  • The Fathers of the Orthodox Church, during the Fourth Ecumenical Council of Chalcedon in 451 AD, divided the orthodox world in five age-old “city-Patriarchates”, that of Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem. During the second millennium, after the great Schism between East and West, the Patriarchate of Constantinople grants autocephalies in its territory, answering the growing request of people for ecclesiastical self-direction. The Tradition of the Church expects the fifteen Churches that constitute the Eastern Orthodox Church to have clear confines but also definite missionary order in their territorial bounds.
However, in the brink of the new year, we became witnesses of an ecclesiastical “offend”: the establishment of a Russian Exarchy in the territory of the Chalcedonian Patriarchate of Alexandria. This action of “intrusion” in the territory of another Church is, on one hand, against the two thousand-year old tradition of the Church’s Body, and on the other hand, reminding us of the “favourite” tactic of the crusaders of the 12th and 13th century. The Patriarchate of Russia, that drew its self-government from the Mother Church of Constantinople, virtually abolishes the Patriarchate of Alexandria, asserting to become an ecumenical Church, the Church of the “Third Rome”.
Facing this expansionism that abolishes any ecclesiastical canonicity, the Church promotes its Tradition, faith and belief that it is Body of Christ by preaching: “As the Prophets saw, as the Apostles taught, as the Church received, as the Teachers dogmatized, as the Ecumene has agreed upon, as the Grace has glared, as the truth has been proved, as the falsehood has been repelled, as the Wisdom has been preached, as the Christ has awarded…”
With the Reverend Metropolitan of Peristeri sir Grigorios (Papathomas)
