What’s the “goal” of detailing: preservation, perfection or profits? | DIY Detail Podcast #92

  • It's a question you might not ask yourself very often, but it's worth exploring: why, exactly, do we detail? Is it in pursuit of perfection? Is the goal to preserve the original finish -- whether it be on the paint, or the interior? Or, is the goal ... profits? Lots of you turn detailing into a business, after all. That's what Nick and Yvan discuss in this episode. What say you?

I got into detailing for the same reasons you said. I bought a really nice car and I wanted to preserve it.
I had to get started pretty quick because my 6 year old nephew wanted to surprise his uncle one hot summer day with a car wash. His car wash was spraying the car down with a hose and letting the hard water bake off of the paint. Mind you, the car was literally out of the factory for a week.
I knew I needed to get rid of the water spots asap and I went to TH-cam. Found your channel, and some other great ones, and now I have the bug. I started detailing friends and family’s cars. It’s really enjoyable to me.

You just get the bug for it, especially if you have a bit of OCD for cleaning and a passion for cars🙌

I started detailing because I just love cars. I continue detailing because I found it to be fun. Now I'm about to embark on the adventure of doing it for profit. However overall it's definitely for preservation. I think of a car, new or aged, as a member of the family, and I want to care for it like I would a child or an elderly member. You wouldnt let your great-grandma or your 4 month old sit there nasty and dirty without bathing either one, so you shouldn't with your car as well. Detailing for me truly is a labor of love, whether its a car I just met, or one that I've cleaned 50 times.

It should be part of checking your levels and tyre pressure. Maintenance should be part of your weekly routine. A clean car is a happy car.

I like this approach. I was on the other side before, looking for a perfection. This week I polish my hood which had some swirls on it (very hard german paint so it took me some time) but also some deeper scratches from cats jumping on my car, tiny stone chips ... to remove it to perfection would mean removing a lot of clear coat which actually damage the best protection of the car so I just went after the swirls and live with the other defects that only I can see and only when the sun is in the right spot.

Great video guys. Perfection.. it's never going to end, you're not likely to get it, it won't be any "fun", and then what will you do with the car? Drive it? Where? Buy a brand new car and enter it into a Concurs event... how will it do? Such great advice and info. Of course taking care of your car isn't a waste of time. We, as humans aren't perfect in many ways.. So, should you not wake up in the morning, shower, brush teeth, shave, style hair, and put on clean clothes? Of course!! Same with a car.. keep it clean, in good shape and you'll enjoy the car and get max resale when it's time to part ways. As said in the video.. Balance..

Regarding right/wrong ways to detail...as an engineer I'm always fond of saying "there are many ways to get to 100." The methods used to get there depend on many different factors. What works best for you, may not for someone else.

Good honest dialogue. For DIY in real world, dilemma is often making scratches not so obvious. I find the glossy ceramic coating and topping to just make that more obvious.
