As a Christian lady, thanks for discussing the 2nd Great Awakening... This reminds me of the Pentecostal church my parents attended when I was a kid... Thankfully my biological Mom took me to a church where they taught instead of yelled... Otherwise it may have taken me longer to get saved...

I've been thinking about exploring some Civil War battlefields with my students at some point. Having someone on site makes the idea of an overnight field trip more appealing. Thanks for the offer!

The fact that the teology they preached is so relevant nowadays, really makes you think.

I first saw this picture in my eighth grade history textbook, twenty years ago. Everybody made the disco joke. I had to pause the video to laugh since the joke is still funny.

Actually, Calvinists teach that there is freedom of choice for all, but that until God frees the will (that part of us which wants, I.e. desires, good or evil ) we will never be able to choose to love God and the good, because our will drives our choices (This is super clearly explained in Luther's Bondage of the Will)

What about Presbyterians?? I'm Southern & I'm a Presbyterian... There are many Southern Presbyterians... Condoleezza Rice- former Secretary of State- is a native of Alabama (where I'm from & currently reside) & she's a Presbyterian (she was raised Presbyterian)...

Helpful. Thank you. However, I'd like to point out with regard to the first Great Awakening that, while Edwards and Whitefield were Calvinists, the Wesleys were Armenians. And Whitefield and the Wesleys were great friends and allies, though they disagreed on that point. With regard to the second Great Awakening, it's important to remember that it's inception is usually traced to James McGready, a Presbyterian. So while I understand your point, the contrast between the two awakenings being Calvinist and Arminian respectively might be a bit overdrawn.

Most evangelicals are Do not read the Bible! You misunderstood Calvinism. In our God’s perspective, He already has chosen the elect. However in our limited perspective we have to believe Jesus through whom we are saved. That is where faith comes in to depend on God’s promise that if we believe that Jesus paid the penalty on our behalf, we are saved. The assurance we have is that Holy Spirit will carry it until completion until the day of Christ Jesus. This is why we can say we are saved by grace, not by works so that no one can boast. Please read the parable of the weeds, weeds do not become good seed nor good seed become a weed. Jesus also explains the parable that God planted the seed in the parable.

Ive taken a few bible classes and have spoken with a few pastors and biblical scholars about the verse in the bible that mentions reprobation. Or, a reprobate mind. One aspect is actually referring to those who have experienced the love of God and walked away. They now have a reprobate mind, and will never return to the love of God. Its literally one of the worst marks a Christian can have. Bc essentially it means you can lose your salvation. Ask a preacher if one can lose their salvation and often they will bring up this verse. Some debate over that but essentially a reprobate is the a very demeaning term to a Christian.

Your discussion of Calvinism was perhaps a bit simplistic, but that is okay. Do you know what TULIP stands for? You seem to come from a more Arminian point of view. Was your family Baptist? :) The main difference between Calvinist and Arminians (as I see it) is the "Sovereignty of God" issue and the nature of free will. Calvinist implicitly concede to a certain amount of free with or they would not bother to preach at all. In the Great Awakening Presentation that you make don't forget George Whitefield. Also remember there were some itinerate Presbyterian preachers in the Carolina Piedmont. Note the Pietist and their influence. Also, while the Great Awakening was going on in England there was the Methodist reform movement with Wesley. Wilberforce was influenced by this movement and was the leader of the English abolitionist. Movement. Sorry, I'm going long. I love history.

I go into TULIP in my Introduction to Calvinism lecture. I'm not really meaning to adopt any particular point of view here. Keep in mind that these videos are for students taking survey level history courses so they're not meant to be comprehensive, but I will definitely hit our friend Whitefield when I tackle the First Great Awakening!
