    cEDH Niv-Mizzet is a deck a lot of casual Commander find themselves building towards, intentionally or otherwise, and this week I'm joined by Shauna Gilles to help new players learn to effectively pilot Niv at the highest power level. Shauna goes over the general gameplan of the deck, how important a good start is, and how the deck looks to win. She then goes over how it stacks up in speed against the rest of the format, and how powerful it can be once properly setup. Shauna then touches on some of the key mistakes she sees new players making, and things they should be willing to do to find success. She then gives some general mulligan advice and takes a look at some sample hands and how she would mulligan them. Lastly, she goes over some of the tougher matchups and when Niv is at his most effective and gives some closing thoughts on the deck in new hands.

    Great video shuana well spoken and well organized
    I’m thinking about building niv but my meta is so creature heavy
    Kraums, Najeelas, winotas korvolds
    Etc.
    I’m kind of considering sneaking in some extra sweepers
    Earthquake, anger of the gods etc. but wondering if that’s a trap
    Not sure yet, anyways… content was great thanks all

      Because of lack of tutors I’m guessing?

      @@johnweinhandl8890 she mentioned to me during the full interview she doesn't like running back up win conditions because they tend to be dead cards most of the time, and Niv and Twister more often than not gets there.

      I can't speak with her level of experience, but if I was in your position I'd certainly try out some extra sweepers if there's that many creature decks. I think in general they're underplayed in the format.

    Is there a certain mulligan rule cEDH uses or does it use what the other magic formats use? I thought you could no longer keep certain cards and shuffle others? Specifically referencing the example hands section.

    • @LemorasCards
      @LemorasCards  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It uses the same rules as Commander, which is the London Mulligan rule but with the addition of 1 free mulligan aka a second seven.

      Once you've drawn through most of your deck, you can either use time twister or a card like valakut awakening to restart.

    With all the caveats, it feels like this video should be titled "Niv-Mizzet: Learn why NOT to Play"

    • @LemorasCards
      @LemorasCards  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think it's really important to note the weaknesses a deck can have when deciding if you want to pilot it. It's not helpful to pretend this deck is just as powerful and versatile as the top contenders, but it offers a unique gameplan and a powerful late game engine that, if you look out for the things that can trip you up along the way, can take over pods even with those safer decks.

    • @LemorasCards
      @LemorasCards  ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video, but this just made my mind on NEVER going into cEDH... it is more disgusting than the average Pioneer or Standard strategies... definitely cEDH is a pay to win...

    • @LemorasCards
      @LemorasCards  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      cEDH is extremely proxy friendly, you're very unlikely to find a pod where they won't allow you to use proxies. A common sentiment in the community is that they want to play against you, not your wallet.

    • @LemorasCards
      @LemorasCards  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I personally at this point almost exclusively use proxies for my decks, they look way cooler and cost pennies.

    • @dearestdoppio8554
      @dearestdoppio8554 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      All cedh players are open to using proxies. We play against your skill, not your wallet.
      If someone claims to play cedh but is against proxies, that person is not a real cedh player.

      Here in Brazil we have a format called Commander 500. The maximum price limit for the decks is 500 reais (approximately 90 dollars) with the price based on the largest online store in the country. This helps a lot to level the game.

My friends were haters at first, but now they know that having around 40 interactive cards in the deck means that it's dangerous for them whether Mizzet is out yet or not. Does damage dealt from Niv’s ability, and other commanders who deal non-combat damage through abilities, count as commander damage? Or is commander damage just combat damage based?
