- This was maybe the first Dylan song I learned to play, at least the first with an intricate fingerpicking backup, back when he used to do such things. I love the harmonica for this song, but I look so dumb in a horsecollar I just can't do it. So anyway, here's tonight's quickie: one mike, one unplugged guitar, one voice, one camera, one take, one ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. No, wait...scratch that last part.

@coolanddark Hmmm...how to do this. OK. The odd Em9 Dylan uses and I use sometimes to begin each line
is: mute the 5th (if you wish); 3rd fret 2nd string and 4th fret 4th string, and let the dissonance between G and F# stay in; then to a D9 with F# in the bass. The other E9 I use (Dylan does not) is made by 4th fetting the 4th string and second fretting the 5th, again using the G/F# dissonance.

I have been listen to "folkalley" internet radio station and hear this song quite often as a duet between Bob amd Johnny Cash.

You seem to be referring to the D7 chord wherein I fret the 6th string on the 2nd fret with my middle finger, the 3rd (g)string on the 2nd fret with my ring finger, and the 2nd string on the first fret with my index. I generally don't use the first string at all in this formation, but it can be played open to make a D7+9, or fretted with the pinky at the second fret to complete the D7. Hope that helps.
