wanted to see Steve Nash when I was little but he didn't even show up

Greg poppavich- "Coach so hard David stern gonna fine me" that shit crazy
I think that was a great point you made, but to be fair James and Wade didn't play either. I believe that the older teams like the Celtics and the Spurs shod
It's a really interesting scenario. Smoove do makes valid points. The NBA is two different things. For fans, players, and coaches, it's a league where the best basketball players compete to be the best in the world (outside of the Olympics). The NBA itself sees themselves as a business (& only a business). So for all that money, advertisements, & tickets to be wasted like that is messed up (but those who watch it on tv, is irrelevant because they not wasting money by watching it on tv).
Agreed, NBA is now like a business instead of a sport.
The thing was, it wasn't just ONE player. It was four of their best players. I don't think it was a good reason to fine them, and I hate David Stern, but it definitely wasn't cool of Pop to do that. I agree with Smoove in that he could've gone about it differently.
I watched the game and you are right! I couldn't believe it!!!
Def agree with Smoove, the fans deserve a good show for there moneys worth.
You guys won a title the year before. Just started my second season with them and we swept the whole playoffs the season before.
Before smoove's explanation: Why fine Spurs?
After smoove's explanation: Ttttrrrruuuueee
Smoove's a smart guy
Hey Hey Spiderman is better than Batman. That would be an upgrade
people who would go from San Antonio to South Beach just to see a good game between the Spurs and Heat
David Sterns choice to fine the spurs was a good decision. Good Job David Stern
Thats like paying to watch chris smoove but then they show ipodkingcarter. Hahaaa
I went to a Sixers vs Mavs game in Dallas. My dad and I had nosebleed seats, but my brother had a lower level seat. :(
I personally think you can't compare Football and Basketball when we're talking about resting top players
You should give us your thoughts on soccer and the mls final!
pop was just doing what was best for his team he always does. it wouldnt matter if they were playing sacramento or the heat he shouldnt be penalized for a coaching decision
yeah, thats my opinion. smoove's thoughts would make sense if the NBA took that money and gave partial refunds to people that went to the game or somethin, but of course they dont.
maybe pop did it as a way of trash talk towards the Heat. As if he thought "this Heat game isn't that important, let our 3 best players and one of our best 3 point snipers skip this game" I think it would intimidate other teams knowing that the other team doesn't take you seriously enough to use their best players.
