Once a few years ago I had so much trouble finding women's black pants with decent pockets, and also weren't made of lint-magnet fabric, that I got a pair with fabric I liked and took it to a tailor (the kind of place that also does dry cleaning, not a posh dressy one) to get better pockets put in.
Sadly I have zero memory of how much I paid and the price has likely gone up since then anyway, but that IS another option.

The thing is that men wouldn't buy pants without pockets while women do.
Men in general try on pants and stick their hands in the pockets and if they don't fit in there men don't buy them. You hear a woman in this video admit she have some pants without pockets, so they simply sell pocket-less pants to women whereas such pants would stay in the store unsold in a store for men.
On average women goes for fashion over function and men goes for function over fashion. That's why they can sell pants without pockets and small pockets to women but not to men.

@@icarusgaming6269 You would be surprised by how many objects underwent this process in history. In archaeology there is the whole concept of things that lost their function throughout history but their form got retained in some form or another as a kind of ornament on later objects. Up until the point that no one even remembered what function that was originally but everyone just accepted that this ornament should be there out of habit. It's prominently visible in some tools and pottery.
Pockets in women's pants are right in the middle of that process right now. They get smaller and smaller and sometimes disappear into a mere ornament without function already. Just because people expect something of that form to be on that place of the pants. Maybe in the future the concept of pockets will be forgotten completely but abstract bow-like ornamants will still be sewn to the upper part of space pants.

The people making them typically only do a few highly efficient tasks each, which they could do with closed eyes because they have done it thousands of times. I know I do. pockets are love. pockets are life.

TBF, men’s pant sizes are also somewhat arbitrary, despite claiming to be the waist size and the inseam length. Especially the waist size. If I measure my waist and buy pants based on that number, they will absolutely be too large. How too large? 🤷depends on brand and style. A pair of 32/34 pants will be smaller than 34/34 in the same style from the same brand but other than that, we can’t go by raw numbers alone. Shirt sizes (collar and sleeve length) tend to be more accurate though.

"This pocket is bulging through my jeans even though there's nothing in it!"
Women to this day do the exact same thing with underwear. The whole "visible panty line" thing. The underwear ruining that silhouette is the whole reason "no show" panties were invented.

As a man who loves their big pockets this is a reminder: The answer is increase women's pockets, not to shrink men's or average them out.
It's kind the minimum wage argument: The answer is to increase those who are lacking in the resource, not to decrease others.
Edit: The fact that both of the books you found about pockets were written by women.... That says something surely. Men don't think about pockets because we have enough, but if women are talking about them that's just straight up an indication there's an issue. I've heard for years the (from what I understand, true) rumor that companies intentionally lie about women's pants sizes to cater to women with body issues. I had to learn the hard way that just because men's sizes are more consistent doesn't mean that they are _totally_ consistent, or that they map to anything real. In the before times I would shop for new pants by taking a selection of sizes close to what I'm already wearing and just buy the size that fits. During covid however you couldn't use the changing rooms. So I had the idea to measure myself and buy an entire wardrobes worth of pants using those measurements under the assumption that the sizes were in inches. Every single pair was 2 to 3 sizes too big. The craziest part? The leg length was totally accurate.

The theory I have been running with - you can see when Taha fills his pockets what people mean by "ruining the line of the clothes" when you fill pockets. It makes clothing unflattering when you have bulky items in your pockets.
The sexism of the pocket problems is that clothes makers for men presume men can decide for themselves if they wanna make their figures look good or not, it is up the the men to decide whether or not to use the pockets. But clothes makers for women don't want their clothes seen on frumpy looking women with lumpy things in the cargo pockets.

Well said, ma'am. Indeed, a large portion of industrial pattern makers are male, but most homesewers are women. So a lot of commercial women's garments are tech designed and graded by males, who never would wear those design and are ignorant toward how much they suck at doing their job.

    • @GeneralNickles
      @GeneralNickles 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +49

Dear God, why does everything have to be sexist?
It's cost savings. Basic economics. No sexism involved in any way.
The clothing companies noticed (through spending millions on market research) that women didn't want to put anything in there pockets (for the exact reason you just stated), and so they decided it wasn't financially worth it to bother putting the pocket in to start with.
Pockets aren't free. They don't just appear on a completed garment. The material and the labor of sewing it on costs money. Sure, per pair, it's a tiny cost, but multiply that out to hundreds of millions of pairs of pants, and it's not hard to see why they'd decide to leave out a feature that the majority of there customers aren't going to use anyway.
Men's pants retain there deep pockets because that same millions in market research showed that men actually use them.

The main difference, I think, is that you have the option to put any of those things in your pocket at any given time. Like, sure, you're not going to put a water bottle, a bag of snacks, and a controller in there, perhaps. But your phone, your keys, a pen, your wallet - THESE things are unreasonable to put in your pockets. And the vast majority of women's pants can't hold ANY of those things alone, much less combined!
Like already the fact that you said you had your phone and keys in there is a flex on ladies' pants 😹 I'm a part of the backpack crew, but there are times where ALL I NEED is my phone, and I'd like to leave my bag at home since it's just extra bulk. Aside from details like spikes and useless belts, the general design of most punk-style pants is a holdover from the original design for cargo pants, pants designed specifically for British soldiers to carry the supplies needed for a long trip on foot. Your fashion sense definitely impacts how much you need to alter clothes to carry what you need in your pockets.

I've found higher waist pants for women sometimes have bigger pockets, but in general I feel like women's pockets are limited because the designs often focus on being figure-hugging rather than... not, I guess. Men's pants tend to fit more loosely, so there's room between the pant and the leg for the pocket items, if that makes sense. Like even if our jeans pockets are the same size, my husband can fit my bulky inhaler in his pocket almost invisibly, but for me it sticks out as a big lump in my pocket because my jeans fit so close to the body.

