My current problem is not understanding how to keep my assets--like backing music, front and rear-end video logos, and logo/bug--easily accessible from one episode of our talk show to the next..... What I have been doing is copying the folder from each previous episode to the next, renaming it and replacing those files (like footage) in order to prep for the new episode. I KNOW there's probably an easier and a more efficient way to do this, so I am in search of that solution..... Thanks for confirming that I need to start a new library for each TYPE of video project (i.e. vlogs, music videos, and talk show episodes), as that is what I had figured out after just winging it for about a year....

I started editing a video, but I want to start another video now. I can't seem to name my timeline, and there's a bunch of different timelines depending on the time I was editing. I just want to start editing a different timeline for now, but feel like I need to finish and export before doing anything other timelines. Ugh

Great video! It still baffles me that Final Cut goes through all of this... and for what? Mac already has Finder why do we need a separate organization system with different functions and names. This is by far the most confusing thing about switching from Premier to Final Cut. I wish they would leave the organization up to us, and for the newbies, let them use iMovie. GRRRR!

First and foremost, health and peace to you. Now a compliment, then a question. Excellent explanation of your organizational strategy. Question, at the beginning (:47) you show a Finder window that indicates you are on your Macbook. At (1:17) when you start to create the folder structure in the Finder you say you edit off of an SSD, but the screen shows your MacBook highlighted in the Finder. Then you click on the _workspace folder. Is that folder, _workspace, a shortcut from the desktop or someplace else, like the SSD-HD? Any clarification is appreciated.

When I import I find it imports with a 4:3 aspect ratio. The files are all HD and don’t have this aspect ratio in the main folder on the desktop. What am I doing wrong? When I try change the project setting to ensure 1080p it doesn’t make any difference to the clips in the project.

  • @airindiana

I’m super confused. I’ve keep all my footage on my camera 1tb SSD and prefer to keep it all on there. So with all this library/event/project thing does FCPX save everything onto my computer? It seems you bring your footage onto your computer form your camera before creating libraries am I correct?
It’ll mean I’ll fill up my computer? When I create a new event I see it suggests saving it under “movies”. When I trialled Resolve it seems easy just to work straight off the SSD. How do I do that with FCPX? I found myself getting lost from the get go ha. I just don’t want footage replicated everywhere on my computer. Rather work off the SSD and manage that.

I only see the parts I used to create this 20 minute video. I need to add a voice over to one part of a video I created 2 days ago, but when I open FCPX I only see the current project. I'm not sure why this is so overly complicated. I feel like I waste a lot of creative time on situation like these. I cannot find my project! Argh
Okay, I'm back 5 minutes later. I found the project somewhere it didn't belong. I really need to understand how to organize and save videos I'm working on when I'm done or switch over to a new project. I'm not understanding how they are saving. I'm going to watch your video a few more times.

Going from Premiere to Final Cut this was so approachable, so useful, so life saving for a job I am starting tomorrow. Do you have other Final Cut focused videos that translate based on Premiere languag-ing? Other questions, if you don't mind... What are "Folders," used for in Final Cut? And do you have a video that goes over what "Smart Collections," are in Final Cut?

Pretty much my way - i would suggest you to add the date at the beginning of your deliverable folder in a format 201912-DeliverableName - this will allow you to sort projects quickly. I also create own library for each deliverable - the reason being is that FCPX converts my FS5 files to its own format and embed it into own library - if i would allow to add everything to one library this will be a killer for a space. My events are different however, usually they are duplicating library name but when i have project (i.e. a 3 day conference) where i have to deliver highlights from each day thats what i use for events [Deliverable XXX - Day 1] [Deliverable XXX - Day 2] [Deliverable XXX - Day 3] and i use projects within this event for [Rough Cut] [Edit1] etc. Hope it makes sense.
I have also switched from premiere to FCP 7 and then to FCPX - but now in my organisation i need to work in Premiere and must say - i prefer Premiere's Pro file organisation - ordinary folders work better for me - especially when you want to archive the project, but i found it much slower on mac comparing to the PC. Also i am missing easy ease feature within FCPX.
I wanted to ask how you finding this SSD T5 for video work - usually i was using raid drives but i have ordered new Macbook Pro 16 and now i want external SSD to replace my HDD's. Do you create mirror backups as you go? Thats my only concern with single drive SSD.