Purses were *also* originally unisex. It's important to note that basically all of men's clothing is the Unisex version, like T-shirts come in Women's and Unisex generally. That said, it's partly fashion; men's clothing tends to prioritize function (and every time one more dedicated to fashion comes out it tends to get a lot of blowback for loss of function, like skinny jeans which still have better pockets but they tend to suck to use), and women's lend themselves heavily towards aesthetics. A thing about pockets, if not wearing Fairly Loose pants, is that stuff in the pockets REALLY screws up the shape and look of the hips/thighs. An interesting thing that might be of interest to look at in a similar vein is the spread of options for men vs. women in terms of clothing readily available, the joke about men having just one outfit is often nearly true, because there are no real other options.

I'm a boomer and a man. I remember when retailers were trying to push men away from pockets. Sewing closed pockets in suit jackets and making the pockets in all kinds of pants smaller. Simply, we men demanded the sewn up pockets be opened and most of us refused to buy pants with tiny pockets. Women do have options, there are pocket dresses, there are cargo pants, women have far and away more clothing options than me, but most young and youngest women want tight shapely pants with no pockets for their power over the minds of other people. Pockets are secondary to mind control.

To be clear, back when retailers were trying to sell us men pants and suits with no or smaller pockets, it was "how it looked" and "cleaner lines" that they mentioned as sales points.
With exceptions, women do not want baggy pants, they do not even want pants loose enough to accommodate men's pockets with stuff in them. (Remember, pocket size doesn't matter if the pants are too close fitting to allow the pockets to expand and hold stuff.)

Except that I lean a bit into techwear and had shorts with a total of 10 pockets, the smallest (!) of which can hold a phone, and the largest of which could easily hold a nintendo switch + controller or a 1L water bottle. To say she was devastated is an understatement.
EDIT: Since people have been asking I just want to preface the following by saying: In the techwear space there are many good companies that will sell you a great pair of pants/shorts for a reasonable price with a good amount of pockets! I think there is another factor. Womens pants are usually tight around the hips and thighs. This means that the pockets are not meant to be functional since putting anything in them would make it look bad. In mens pants which are loose around the hips and thighs it doesn't matter.

Sabrina, I love the pants you made! They look fantastic. Sewing is such a great hobby. My aunt and I (mostly my aunt) made a pair of pants for me that has super colorful stripes, and I wear them out if I'm feeling particularly chipper. When you sew for yourself, you get so many more options. The first time I encountered water-resistant fabric I was like, wait, I can make myself a raincoat?? The possibilities for both practicality and creativity in sewing are *chef's kiss*
My assumption going into this video was that pants producers cared more about the silhouette, and I guess that wasn't too off-base? I stopped carrying a purse around college after temporarily losing it IN MY OWN CAR. Now, I just carry a thin fabric wallet. I mourned having to downsize a little, but I'm not carrying the worry that I'll misplace a bag. I kind of like winter simply because I get to use coat pockets instead of trying to shove my phone into a pocket that was clearly not designed for it. Maybe I'll have to make myself a pair of external pockets for the summer - those are actually rad and I can't lose something that's physically tied to me! (I would hope, lol)
    Great video, as per usual!

Button down t shirt with an inside pocket. You can wear that over a tank top as a sun protector/outer shirt on summer days, and that will give you an extra pocket for the phone. Also palazzo pants with deep pockets if you don't want to have cell phone radiation close to your boobs/chest just to be safe.

The thing I have noticed - women's pants usually have pockets that end above the thigh crease. Therefore, sitting with things in those front pockets can become more uncomfortable if the pocket extended down to the thigh, given how snugly women's pants fit.
And while I agree with the "silhouette" notion overall - I also note that women's leggings often DO have large pockets. They're just on the outside of the thigh, rather than at the waist. So having full pockets generally won't affect how people sit.

When I leave it's wallet, keys, phone. I pat on each pocket to check done. If I have a purse, I physically have it, but I never check inside because my physical memory only needs to feel that a purse is there. But I wear eddie bauer women's jeans which have ok pockets but can't really comfortably hold my inhaler or sunglasses. So I just do without. Contrast this with something like running or swimming where everyone who does the same event professionally has the same body type. Man usually have lower sitting pants. That means a straight pocket found in jeans will be mostly below the line where your legs bend. It makes it still possible to hold stuff in there while sitting. Men pants that sit higher have slit pockets which are usually also deeper to allow for the same comfort.

@@hazelcrisp Im sure there are some out there, theyre just niche and expensive because they dont sell well. Stuff is only cheap when its mass produced, and if it doesnt sell well, it wont be mass produced, and thus expensive.
Watching this video, its clear to see that the reason for this divide is because of fashion trends between men and women's clothing.
Most people care a lot about fashion trends, and that influences what they buy. Now, im sure there probably could be some somewhat successful line of womens pants with reasonable pockets. I am a little surprised no business has tried to do it on a larger scale, as there obviously is some demand, but I doubt it'd sell as well as many other women's pants.
This is especially true, because stuff like skinny jeans are a lot more common among women. These designs dont allow for big pockets. Ive worn men's skinny jeans before, and they had pretty small pockets. These days i only wear baggier relaxed fit jeans.
Now we can discuss why certain fashion sells better than others. There obviously is some sexism involved with the culture that has festered these differences. But that ultimately is the reason why there is a difference. Its because a lot of people in general would sacrifice utility in favor of fashion and aesthetic. And due to how women's fashion is, that results in smaller pockets.
